#MeToo Shows Why Electing More Women to Office Is More Than Symbolic

It’s no secret that women across the US have been running for political office in record-breaking numbers following the 2016 election. At least 575 women announced their intent to run in House, Senate, and gubernatorial races as of March, marking a 60 percent increase in female candidates for Congress since 2016. In the wake of the #MeToo movement, these numbers are more than just symbolic: They signal a real hope for change through female leadership.

#MeToo is more than a viral hashtag — it’s a movement to produce accountability by not only holding men responsible but also boosting female leadership. Now, with primaries fully underway across the country, it’s become clear that women running for office are doing more than making a statement: Their big wins in often crowded fields are a reminder that women are running to win.

Women — and in particular, Democratic women — won about half of the elections in key state primaries in California, New Mexico, Illinois, New Jersey, and a special election in Missouri, which saw a formerly pro-Trump district go blue and elect a woman. In all states but California, a woman won the party nomination for governor.

The Virginia primaries saw similar gains for female candidates, with congressional primary victories among Democrats Elaine Luria, Abigail Spanberger, and Jennifer Wexton, who will each square off against Republican incumbents this fall. In Nevada, Democrats nominated Rep. Jacky Rosen for Senate, Susie Lee for Congress, and Kate Marshall for Lt. Governor.

In a nation where some 80 percent of Congress and 75 percent of all state legislators are male, and with a president accused of sexual misconduct by handfuls of women, it doesn’t hurt to remind girls and young women that politics isn’t supposed to be a boys’ club. But these gains in female candidacy might have another sweeping benefit, too: Political science research has shown that women often legislate differently from their male counterparts — for the better.

Put simply, female legislators are often more efficient. A 2011 study of Congress revealed that the average female legislator had 2.31 of her bills enacted, compared to 1.57 from the average male legislator. (Vox says that, in one recent session of Congress, women passed twice as many bills as their male counterparts.)

And maybe unsurprisingly, there’s often a substantial difference in the issues male and female legislators prioritize, with women more likely to take charge on key issues that disproportionately affect the living standards of women, people of color, and other marginalized groups. Even between liberal male and female lawmakers, a Georgetown political scientist found that women were still likelier than their male counterparts to prioritize issues like violence against women, family leave policy, and women’s health, co-sponsoring double the number of bills sponsored by liberal men that related to women’s health.

According to a study from 2016 that looked at 151,824 bills introduced in the House from 1973 to 2014, women were more likely than men to sponsor bills in critical domestic policy areas such as civil rights, health, and education. Another report revealed that white men in state congressional legislatures were key leaders in proposing restrictions on abortion. And while plenty of anti-choice women like Iowa governor Kim Reynolds have been not just privy but often instrumental to advancing some of these restrictions, their stances don’t magically negate the objectively harmful effects or oppressive nature of abortion bans on women.

And of course, as the #MeToo movement has revealed, women’s chosen areas of focus in policy aren’t the only assets they bring to the table. In revealing the extent to which systemic sexual exploitation and abuse has been the result of male complicity and dominance in spaces of decision-making power, the movement shows us how important it often is just to have a woman in the room. Sexual harassment scandals ravaged Capitol Hill last year, from a Republican Congress member’s offering millions to aides to have his children, to multiple groping allegations against Democratic Sen. Al Franken, to Republican support of Roy Moore, an Alabama Senate candidate accused of sexually abusing minors years ago.

Greater representation of women in political office is necessary for facilitating safer, more respectful spaces. And if the jarring scandals of the past year aren’t evidence enough, consider how female senators unanimously signed a letter imploring bipartisan, male Senate leadership to allow Senate sexual harassment policy reform to move forward earlier this year.

Months later, their demands have yet to be met. And while #MeToo has encouraged more male allies, sexual harassment is clearly one of many deeply important issues that have been relegated to “women’s issue” (AKA, lower priority) status. According to the leaders and founders of the American Women’s Party, an organization that aims to empower Democratic female candidates and voters, even with more liberal men in the room, issues that affect women most often remain afterthoughts, at best.

From the treatment of abortion in the Affordable Care Act to progressive prioritization of tuition-free public college as a talking point over universal childcare, even well-meaning, progressive spaces can often treat the female experience as tangential — and that’s if they remember to consider it at all.

Women’s and all social issues are never, at their core, just social issues; they also bear deep, weighty economic implications. And more politicians would understand this if more of them were women. When we discuss the gender wage gap, rather than blame girls and young women for opting into lesser-paid fields, perhaps we should question the cultural forces — cultural forces all women know too well — that steer them away from and produce gender gaps in leadership and lucrative fields. Perhaps we should question the devaluation of feminized fields, which is a product of the belief that anything women can do must, therefore, be easy — a belief all women fight back against on a daily basis.

It’s time for us to reevaluate all of it, from recognizing the necessity of paid family leave in order to give more women options, to the necessity of birth control as a resource for women’s economic enfranchisement. And it all goes back to electing people with direct experiences with these issues, who will be likelier to make policy decisions that address everyday women’s often forgotten needs.

Representation of women isn’t just symbolic: As political science research — and the current #MeToo landscape — reveals, it has real implications for government efficiency and affects whether key women’s issues, and women as people, receive respect.

Kim Kardashian as 'Siobhan' in "American Horror Story: Delicate"

As good as Kim Kardashian is as the icy publicist Siobhan on AHS: Delicate, don't expect her to watch herself onscreen. She appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live yesterday and explained why she hasn't seen herself in clips of the show when Jimmy Kimmel played and unsettling one.

Her character can be seen intimidating a fertility doctor to do her bidding as she pierces the top of his neck with a long orange fingernail. She smiled before saying "It's so funny, I can't watch it back," and then added, "I get so nervous."

She even talked about the difference between filming for TV and working as an actual actress. She said, "I called my sisters and I go, 'Guys. You — not to say you'd ever want to get into acting — but you are so lucky you can wake up and just, we can sit in bed and film, and you don't have to get up...like there is no schedule."

However, it seems like the budding actress took her new schedule in stride because Star Trek actor and AHS co-star Zachary Quinto applauded Kardashian’s acting chops.

“I did a cameo on this season of ‘American Horror Story’ and I got to meet her,” the actor told People. “She was so lovely and warm and, really, I don’t think she needs my advice.” Quinto added, sharing that Kardashian, was “really in her element” on set and he was “really impressed by her spirit and her openness…I really look forward to seeing this season because I think she’s gonna do a wonderful job.”

Recap of AHS: Delicate Part 1

The first part of AHS: Delicate premiered on FX September 20, 2023 and centered around actress Anna Victoria Alcott's desire to become a mother. Played by Emma Roberts, viewers watched as her husband Dexter Harding (played by Matt Czuchry) was supportive of her IVF procedure so the couple could conceive their first child. Despite the previous struggles, the procedure is a success and the happy couple learn they have a baby on the way.

However, things go horribly wrong when Anna starts being followed and eventually experiences a violent miscarriage during her first trimester. Somehow the baby actually survives, but Anna still experiences a series of strange hallucinations and events. From losing her hair to vomiting a foreign object, she starts to wonder if something is wrong with her baby. There's also the fact that she told her publicist Siobhan (played by Kim Kardashian) that she'd do anything to remain at the top of the her career.

What's revealed is that a baby cult does exist and Dexter's dead first wife knew all about it. However, the cult still looks at him as a threat so it's only a matter of time before they close in.

We suspected Siobhan may have a darker role than Anna thinks and the trailer confirms it. As Anna gets further along in her pregnancy, it's hinted that her growing baby may not be 'normal' and there's nothing she'll be able to do about it.

We're crossing our fingers for Anna and Dexter, but the baby cult may have the final say in AHS: Delicate Part 2.

The first portion of AHS: Delicate Part 2 premiered on FX April 3, 2024, but the series will come to a close beginning April 24. All we can say is things are about to get extremely bumpy 👀.

The "Bridgerton" World Tour Is Bringing Regency England To A City Near You

If you’ve ever dreamt of entering the world of Bridgerton, in all its floral, pastel glory, then this is your lucky day! The Bridgerton world tour allows the stars of the hit show to introduce fans to the new season in a whole new way. "Beyond the drawing rooms and ballrooms of Mayfair, London’s most fashionable set is going international," says the official Instagram announcement. "Watch along as esteemed members of the Ton see what worldly affairs the globe has to offer."

The first part of Bridgerton season 3 hits Netflix May 16 (followed by part 2 on June 13) and before we press play, Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton are taking the Ton on a whirlwind trip around the world. Here are all 10 cities they're visiting:

Nicola Coghlan has already wowed us with some glittering looks for the press tour (that’s MY diamond of the season!!) and I would love to see a whole new look every stop. Fingers crossed it’s different shades of seafoam or teal like her costumes in all the new images this season — or even more metallic shades of silver and gold because Penelope Featherington truly shines this season like we've never seen.

Just like The Queen's Ball: A Bridgerton Experience allowed fans to become a part of a regency ball, I would LOVE for this Bridgerton world tour to be another immersive experience. That way, we can all delve even further into the regency of it all. But even more than that, I want to see Bridgerton’s version of each city. Because we’ve seen Shonda Rhimes’ take on England, but I would LOVE to see what her version of 1800s Amsterdam looks like, or her approach to Verona. Now THAT's a Romeo + Juliet I'd watch!

Blake Lively Just Did A Simple Favor For Gleeks Everywhere

When anyone asks me for my favorite movie-viewing experiences, A Simple Favor (starring Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick) always makes the list. When I first watched the movie, I knew next to nothing about the plot, and it made the viewing experience ten times better, especially since I had a watch party with a bunch of friends who *also* had no expectations. I know A Simple Favor 2 is going to be just as sexy, unexpected, and gripping as the original. What is A Simple Favor 2 about?

A Simple Favor 2 will see the "return of Stephanie Smothers (Kendrick) and Emily Nelson (Lively) as they head to the beautiful island of Capri, Italy, for Emily’s extravagant wedding to a rich Italian businessman," according to the movie's synopsis (via People). "Along with the glamorous guests, expect murder and betrayal to RSVP for a wedding with more twists and turns than the road from the Marina Grande to the Capri town square."

The first leaked images show the aforementioned extravagant wedding, with Blake Lively's Emily in a wedding dress and Anna Kendrick's Stephanie standing by her side in a gorgeous floral midi dress. While the first A Simple Favor ended with Emily in prison, I have no doubt whatsoever that we'll see her make a grand escape to coastal Italy. The only thing chicer than martinis and crime at home is martinis and crime while basking in the Italian sun.

Is there A Simple Favor 2 movie?

Yes, Deadline confirmed in May of 2022 that we're getting A Simple Favor 2! The sequel film will be produced by Lionsgate and Amazon Studios, and reportedly, Paul Feig will direct again, while Jessica Sharzer will write the screenplay. I still talk about the script for A Simple Favor, so if Jessica is returning, I will be seated!

When is the A Simple Favor 2 release date?

I'm expecting A Simple Favor 2 to hit our screens in 2025. Filming was originally scheduled for the fall of 2023, but after the Hollywood strikes delayed a variety of projects, production on the film was pushed to 2024. A Simple Favor 2 will reportedly begin filming in April of 2024.

Who's in the A Simple Favor 2 cast?

We can expect to see Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick return for this sequel. Henry Golding, Andrew Rannells, Bashir Salahuddin, Joshua Satine, Ian Ho, and Kelly McCormack are also set to star in A Simple Favor 2. Glee fans will also love knowing that Alex Newell is joining the cast along with Allison Janey! We can't wait to see the characters they'll be playing!

How does A Simple Favor end in the book?

The A Simple Favor book ending is *wildly* different than the movie ending! Instead of Stephanie turning on Emily and joining Sean, and then Emily getting run over by a car and put in prison for the murder of her father and sister (plus, you know, all the other illegal activity), Stephanie actually takes Emily's side.

In the book, Sean stays in a hotel while Emily gets custody of Nicky. The novel ends with the police finding Emily's ring inside the car of her main victim (a move that was probably orchestrated by Stephanie since Sean gave her the ring), and Emily deciding to pack up her life and leave.

In July 2017, a source seemingly confirmed what many fans had been wondering for months: that Tom Holland and Zendaya had been dating. Considering the two other sets of Spider-Man leads (Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst and Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield) both dated, it felt like this was one relationship that was bound to happen.

"They started seeing each other while they were filming Spider-Man," the insider tells People. "They've been super careful to keep it private and out of the public eye but they've gone on vacations with each other and try and spend as much time as possible with one another."

"They're both really ambitious and they challenge each other — but, most importantly, they make each other crack up," says another insider. "They seem to have a really similar sense of humor and love joking around together."

Tom Holland and Zendaya actually took to Twitter (now X) to tackle the rumors. "Wait wait...my favorite is when it says we go on vacations together HA! I haven't been on a vacation in years!" Zendaya says, to which Tomreplies, "Does the press tour count[?]"

In an interview with GQ, Tom Holland opened up about his relationship with Zendaya and how their relationship to fame has impacted everything. "One of the downsides of our fame is that privacy isn’t really in our control anymore, and a moment that you think is between two people that love each other very much is now a moment that is shared with the entire world,” he says of their July 2 kiss. “I’ve always been really adamant to keep my private life private, because I share so much of my life with the world anyway...We sort of felt robbed of our privacy.”

Ahead of Zendaya's spring movie Challengers (in which she plays a tennis pro-turned-coach opposite Mike Faist and Josh O'Connor), she watched the BNP Paribas Open Men's Final at Indian Wells Tennis Garden. Alongside Tom Holland and her assistant Darnell Appling, who she frequently calls her brother, Zendaya got comfy in a cream-colored tennis skirt, tank top, and zip-up hoodie ensemble. Spring really is here!! My favorite part of the afternoon is when Tom Holland and Zendaya sang along with Whitney Houston's "I Wanna Dance With Somebody."

April 9, 2024 — Zendaya Raves About Tom Holland

In her Vogue cover story for May 2024, Zendaya talks a lot about how fame has affected both her life and Tom Holland's. “His [career] changed overnight. One day you’re a kid and you’re at the pub with your friends, and then the next day you’re Spider-Man,” she says. “I definitely watched his life kind of change in front of him. But he handled it really beautifully.”

That star power was evident in 2022, when Tom Holland and Zendaya spent the afternoon at the Louvre in Paris...and almost broke the internet. “You just kind of get used to the fact that, 'Oh, I’m also one of these art pieces you’re going to take a picture of. I just gotta be totally cool with it and just live my life,'" Zendaya continues. (She also says that when the museum let them walk around after-hours, "it was like Night at the Museum.”)

This spring, Zendaya can't wait to see Tom Holland in his London production of Romeo & Juliet: "[I] could not be more proud. I’m going to try to see as many shows as I possibly can.”

April 10, 2024 — Challengers Premieres In London

Tom Holland showed up for the London premiere of Challengers, and got to support Zendaya in the sweetest way. In this video captured at the premiere, you can see Tom and Z share a hug and a kiss on the cheek during the evening. Even the smallest gesture can mean a lot during a busy night, and I love how in sync Tom Holland and Zendaya are!

The latest viral clip about Tom Holland and Zendaya also has to do with Challengers. During another Challengers press tour stop, Zendaya's overjoyed to be presented with a bouquet of gardenias. “These are my favorite flowers!” she exclaims. When asked if Tom Holland buys her flowers, she points at the camera and jokes, “I hope he's watching!”

While not every girlfriend necessarily wants a bouquet, every couple definitely has to figure out each other's love languages so they can get to know each other better — and apparently A-listers are the exact same!
