It’s no secret that divorce rates are skyrocketing in today’s day and age, with spouses finding themselves unable to revive the love and commitment they once shared. Some of my favorite movies/shows deal with the trials and tribulations that come with divorce, such as Scarlett Johansson's Marriage Story (2019) and Ted Lasso (2020). These tales of woe are all about overcoming heartache after breaking ties with the person you thought you would spend the rest of your life with.
With the rise of married couples severing ties, and taking into consideration all the heartache & drama that comes along with marital splits, it’s actually quite surprising to me that there aren’t more TV shows or films that explore this experience.
Drawn to this particular theme, I was thrilled by the announcement of HBO’s upcoming series, War, starring Dominic West (The Crown) and Sienna Miller (American Sniper). The series will explore the looming divorce between a tech mogul and his former wife, who happens to be one of the most famous movie stars in the world. Sounds like the perfect fodder for headline news on all the gossip magazines, right? The whole world is leaning in to watch their messy split unfold, with a series of betrayals and pitfalls along the way. According to the show’s synopsis, “Each side is sure they’ll win, but as the case spirals and loyalties fracture, reputations are on the line, and everyone’s playing to win.” It's reminding me a lot of Nicole Kidman's The Undoing.
