Upstairs, Downstairs — Stream on Tubi

Upstairs, Downstairs is a brilliant 1970s series that explores the complex dichotomies between the ultra-wealthy nobles and their underpaid servants. Essentially, the series explores the eye-opening contrast between those upstairs and those stuck downstairs.

The series was revived by the BBC in 2010, yet was cancelled after just two seasons for failing to live up to the original show, as well as being accused of trying too hard to ride off the success of Downton Abbey.

While this isn't a Jane Austen adaptation like some other shows on the list, it does follow a fictionalized story about Jane and her sister Cassandra. The unique tale tries to get to the bottom of one of the greater literary mysteries — what happened to all of Jane's numerous journal entries? PBS describes this story as "a fascinating, witty, and heart-breaking story of sisterly love," and wow I couldn't be ready to watch this more!

Marie Antoinette on PBS

PBS

Marie Antoinette — Stream on PBS

I’ve always found Marie Antoinette to be one of the most fascinating figures in history. She was the original queen of controversy, getting canceled before cancel culture was even a thing. Ahead of her time!

But on a real note, I find her to be one of the more interesting figures of the 1700s. Marie Antoinette was draped in jewels and luxurious gowns mid-French Revolution, while the majority of France starved. What a jaw-dropping contrast!

Despite all her flaws and scandals, this series portrays the historical figure in a genuinely nuanced light that will change the way you perceive her for good. Sure, she was decked out in jewels when it was inappropriate to do so, but did she really deserve to be guillotined? The answer is no. She did not deserve to die.

Yeah, I'll be binging this ASAP.

Dawn Olivieri as Claire Dutton in '1883'

Emerson Miller/Paramount+

1883 — Stream on Paramount+

Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone prequel, 1883 follows the Dutton family origins as they make their way to Montana.
