5 Creative Ways to Save on Last-Minute Holiday Shopping

holiday budgeting
Down to the wire on your holiday shopping? That doesn't mean you have to completely blow your budget, especially not when you've been on the financial "Nice List" all year! Resist the temptation to pay a premium for convenience and try these five tips for smarter last-minute spending.

Cut The Clutter

Don't let your inbox be flooded with daily deals, which will only tempt you to overspend. This time of year especially, we're all bombarded with offers, newsletters and promos. To stay focused on what you really need when you are online shopping, take a few minutes and click "unsubscribe" at the bottom of the emails. Or, you can use a service like unroll.me that pulls up all of your subscriptions and let's you just make one click to get out of them. If you want some pertinent emails from your go-tos, the service lets you schedule your subscriptions into a daily email rollup that you can schedule for a certain time everyday to keep your shopping efficient.

Avoid Eye Candy

For those promotional emails that you do let through, don't click on the prompt to "display images" within the email. Instead, go straight to the "unsubscribe" link within the message. Do not mark these as "spam" or just put them in the trash; that won't stop them from coming. You have to actually click "unsubscribe" (the button is typically all the way at the bottom of the email, so keep scrolling!). You should do this especially for flash sale and auction sites, which can be some of the most addicting shopping experiences out there.

Clear Your Cookies

Remember those shoes you were looking at online? Ever notice how they keep popping back up on the side of your email or when you do a search or on your social media? It feels like those shoes are haunting you, and it always seems to happen when you feel stressed and might need a pick-me-up in the form of an impulse buy. Those are called "cookies." It's technology that retailers use to pester you about an item that you look at once on their site. It's not coincidence; it's a marketing effort on their part to get you to actually buy that item. And those constant reminders can come back to bite you in a moment of weakness. So clear your cookie trail! It's super easy: go to the preferences or settings in your browser and click "clear history and website data" then click "disable cookies" and like magic you'll never be haunted by what you were looking at wherever you go online.

Streamline Checkout

Once you've decided exactly what you need, check out more conveniently. Take advantage of services that let you check out safely and easily without having to enter all of your information again. Try Google Wallet, Apple Pay or Visa Click to Pay, which also offers exclusive deals for major retailers like Under Armour, when you check out using them, without the headache and stress of the constant entry and re-entry of credit card information. After all, time is money—and 'tis the season to save a bit of both!

Plan Before You Go

Now that you've cut the clutter, plan out the remaining of your shopping. You can go old school and make a grocery-style list of what you need before you go online. Just write it down like you would before you go food shopping and stick to it. Stay focused because it's easy to go down unwanted shopping rabbit holes in the online shopping world. Google's "My Shortlist" feature is a great way to stay organized when shopping online; it lets you sort by price and when you added the item and allows you to list a short description of the items you want so you'll remember later.

Never underestimate the power of gold letter balloons. They're our favorite!

If a pure candy charcuterie board is overwhelming, opt for a mix — supplement chocolate, marshmallows, and strawberries with meat and cheese for a board that's both lunch and dessert.

Mix up your Galentine's Day party mimosa bar by providing different juices and different garnishes that your guests can choose from.

Letter boards are a super easy and super fun way to add spunk to your party. Plus, they don't take up a lot of room so that's a win-win for us!

Grapefruit juice is the perfect addition to your Galentine's Day party's pink cocktails — or to sparkling water for a low-key mocktail.

Candlesticks, jars, cake trays, oh my! The more dishes, the better as far as we're concerned.

It's easier than ever to find super cute, super sassy napkins. It's a small touch that goes a long way!

Mini bottles of champagne aren't just good for your Galentine's Day party — have everyone write a goal on their bottle, and wait to pop it until that goal is achieved!

Find heart-shaped plates to add extra romance to your tablescape. *Sigh.*

Galentine's Day Party Favor Ideas

Miniature potted plants are as cute as can be, and when they're wrapped in pink napkins? To die for.

Cupid would totally approve of these red candy kabobs.

If you have a collection of white bags for your Galentine's Day party favors, go crazy with the designs! Draw hearts, arrows, or write a little note to each of your friends.

Nothing says "I love you" like knowing your friend's favorites — which means you'll knock beauty product gift bags out of the park.

Red lollipops get a fruity upgrade when you wrap their sticks in green tape. Voilà!! The cherry on top of all your Galentine's Day festivities.

Wall envelopes are the perfect place to stash all your candy — or a super artsy Galentine's Day note.

Less is more with a Galentine's Day party favor that lets your BFF know how much she means to you.

A little bit of thoughtful wrapping makes a colorful bouquet even more beautiful than it already is!

Add tiny bows to all your champagne bottles for a true coquette party theme.

Use a pair of scalloped scissors to turn regular gift bags into something even more eye-catching!

Galentine's Day party favors don't *just* have to be candy and cards — celebrate your friends' hobbies with thoughtful gifts, too!

We'll literally never say no to chocolate, especially when it includes flower petals!

I'll be the first to admit that I've resorted to 'doom spending' when life gets rocky, but the new TikTok viral trend of loud budgeting is making me rethink my financial habits. That's right girls — this is an intervention that involves us getting more comfortable talking about money. Now that we've ripped off the band-aid by saying the quiet part out loud, you're probably wondering what the heck loud budgeting is. One thing I can promise is that it doesn't involve screaming at your bank account — at least not anymore.

To help break this trend down and learn how to make it work for you, I spoke with Emily Irwin, Managing Director and Senior Director of Advice at Wells Fargo. Trust me — there's fun, relatable, and actionable tips ahead that'll have you in your loud budgeting bag in no time!

What is loud budgeting?

Image via Karolina Grabowska/Pexels

Here's a little secret about loud budgeting — it's not really new. Chances are that you've already implemented in your daily life at various points, but called it something different. Irwin said, "Loud budgeting is being completely comfortable with yourself to tell those around you, 'Here's my limitations with my finances.' It's about making purposeful and intentional decisions with your goals. You can always tell people, 'It's not personal. I just need you to respect my decisions [around money].'"

If loud budgeting isn't new, why is it so popular right now?

Photo by Karolina Grabowska / PEXELS

Irwin wants you to know that, if done right, loud budgeting isn't seasonal in nature. The reason it's trending is based on a few things in her opinion. She said, "We've seen a number of things affect finances in the past years. For example, inflation has been affecting different consumers and wages may not have been keeping up with cost of living."

She also said millennials are now finding they have to allocate additional funds to other responsibilities and more people are starting to think long-term. "Individuals who are interested in making a big purchase are starting to figure out that they have to either lower their expectations or save more money," she said.

How can I make loud budgeting work for me?

Image via Photo by Mikhail Nilov/Pexels

While she loves seeing more people talk about sharing how they're loud budgeting, Irwin advises against sharing your actual budget sheet with others on the internet for privacy concerns. "The last thing you want to do is trigger someone's financial insecurities or make them think they can target you," she said.

Aside from that, there are several ways to loud budget. "Again, get comfortable about where you want to spend your money and make sure that's tied into your goals. If you want to go out for dinner, tie it to a goal like date night with your partner. You can set allocate funds for one date night per month or whatever your budget allows," Irwin said. "On the other hand, if you know going out for weekly dinner and drinks with your friends or co-workers isn't feasible, ask if you can adjust where you're going. You can also tell your friends or co-workers that you're going to pass on a weekly outing."

What if I'm afraid of being judged about my commitment to loud budgeting?

Image via Karolina Grabowska/Pexels

The decision to make better financial choices is personal and not intended to hurt anyone's feelings. Irwin suggests that you continue to communicate with those around you so everyone is on the same page. She said, "Money is tied to our interpersonal relationships and can change the narrative of your behavior. You can even make suggestions to your friends about spending time together that doesn't involve spending money. Say 'Instead of going out for cocktails on this day, let's go for a walk in the park' or something along those lines."

Why is is so hard to stick to a budget?

Image via Liza Summer/Pexels

This is something we've asked ourselves so many times, but Irwin has an amazing answer for how to combat it. She said, "So many people get overwhelmed by their finances — multiple savings accounts or credit cards — but it helps to put things on paper. When you can see and begin to understand where your money is going on a monthly basis, it makes things a little easier."

She suggests that you change the way you look at your fixed expenses (housing, food, etc.,) by asking where you can be a little flexible. "Ask yourself if food includes shopping at Whole Foods and so on and so forth," Irwin said. Simultaneously, Irwin doesn't want you to get caught up in excluding fun things from your budget. It's okay — we're absolutely guilty of thinking that budgeting means we're no longer allowed to have fun.

"Most individuals, myself included, like to be able to have fun — whatever that looks like — and splurge. If we don't build that into our budget, a one-time event can derail our budget. So yes, your budget can include fun stuff," Irwin said. In other words, the no-shopping challenge can make you feel like worse if you decide to buy something based on impulse.

Overall, Irwin said that loud budgeting should be fun. She said, "You should feel empowered to control your financial destiny so you can be confident that you're making decisions you're comfortable with."

I have such a love/hate relationship with haircuts. While I love the feeling of a fresh look as much as the next girl, I hate having to spend $100+ for a simple cut and blow dry session. During my recent trim, I talked with my hairdresser, Jack Rehak of Jack’s Hair Design in Hinsdale, Illinois, about ways to keep a haircut looking new and best practices for keeping hair healthy. Here's what he had to say!

Here's How Often You Should Cut Your Hair, According To Professionals

I’ll admit it — it had been eight months since my last haircut. My hair had lost its shape, my layers were nowhere to be found, and my ends were begging for mercy. Life got busy over the last few months and I was neglecting my haircare like never before.

My hairdresser could immediately see that I was beyond due for a cut and said I needed to get more taken off than I was hoping. I was definitely disappointed — I'd been working on growing out my hair for a while now, and it just felt like my hard work had completely gone to waste. He explained that getting consistent haircuts is the key to growing out healthy and strong hair, rather than letting it grow and grow until it eventually breaks. So let's dig into the top three things you can do to avoid this scenario!

1. Just Get The Dang Haircut

Also avoiding a haircut like I was? You might want to schedule one at your nearest salon. Like my stylist said, when you wait too long between trims like I did, you risk your hair becoming heavy, dull, and lifeless. When the hair is dry or even dead, it’s nearly impossible for it to hold a curl or style, essentially collapsing on you and taking on more and more heat damage all the while. I know the pain of spending time on a blowout only for it to fall minutes later — it’s the worst.

According to Jack, getting a haircut every 10-12 weeks is the best time frame or your ends will pay the price. Between blow-drying, curling, straightening, sun, and weather, our ends get dry and start to break without the proper care. Getting consistent haircuts allows hair to bounce back, shine, and perform the way we want in a healthy way.

2. Leave-In Conditioners Are Your Friend

His top piece of advice to keep your hair looking and feeling hydrated between trims? Invest in conditioning treatments. Jack swears by the Olaplex conditioning system, specifically the No 3 Hair Perfector. Made with patented OLAPLEX Bond Building Technology™, this conditioning treatment repairs and prevents damage in as little as three minutes. No 3 promises to reduce breakage and visibly strengthen hair, so it’s the perfect assistance to keep ends fresh between cuts. Another conditioning treatments I’ve used and loved for years is the Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask, which is designed to restore moisture, elasticity, and shine to dry hair.

3. Switch Up Your Shampoos

Switching shampoos frequently is a pretty hot tip that I honestly hadn't thought of. Our hair gets used to the same products and grows tired of them, resulting in lackluster locks. Jack’s advice is to switch brands after finishing every bottle of shampoo to bring life back to your hair. Have two brands that you’re loyal to? Even switching back and forth between them after every bottle should make a big difference in your hair. I’m a huge fan of the R+Co Dallas Biotin Thickening Shampoo, which makes my hair look thick and full, as well as the Moroccanoil Hydrating Shampoo, which is so hydrating and gives so much shine.

In the end, navigating your back-and-forth relationship with haircuts often feels like a rollercoaster ride between wanting that fresh look and cringing at the receipt. Luckily, by using conditioning treatments and switching up your products,, you can keep your locks healthy, shiny, and full of life between trims. But take a newly learned lesson out of my book: don't let your ends pay the price for procrastination and just book the haircut.
