We Asked Couples Therapists To Learn More About Jonah Hill And The Weaponization Of Therapy-Speak

Is it just me or has the past week been a doozy in regards to romantic relationships? First Keke Palmer was mom shamed by her son's father, and now surfer Sarah Brady has something to say about her ex, Jonah Hill. After releasing screenshots of text conversations, she let the world know about his alleged controlling behavior. It feels like the celebrity breakup world is going through too many relatable problems, and the public isn't a fan. (It's me — I'm the public)

What caught my eye about this particular situation is his use of therapy-speak to justify bad behavior and unfounded demands. For context, "therapy speak" is categorized as the ideology used to describe certain psychological behavior. As someone who's dealt with an ex-boyfriend who basically wanted me to change my entire identity, there's nothing about this behavior that raises green flags— it actually points to toxic behavior, and that's no bueno.

Because therapy is such a beneficial tool, I've been curious about what could cause someone to weaponize therapy-speak in their day-to-day. To understand the whys and the hows of all this, I spoke with licensed Professional Counselor Candidate Angelica Jackson, MA, LPCC of Denver Coupes and & Sex Therapy along with Kristal DeSantis, M.A., LMFT, CCTP, CSTIP, a licensed marriage and family therapist.


What causes someone to use manipulative tactics in relationships?

Jackson said there are a few reasons why someone may use manipulation to get their way. "It often comes down to power and control. The person using these tactics might feel insecure or threatened, and they might use manipulation as a way to feel more secure or powerful." In the past, Jonah Hill has been vocal about having body insecurities, as evidenced in his Netflix documentary Stutz, so it doesn't feel like a reach to suggest this could've carried over into his relationship.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he said success didn't fix his anxiety or insecurities. "... the media kept being really brutal about my weight... It kept me from feeling any sense of being able to grow past negative feelings about myself.

Knowing this, Jackson also went on to say someone "might not know how to express their needs and desires in a healthy and respectful way." Jonah stated via text that he was setting boundaries with Sarah, asking her to limit surf clients to women only. This ask is extremely controlling, interfering with their livelihood and questioning their loyalty. We don't know the specifics of conversations outside the text threads, but I think if he met her as a surf instructor, he should've been more respectful of her chosen profession. (Or, you know, not date her)

How does manipulation look in relationships?

When we think about controlling behavior, we may ask ourselves what actually happens in manipulative relationships. According to Jackson, the answer is multifaceted. She said, "Manipulation in relationships is a complex and often harmful behavior that can lead to significant emotional distress and damage to the relationship." She also said it's important to know the different ways it can show up. In no particular order, Jackson explained the six main types of manipulation:

  • Gaslighting: "This is a form of psychological manipulation where one person causes another to question their own reality, memory, or perceptions."
  • Guilt-tripping: "This involves making someone feel guilty to get them to do something."
  • Silent treatment: "This is a form of emotional manipulation where one person ignores or refuses to communicate with the other to punish them or to exert control."
  • Victim-blaming: "This is when the manipulator blames the victim for their own actions or for things that are not their fault."
  • Love-bombing and devaluation: "... a cycle where the manipulator gives excessive attention and affection (love-bombing) and then becomes very critical and distant (devaluation).
  • Triangulation: "This is when the manipulator uses a third person to create tension, jealousy, or competition."

Why can therapy-speak be dangerous?

DeSantis loves that more people have access to therapy resources and the language associated with it. She said, "When individuals have access to therapeutic concepts and terminology, it can contribute to their self-awareness and improve their ability to communicate effectively." But she's also aware of the downside of this.

"Manipulators may exploit clinical language, such as boundaries, gaslighting, or narcissism, to further gaslight and control their partners. They twist and distort these terms, leading to confusion, self-doubt, and a distorted understanding of the situation," DeSantis said.

She hopes the situation with Jonah Hill and Sarah Brady reminds people to be careful about therapy-speak. She said, "As a therapist, I encourage individuals to call out and challenge those who improperly use therapeutic terminology to diagnose, control, or malign their partners. Merely using a term like 'boundaries' does not necessarily mean it is being used correctly."

AKA, just because we see people regularly using a buzzy therapy-speak word doesn't mean they're always using it in the right context. Be sure to communicate clearly with your partner about how you're feeling, keeping the conversation a dialogue rather than a list of demands.

Don't let this list scare you into never wanting to date again though. Relationships can be tricky to navigate, but there are healthy examples out there! What I've learned is that, deep down, we have an idea of when someone is causing us to feel a shell of our former selves. Although love is great, it's not the only thing you need to sustain a healthy relationship. Respect and true, healthy boundaries are also important. (Are you taking notes, Jonah?)

Blake Lively recently joined an episode of her Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants' costar Amber Tamblyn's Further Adoand revealed the one unbreakable rule she made with Ryan Reynolds.

“When Ryan and I got together, we made a rule not to work at the same time,” she says. “So that we could always prioritize our personal life...That takes working really hard when we're not. Just like financial planning and sustaining that; it takes balance.”

I love that Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds are serious about their family life, and that they have identified what works for them and are sticking with it.

Yes, Taylor Swift loves Blake Lively's kids! At the Philadelphia show of the Eras Tour, in which Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively attended, Taylor said hello from the stage.

One funny detail about Ryan Reynolds' kids that I love is when he mentioned the girls finally realized Taylor Swift was a popstar. "I think what's most exciting for them is that for the longest time they just thought Taylor's just like an aunt, like a friend of Mommy and Daddy that's very, very close, almost family," he tellsThe Jess Cagle Show. "And then they went to a concert one day and were like, 'Ohhhhh, this isn't a hobby.'"

For Super Bowl Sunday, Blake Lively joined Taylor Swift to support beau (and KC Chiefs tight end) Travis Kelce. "Last week I left my kids for the first time ever," she says on Instagram. "I took pictures upside down and had no clue. I treated a friendship bracelet like a Flat Stanley for my husband like I didn’t realize it wasn’t ‘07. I borrowed more jewelry than the skeleton in the Pirates of the Caribbean ride. And I went clubbing. Now I know what my episode of TheTwilight Zone would look like."

How has motherhood affected Blake Lively?

Blake Lively recently opened up about how Ryan Reynolds and she monitor screen safety for their kids, which is definitely something top-of-mind in 2024. “This is not an ad. I get nothing out of this. I just love @tappityapp,” she said of the STEM-focused educational app. “It’s engaging, informative, fun and they care about safety."

She also jokes that she's learning new things right along with her daughters! But, no matter how educational or fun an app is, Blake Lively also emphasizes the importance of engaging with her kids' devices: "I’m always triple checking any kids app constantly for safety because that’s my responsibly not an app’s, but I do LOVE this one.”

Despite its fun and funny moments, the actress has admitted being a mom is hard, but she did it with her signature dry sense of humor. “BettyBooze at your service," she wrote in an Instagram Story announcing the new brand. "These are recipes I’ve been making for loved ones for years. But I have 4 kids now. And I’m tired. So here they are. In a can."

However, Lively absolutely loves motherhood, and says in a 2022 interview with Forbes that having children has made her feel more comfortable in her own skin. "Once I had children, that just became even more profound because my time was even more precious, but also I think having children for me made me feel so much more in my skin," she says. "I never felt more myself or at ease in my own body or more confident — not to say that there aren't a bevy of insecurities coming at me a million times a day, but I just feel incredibly settled."

Speaking with People in 2021, Lively also explains how important it is that her children see her accomplish things outside the home. "I want to be as present of a mother as humanly possible and I want them to feel my presence, but I also think the best way to be the best mother is to show them that you can have a life and have a passion and have an identity outside of just being a mother," Lively says.

While she acknowledges that motherhood is all-encompassing, and it looks different for everyone, she knows that having your own identity is very important. "Teaching them that they can maintain themselves and that everything is possible [is crucial]," she adds.

She gave birth to James in 2014, while Inez was born in 2016. Lively gave birth to Betty in 2019 and their fourth baby in February of 2023. I'm hoping that we might find out Ryan Reynolds' new baby's name in honor of her first birthday!

The couple decided to name their daughter James after Reynolds' late father. While the name connects both James and Reynolds to his father, it also gives Lively the chance to bond with her daughter over having historically male names. "I liked having a boy's name," Lively said on Good Morning Americain 2015. "I thought I'd pass it on."

Their third daughter Betty's name is a tribute to Lively's late father. We didn't know the name of the couple's third baby until Taylor Swift used all three names in her 2020 album folklore. Swift also used James' voice at the beginning of her 2017 track "Gorgeous"! Does that mean we'll hear one of Ryan Reynolds' children in Reputation (Taylor's Version)? I hope so!

Per People, Ryan Reynolds has made it clear he and Blake are wholly invested in the kids' daily lives. The doting husband and father enjoys the moments of "walking them to school and walking them back" as it deepens their bond. More than anything, Ryan and Blake's main goal is to make sure they teach their kids how to be introspective with Ryan saying, "...that's the thing we sort of hang our hat on the most is self-awareness with our kids."

However, that doesn't mean Blake and Ryan don't absolutely love being parents. "We're very excited [and] we wouldn't do this four times if we didn't love it," he says in an interview with CNBC's Power Lunch. "Everybody's doing great. Everybody's actually doing fantastic. I think if we hadn't figured it out by now, I think we'd be in deep, deep trouble."

"It's a zoo over here," he jokes. "This is my office here, this is where I'll probably — to be honest, I'll probably spend the rest of my life in here."

We love how much energy Ryan and Blake are pouring into their kids. It's always beautiful when parents are able to be present with their kids and teach them how to be present with themselves. Ryan Reynolds has also mentioned how having daughters "has been such a ride." Since he comes from a family of all boys, having daughters is something that was beyond his wildest dreams! “I love being a girl dad,” Ryan tells Access. “I have three daughters, which I never in a million years would imagine.”

He mentioned his newest daughter in June of 2023, when he announced his new series Bedtime Stories. "The idea for a show made to help everyone fall asleep was born the same day as my fourth child," he says on Instagram.

Yes, a Legally Blonde TV show is coming to Prime Video! The official logline of the show promises it "follows Elle Woods in high school as we learn about the life experiences that shaped her into the iconic young woman we came to know and love in the first ‘Legally Blonde’ film."

Deadline sources say Reese Witherspoon's Hello Sunshine will be behind the series based on the beloved film franchise. Nobody knows Legally Blonde as well as Reese, so if she has any kind of creative input, I know it's going to be worth watching!

There's no word on the cast yet, but considering the series is a prequel, we probably won't see Reese Witherspoon back as Elle. However, I'd love for her to make a cameo! (This could also be the perfect opportunity for Reese Witherspoon's daughter Ava Phillippe to make her acting debut!) Either way, it looks like Reese will still be involved in the production of the show.

“I truly couldn’t be more excited about this series! Fans will get to know how Elle Woods navigated her world as a teenager with her distinct personality and ingenuity, in ways that only our beloved Elle could do. What could be better than that?!” Reese says in a statement to Variety. “Legally Blonde is back!”

First up, the Vanilla Frosted Donut Signature Latte. This one is so sweet. But so addicting! It may not be the prime choice for those who don’t like sweet drinks, though. I *do* like my coffees fairly sweet, so I didn’t think it was overwhelming when I tried it.

More than anything, this latte simply delivered joy once I got it in my hands. It’s topped with a good amount of whipped cream and a healthy dose of rainbow sprinkles, which fix just about any bad day as far as I’m concerned.

Blueberry Donut Coffee

I go wild for blueberry cake donuts, and I expected the new Blueberry Donut Coffee to taste just like one. I was a bit disappointed when it didn't! I got more of a donut flavor rather than a blueberry one when I sipped down the iced version of this bev.

All things considered, I still loved my first impression of the new Blueberry Donut Coffee. I got it iced (duh), and with cream, it came out to the perfect, most beautiful coffee color. It had maybe 75% of the Vanilla Frosted Donut Signature Latte’s sweetness, which meant it was still sweet enough for my liking.

This could be a great go-to order when you don’t quite want espresso, but are still looking for a nice caffeinated sipper.

Kiwi Watermelon Refresher

The first thing I wrote down in my tasting notes about the brand-new Kiwi Watermelon Refresher was: “MMMMMM SO GOOD.” And I stand by that!

Upon first sip, I got a refreshing (ha, get it?) swig of kiwi flavor and watermelon flavor, which was very nice and evenly balanced. I could see myself gulping this one down at the park or on a road trip this summer! It honestly tasted like candy, which I am not mad about a single bit.

That being said, most of the Dunkin’ Refreshers are really sweet, so if you like milder drinks, you may not fully like this newcomer.

I also got to try the Kiwi Watermelon Refresher with lemonade – a new thing for Dunkin’. I really loved it! With the lemonade, I still got the full effect from the kiwi and watermelon. It was never overpowered, unlike other fruity lemonade beverages from similar coffee chains.

Watermelon Burst Donut

I was really hesitant to try this new menu item because I normally don’t associate watermelon with donuts. One thing about the new Watermelon Burst Donut is that she’s messy… This sweet treat is coated in tons of pink, watermelon-flavored sprinkles and filled to the brim with watermelon jelly.

The first bite I took was just of the donut dough itself – and it wasn’t half bad! My only complaint at that point was the fact that the pink sprinkles got all over the place. They made my lips and mouth messy, and fell off into my lap and around my car. Yikes!

The second bite, of course, included some of the watermelon jelly. This is when I decided that the Watermelon Burst Donut just isn't for me. The bready part was good, but the jelly was super sour – just not what I'd prefer from a donut as a chocolate girlie. I wouldn’t order it on my own accord.

Chocolate Chunk Cookie

Chocolate chunk cookies are classic – you can’t deny that! You also can’t mess it up, IMO. Dunkin’ hit the nail right on the head with this new packaged snack. First of all, I adore the size of the Chocolate Chunk Cookie. It’s huge and packed with big chocolate chunks – as it should be!

There’s a nice variety with texture in this cookie, too. I found that the chocolate chunks were creamy and sweet, while the rest of the cookie was crunchy and downright cookie-like. It made eating it fun!

The pre-packaged-ness of it all is also super nice for snacking on-the-go, or even saving for later (midnight snack, anyone?).

Green Goddess Wrap

Seemingly a direct competitor for Starbucks’ popular Spinach Feta Wrap, the new Green Goddess Wrap from Dunkin’ thoroughly impressed me. Unlike its counterpart, the Green Goddess Wrap is delivered with a very nice texture. I find that other options typically get soggy (after being warmed and put in a bag) and fall apart, but this one didn’t get that way at all.

I loved that the outside of the wrap got a little bit crispy, while the inside stayed gooey and warm. While the texture is quite enjoyable, I was left wishing for more flavor from the wrap’s contents.

Even if it was lacking a bit in flavor, you could easily doctor it up with spices, salt, or hot sauce. More than anything, I appreciate that the Green Goddess Wrap provides a substantial option for breakfast, brunch, or lunch via drive-thru.

Thanks to Sean Kaufman and Rain Spencer (as well as all the pros behind the camera), the best TV scene of 2023 came out this summer when The Summer I Turned Prettygave us Steven and Taylor (played by Sean and Rain, respectively) dancing to Frank Ocean's cover of "Moon River." I absolutely lost my mind! This series is one of the best teen dramas around, and good news for fans of all things Cousins Beach: we're getting The Summer I Turned Pretty season 3! When will The Summer I Turned Pretty season 3 come out?

We were hoping to see The Summer I Turned Pretty season 3 return in 2024, but thanks to a new post from the official TSITP account, we know the show will drop summer 2025. Okay, TBH that's a total bummer (just because we can't wait to watch!!), but, as the books say, It's Not Summer Without You (er, Belly and her friends).

Lola Tung starred as Euridyce in Hadestown on Broadway until March 17, 2024. During the official press day — which you can watch on TikTok — she told me that while she doesn't know too much about Belly's arc this season, she's just as excited to return to Cousins Beach as we are! "I'm just very excited to be back with everyone and to be able to step back into Belly's shoes, I'm super excited," she says.

Considering the third book, We'll Always Have Summer, revolves around Belly, Conrad, and Jeremiah, we're expecting The Summer I Turned Pretty cast to include Lola Tung, Christopher Briney, and Gavin Casalegno. We're also hoping to see Sean Kaufman, Rain Spencer, Jackie Chung, and Rachel Blanchard again!

Who does Conrad end up with in The Summer I Turned Pretty series?

While we don't know who Conrad will end up with in The Summer I Turned Pretty season 3, there is one theory that suggests his reunion with Belly will be better than ever. Lola Tung, Rain Spencer, Gavin Casalegno, and other cast members have been spotted around Wilmington — all except Chris Briney.@julevere wonders if they're filming in chronological order for one specific reason.

"You don't see Conrad for ages in book 3," she says. "What if Jenny [Han] is doing that on purpose so the actual moment in the show where Conrad and Belly see each other for the first time, [in a way] that's going to be the first legitimate time those two actors as...Belly and Conrad will see each other."

Waiting as long as possible for Lola Tung and Chris Briney to see each other means that Belly and Conrad's reunion will be more intense, and bring up all the old emotions (and infinity necklaces) that came up during season 2. If there's one thing this show has taught me, it's that you can only run from your feelings for so long and as a member of #TeamConrad, I'm hoping any reunion between the two brings them together for potential future seasons.

Even though The Summer I Turned Pretty is set on the coast of Massachusetts, the show is filming in Wilmington, North Carolina. This city is actually pretty well known in Hollywood — projects like Iron Man 3,One Tree Hill, and Outer Banks have filmed there! As someone who grew up going to Wilmington every single summer, I can promise you it's just as pretty as it looks (and the fair from season 2 is just as fun!!)

There is not a fourth The Summer I Turned Pretty book, but that doesn't mean the show has to end with season 3. They've already changed a few details from the books — namely, adding the Stephen/Taylor relationship reminds me of how Gossip Girl gave us Chuck and Blair, a fan-favorite ship that wasn't in those books either! I'm excited to see how the story (and the characters) continue to grow and evolve!

Prime Video announced the renewal on August 3, right before episode five of the second season hit the streaming service. Just like the season two trailer, Taylor Swift's "august" plays in the background and I'm in tears.

“We’ve been delighted to see the passion with which fans have embraced The Summer I Turned Pretty,” Amazon and MGM Studios' head of television Vernon Sanders says in a press release. “Jenny Han is a gifted storyteller, whose fans have been clamoring for the third chapter of this story. We’re excited today to share the news that they have a lot more Summer to look forward to."
