Recently retired Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth鈥檚 96-year-old husband and the grandfather of Prince William and Prince Harry (as well as the great-grandfather of little Prince George and Princess Charlotte), has been hospitalized, according to reports from Buckingham Palace and the royal family.

Prince Philip

鈥淭he Duke of Edinburgh was admitted to King Edward VII Hospital in London last night, as a precautionary measure, for treatment of an infection arising from a pre-existing condition,鈥 a spokesman for the family told People, adding that despite the health issue, the Prince is still in 鈥済ood spirits.鈥

Attending the Royal Ascot races with Queen Elizabeth on Tuesday, Prince Philip was expected to also make an appearance along with the Queen today at the State Opening of Parliament.

Not wanting to worry the public with his absence, the royals decided to release the news of the hospitalization to prevent rumors circulating that something worse might have happened (the same way possibilities of the Prince鈥檚 death buzzed when a late-night meeting was recently called simply to address the fact that he鈥檚 stepping back from public life).

While the royal family isn鈥檛 likely to release any further details about Prince Philip鈥檚 condition until he鈥檚 feeling better (or if he takes a sudden and unexpected turn for the worse), fans of the royals can surely still send well wishes to the Prince as he recovers.
