Lovers of the Arts Are Extremely Concerned About Trump’s Budget Plan

In times of civil and political unrest, the arts are one industry that tends to thrive. The counterculture movement of the ’60s gave us Woodstock. Nearly all of Banksy’s most iconic Bush-era installations are steeped with a political message. But in Trump’s America, financial allowance for creative endeavors is simply not in the government’s budget. The proposed 2018 federal budget plan Trump announced this morning could leave artists, writers, musicians, and scholars without the funding they need to contribute to our culture.

In Trump’s newly released budget plan, he proposes not just cuts but the elimination of three organizations crucial to American arts: the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Corporations for Public Broadcasting. In case you’re not super familiar with exactly what each of these agencies do, here’s a quick cheat sheet:

THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS

Maybe you’ve noticed #SavetheNEA trending on Twitter. The NEA is the largest grantmaker to arts organizations in the country and the only funder — public or private — that provides equal access to the arts in all 50 states. Because it is a federal agency, promoting American art and culture is the agency’s core mission. Currently, it offers multiple grants, two of which specifically work to incorporate art into the “livability of communities” and “underserved populations.” 40 percent of this agency’s funding goes to the state arts agencies and regional arts organizations.

In 2016, the NEA helped fund everything from a music mentorship program for Baltimore students to a film festival in Phoenix to a project furthering ways deaf and blind people can participate in theater. For a full list of projects that would not have been possible without the help of the NEA, check out this powerful website artist Tega Brain has created.

THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE HUMANITIES

The NEH has a similar mission to the NEA with more of an emphasis on philosophy, humanity, and conveying and preserving lessons in American history. NEH awards grants that typically go to cultural institutions, like museums, archives, libraries, colleges, and universities.

Last year, the agency gave out $21.1 million in grants for 248 humanities projects. Over the course of its lifetime, 16 books commissioned by this federal agency went on to win a Pulitzer Prize. It also funded The United States Newspaper Project, which cataloged and microfilmed 63.3 million pages of historic American newspapers. For a full list of projects funded by the NEH, head here.

CORPORATION FOR PUBLIC BROADCASTING

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB for short) is an important source of revenue for PBS and NPR. More than 1,041 local public radio stations and at least 365 local public television stations currently receive support from CPB. Its main goal is to help shield stations from political influence and to deliver federal support in a way that still allows stations to operate independently.

Podcasts like This American Life, The Moth, StoryCorps, Fresh Air, and Serial are all funded through public broadcasting. Meanwhile, PBS just unveiled the first feature documentary about Maya Angelou — part of a yearlong campaign the PBS is hosting titled #InspiringWomanPBS.

WHAT ELSE IS ON THE CHOPPING BLOCK?

Also on the chopping block according to Trump’s budget: 3,200 staff positions from the Environmental Protection Agency, advancement on climate change initiatives at the UN, $4.2 billion in community services programs, funding for before, after-school, and summer programs, the access to the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (reserved for college students with the greatest need for financial aid), and programs supporting the research of clean energy technology.

SO THEN WHERE IS THE MONEY GOING?

To start, a $2.6 billion increase is proposed for Homeland Security. Some of this would go toward hiring and training 500 Border Patrol agents and 1,000 Immigration and Customs Enforcement personnel. Some of this would also go toward the cost of creating a wall on the Mexican border. Yes, that’s the same wall President Trump promised Mexico would pay for, not the American people.

The biggest increase in spending (a $52 billion increase to be exact) will go toward military and defense initiatives. Exactly how this generous amount would be disbursed is not entirely clear. The New York Times reports that some of it would go toward fighting ISIS, more warships, and fighter jets.

IS THIS A DONE DEAL?

No. Technically, Congress creates the federal budget. The White House’s budget plans are really more of a formal document laying out where the administration’s priorities lie. The Senate and the House draft their versions of the plan. Those are then sent to appropriations committees. Then a conference committee meets to resolve the difference between the two proposed budgets and draft a final plan. Only then does it go back to the president, where he signs it into law.

Not surprisingly, Trump’s plan is not getting much support from Democratic members of Congress. In a statement about the budget, Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi writes, “President Trump is not making anyone more secure with a budget that hollows out our economy and endangers working families. Throwing billions at defense while ransacking America’s investments in jobs, education, clean energy and life-saving medical research will leave our nation weakened.”

California Congresswoman Kamila Harris tweeted, “President Trump’s proposed #budget attacks seniors, workers, science, and the poor. It’s disgusting and will have harmful repercussions.”

Democrats in Congress have been reliably quick to protest Trump’s policies. This sort of reaction is to be expected. But remember, Republicans are currently the majority in Congress. And so far they haven’t voted against any of the Trump controversial actions and nominations that require confirmation from Congress. It’s the Republican members of Congress who will need to stand against Trump’s budget plans to avoid devastating our nation’s arts, science, environmental protection, and foreign aid.

Emily Henry is one of BookTok's most beloved and hyped-up authors — and for good reason! Her books are captivating from beginning to end, and they're totally perfect for getting you out of that reading slump. While she's most known for her relatable romcom books, Emily Henry books are actually pretty genre-diverse, so there's a book in her lineup that is great for every type of reader. If you've been eyeing some of her work and want the run-down on what's what, here's exactly what you should know about each one of Emily Henry's books.

Funny Story (2024)

Funny Storyis one of our most-anticipated new books this year, set to be the latest addition to the ever-iconic Emily Henry books lineup! It's set to follow a woman named Daphne whose fiancé ends up realizing that he's in love with his childhood best friend, Petra.

Daphne decides to become roommates with Petra's ex-boyfriend, Miles Nowak, who fully understands and relates to her pain. The two are complete opposites and avoid each other as much as possible, until one day, they form a friendship and plan to generate some jealousy in the people who hurt them the most.

Happy Place (2023)

Happy Place is one of Emily Henry's most popular novels and has gone absolutely viral on BookTok. The story is about ex-fiancés Harriet and Wyn, who decide to keep their recent break-up a secret from their friends. They reluctantly agree to pretend to still be together during their cherished annual group trip to what they deem their "happy place" in Maine. During the trip, secrets threaten to come out, and Harriet and Wyn are forced to confront their lingering feelings and decide if their relationship can be salvaged after all.

Book Lovers (2022)

If you're a fan of the enemies-to-lovers book trope, you're going to love Book Lovers! The book is centered around a cynical literary agent named Nora Stephens who travels to a charming small town with her sister in order to escape for the summer. While there, she finds herself unexpectedly reunited with a grumpy editor who she had clashed with in the past.

Though the two had friction previously, their repeated encounters end up leading to a surprising connection that forces them to reevaluate their preconceived notions about what love and happiness truly are all about.

People We Meet On Vacation (2021)

People We Meet on Vacation is another one of Emily Henry's most beloved novels about best friends, Poppy and Alex, who are complete opposites. The two embarked on summer vacations annually for a decade until a mysterious argument left them on non-speaking terms. When Poppy finds herself in a slump, she persuades Alex to go on more trips in hopes of fixing their friendship and finding out what went wrong in the first place.

The book utilizes flashbacks to revisit past vacations — allowing readers an inside look into the inner workings of a complicated, yet relatable, friendship dynamic.

Beach Read (2020)

Aptly titled Beach Read, this book is the perfect book to pack for you next vacation. This opposites attract love story follows two writers — romance writer January Andrews and literary fiction writer Augustus Everett. The pair couldn't write more different tales, but when they both find themselves struggling to tell their stories, they get a novel idea. This summer could change everything for them while they challenge each other to break out of their comfort zones professionally...and personally. Can these two help each other break free from writer's block and find love?

Hello Girls (2019)

Hello Girls is one of Emily Henry's most underrated novels, but don't sleep on it! In collaboration with Brittany Cavallaro, this story is about two teenage girls who decide they've had enough of the controlling men in their lives. They form a plan to get out of their small town and move to Chicago and will stop at nothing to get the funds and resources they need to do so. The book is funny and dark in the best of ways and is a must-read from Emily Henry's collection.

When The Sky Fell On Splendor (2019)

When the Sky Fell Splendor is a stark departure from Henry's later pieces of work, but remarkable nonetheless. It's set in a small town in Ohio that was impacted by a local steel mill explosion. Seventeen-year-old Franny finds herself standing by hopelessly five years after the incident as her brother lies in a coma. In order to get through her unfortunate circumstances, Franny finds a group of people whose experiences mirror her own.

They spend their time together looking into ghost stories and legends, which are all fun and games until something massive comes hurtling from the sky. Suddenly, the things they thought were fantasy come to life right before their very eyes, and it's up to them to investigate.

A Million Junes(2017)

A Million Junes is a follow-up to The Love That Split the World. This book follows two families named the O’Donnells and the Angerts. These powerful families have a century-old rift between them, and Jack "June" O'Donnell has no problems with taking their rivalry seriously. That is until Saul Angert comes back to town, and she finds herself unable to stay away from him. Saul's arrival ends up causing a chain reaction and leads to the truth of the feud coming out, leaving June to question everything she ever knew about her family and their grudge.

The Love That Split The World (2016)

The Love That Split the World centers around a girl named Natalie who is spending her last summer in her small hometown in Kentucky. Everything is going well until she starts to see things that just aren't right. For example, her front door is red when it's supposed to be green, the stores she grew up seeing are completely different, every little thing just seems a little...off. As if that wasn't weird enough, her whole town ends up disappearing for hours and fades away into the hills.

Natalie then starts getting visits from an apparition known as "Grandmother" who tells her that she only has three months to save "him." The book is mysterious from beginning to end and has a beautiful story of romance woven through its pages, making it an interesting read.

I am the opposite of a casual Reputation fan. Four of my five most-listened-to songs on Spotify are from the 2017 album, I wore a Rep-inspired outfit to my Eras Tour show, and I am constantly analyzing (and talking about) its symbolism. I stand by the fact that this album, as misunderstood as it is, is actually the key to understanding Taylor Swift herself, which is why its rerelease is the one I've been most looking forward to. With TikTok, X (formerly Twitter), and Reddit, it feels like there's a new theory every day about when we'll get Reputation (Taylor's Version), but I'm pretty sure Taylor's been telling us the announcement date the whole time.

What Taylor Swift songs are on Reputation (Taylor's Version)?

Image via Kevin Winter/Getty Images for TAS Rights Management

We know that, based on previous re-recordings, Reputation (Taylor's Version) will have the original tracklist and an unknown number of vault tracks that Taylor wrote ahead of the Reputation era. PEOPLE also confirmed we'll be able to hear Taylor Swift's "Look What You Made Me Do (Taylor's Version)" in the new docuseries for the New England Patriots! You can also hear a snippet in the trailer for Ashley Benson's Wilderness ;). Here's what you can expect on Taylor Swift's Reputation (Taylor's Version). I'm really hoping the vault tracks include "I Don't Want To Live Forever"!

  1. "Ready For It? (Taylor's Version)"
  2. "End Game (Taylor's Version)"
  3. "I Did Something Bad (Taylor's Version)"
  4. "Don't Blame Me (Taylor's Version)"
  5. "Delicate (Taylor's Version)"
  6. "Look What You Made Me Do (Taylor's Version)"
  7. "So It Goes... (Taylor's Version)"
  8. "Gorgeous (Taylor's Version)"
  9. "Getaway Car (Taylor's Version)"
  10. "King Of My Heart (Taylor's Version)"
  11. "Dancing With Our Hands Tied (Taylor's Version)"
  12. "Dress (Taylor's Version)"
  13. "This Is Why We Can't Have Nice Things (Taylor's Version)"
  14. "Call It What You Want (Taylor's Version)"
  15. "New Year's Day (Taylor's Version)"

Are there any other clues that Reputation (Taylor's Version) will come out next?

Taylor Swift attends the 81st Annual Golden Globe Awards at The Beverly Hilton on January 07, 2024 in Beverly Hills, California.

Recently, Taylor showed up to the 81st Golden Globe Awards in an all green ensemble, which is already so Reputation-coded to begin with. However, fans noticed one teeeeeeeny tiny detail about her look that really leans into all the theories that Rep (TV) is next. If you zoom in on her rings, one of them is a snake that's wrapped around her finger. 🐍

Her Tokyo Eras Tour shows have also been filled with Easter eggs. All of her surprise songs have referenced falling apart, and a huge part of the Reputation era was related to a quote from Taylor that says "when she fell, she fell apart." Before playing "The Outside" as her piano surprise song on February 9, she made a joke that the song was 175 years old — which has Swifties thinking August 2 (175 days from February 9) could be the album's release date. Considering "The Outside" is off her first album, it's also possible we're getting Taylor Swift (Taylor's Version) in August!

However, a brand new Easter egg suggests we could actually get Reputation (Taylor's Version) after Taylor Swift (TV)! @megy9005 on Tiktok took a deeper look at the music video for 2019's "The Man," focusing on the wall with all the re-recording titles on it. If you look closely, the graffiti representing Reputation looks like it's made up of Greek letters. And what do some of those Greek letters translate to? "Final!" Having Taylor Swift's final two re-recordings be her name and her reputation is literally so iconic and I can't wait to listen.

When is Taylor Swift releasing Reputation (Taylor's Version)?

The cappuccino Easter egg from the "Karma" music video.

We don't have an official Reputation (Taylor's Version) release date yet, but all signs point to an announcement on February 16. Let me explain.

When the music video for "Karma" from Midnights came out, featuring a shot of Taylor holding a cappuccino, Swifties immediately picked up on the symbolism. The blue nail (which represents 1989 (Taylor's Version)) lines up with the 8 on the clock, and the black nail (representing Reputation (Taylor's Version)) lines up with the 2 on the clock. Taylor ended up announcing 1989 TV on August 9 — and then announced The Tortured Poets Department(also known as TS11) onstage at the 2024 Grammys!

And now, after announcing the Eras Tour film was coming to Disney+, we have a new potential release date: March 14. "I’m delighted to tell you that you’ll be able to watch Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour (My Version) a few hours earlier than expected!" Taylor says on Instagram. "Experience the ENTIRE concert film for the first time ever, beginning to end, including “cardigan” and FOUR new acoustic songs on @disneyplus starting March 14th at 6pm PT."

As @repudaytion points out on TikTok, not only has Taylor Swift moved up the film's Disney+ release, but it also seems to be an intentional move: March 14th is a Thursday, which is when Taylor usually makes her album announcements, and she says "6pm PT" instead of "9pm ET" like normal. (After all, Reputation *is* the sixth album!). Plus, the trailer for the film is primarily clips from the Reputation era of the tour! Our official guess at this point? Reputation (Taylor's Version) will drop at midnight on March 15th — right when you finish watching the Eras Tour film.

What is Taylor Swift wearing to Grammys 2024?

Image via Matt Winkelmeyer/Getty Images for The Recording Academy

Taylor Swift showed up to the 2024 Grammys in a sculptural white gown from Schiaparelli Couture. I love how Taylor has hopped on the corset trend. This is my favorite neckline in recent years! Even though the dress is white instead of black or green — and ended up going along with the Tortured Poets Department (or TS 11) announcement — I think it's still a Reputation (Taylor's Version) Easter egg. White is, of course, the opposite of black, so I think it's a more unexpected reference to the album, with black accessories like gloves, shoes, and jewelry being a direct nod. Plus, the watch necklace pays homage to Midnights! At the 2022 VMAs, Taylor wore another Reputation-coded outfit before she announced Midnights, so I think it's definitely a pattern.

Is there gonna be a Reputation Taylor's Version?

Taylor Swift performs at Optus Stadium on October 19, 2018 in Perth, Australia.

Yes, we're getting a Reputation (Taylor's Version)! Taylor Swift has been very vocal about the fact she's rerecording her first five albums. However, she's been less direct about the order or the release schedule, which is honestly more fun! The official Taylor Nation account added fuel to the fire when they posted a photo of Taylor rehearsing for The Eras Tour — because, like @nashs_mom on TikTok says, the pose doesn't match up with any of the songs. While all the photos they've previously posted match up with numbers like "Enchanted" or "Illicit Affairs," the new pose seems to match up with "I Did Something Bad" (which is both the last Reputation surprise song left *and* the perfect song to announce the rerecording).

"Hear me out," another TikTok user commented. "['I Did Something Bad'] was not part of the set list in 2023 but what if the first night of the tour in 2024 she performs [it] and announces REP TV."

"I literally ratatatataed as soon as I saw it," another user says, referencing the iconic production at the beginning of the song. We have less than a month before the Eras Tour starts up again, so I'm excited to see when we'll finally get a Reputation (Taylor's Version) announcement!

What caused Taylor Swift to make Reputation?

Image via Def Jam/UMG

Cover art for Kanye West's The Life Of Pablo, which features "Famous."

The primary catalyst for Taylor Swift's Reputation era was a phone call with Kanye West and Kim Kardashian. After Taylor said Kanye did not have her permission to say he "made that b*tch famous" in "Famous," a video leak from Kim seemed to show Taylor did actually give her permission (it was later revealed the video was edited, and Taylor gave her permission to be mentioned, *not* to be called a b*tch).

"#TaylorSwiftIsOverParty" began trending on Twitter, and everyone from the media to the general public began calling her a snake. So she disappeared from the public eye for over a year, and Reputation was born. The era was moody — and full of snake imagery. Taylor says in her TIME interview that the album came from "a goth-punk moment of female rage at being gaslit by an entire social structure," and told Rolling Stone in 2019 that Reputation was a "metaphor" and her "playing a character."

Charli XCX, Camila Cabello and Taylor Swift perform onstage during opening night of Taylor Swift's 2018 Reputation Stadium Tour at University of Phoenix Stadium on May 8, 2018 in Glendale, Arizona.

Taylor began writing Reputation in 2016, when she was 27. However, the stories she's telling go back farther than that since "Dancing With Our Hands Tied" talks about a relationship from when she was 25.

Is Reputation a love album?

Image via Big Machine Records

Cover art for Taylor Swift's Reputation.

While Reputation is sassy, moody, and satirical, I stand by the idea that it's actually a love album at its core. While the general public talked most about "Ready for It?" and "Look What You Made Me Do," songs like "Delicate," "Call It What You Want," and "New Year's Day" are all about healing after the media turned against her. The message of the album is all about how she wants to spend the the ins and outs of life with people she loves, because they make the boring days beautiful, which is also the sentiment running throughout "Lover."

"I want your midnights, but I'll be cleaning up bottles with you on New Year's Day" and "We can leave the Christmas lights up 'til January" are the same!!

What are the Reputation Taylor's Version vault tracks?

Image via Warner Bros. Entertainment

A Horcrux from Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part I

While we don't have the tracklist for Reputation (Taylor's Version) yet, she did mention in her TIME interview that the vault tracks will be "fire."

"I’m collecting horcruxes,” she says of the rerecordings. “I’m collecting infinity stones. Gandalf’s voice is in my head every time I put out a new one. For me, it is a movie now.”

I'm going to be real honest, this is the line that sent me into a tailspin because the idea that Taylor loves stories like Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and the MCU as much as I do is too much!! But it makes sense because after all, she *is* a storyteller.

There are generally two types of entertainment lovers: those who gravitate toward TV shows and those who adore the movies. For me personally, I find that it's hard to sit still for two hours, watching the characters live through whatever fantasies are being projected, all for it to end exactly as I anticipated before I even sat down in the theater.

TV, on the other hand, is my media of choice. Episodes are fast and dynamic, and the plot is ever-changing. You can control how long you watch, and then return to it at your leisure. Plus, there are countless communities dedicated to your favorite shows.

If you’re anything like me, and are looking for a couple of movies that you and your movie-loving BFF can enjoy together, then you’ve come to the right place. Keep reading for my list of must-see movies for TV watchers, from rom-coms to dramas.

If you’re looking to laugh your a** off, then Spy is a movie I highly recommend.
