Wes Anderson’s Graphic Designer Has Some Inspiring Advice for You

Making a living as a graphic designer might sound like a dream come true for many, but for Annie Atkins, that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The design and film school graduate’s past projects include The Tudors and The Grand Budapest Hotel — the holy grail of modern film design — and she’s currently working with Steven Spielberg on an upcoming flick. Recently, she spoke at Here, an annual symposium featuring some of the world’s best creative talent. She dropped some knowledge on what it’s like to work as a designer in the entertainment industry. Scroll on to read her advice and fascinating behind-the-scene secrets!

Behind-the-Scenes Secrets + Advice

1. It’s not all movie magic and digital design. When it comes to making things look believable, it turns out old-fashioned craft still comes into play. It’s not all done by software. “The golden rule of graphic design in filmmaking is that if it was made by hand at the time, make it by hand now, and if it was made by machine at the time, like printing, then we can print it now,” Atkins says. Rules like that were followed to the letter on the set of The Tudors.

2. Multiple copies are critical. “Because we don’t shoot in story order,” she says, “We have to think about a thing called continuity, which is the most boring part of making a film, I think, and yet becomes the most fascinating part for an audience when it goes wrong. So you have to be quite careful with it.” If there are several scenes involving a telegram that goes from being clean and crisp to folded, stained, ripped or otherwise altered in the course of the film’s action, there have to be multiple versions showing different signs of wear. What’s more, there have to be duplicates of each in case something happens to them between takes.

Apply that same rule to every single scrap of paper or prop used in the making of a film, and it’s easy to see how demanding the job can be. “We usually make six identical versions of all paper graphics,” Atkins says. “If an editor needs to cut two different shots together because an actor missed his line or something and the blood stain is in a different place on each telegram, that blood stain is going to jump around on camera and it’s going to be a dead giveaway that everyone’s watching a movie and it’s not real.”

3. There’s design work available in the film industry. While graphic designers on film sets may sound like magical unicorns, it turns out they’re just regular creative people who’ve trained hard at their craft. And the good news is, there are plenty of jobs to be had by designers who are great at what they do. “I guarantee you whatever you’ve watched on Netflix in the past week will have had at least one full-time graphic designer on the show,” Atkins says.

4. You don’t have to live in LA to be a part of it. “I’ve never set foot in Hollywood,” Atkins says on her website. For someone who’s worked so closely with the most design-centric director of the modern age, that’s a strong indication that others don’t have to go to LA either. “We made Penny Dreadful in a little seaside town in County Wicklow, so you never know what’s going on right around the corner,” she writes. “I think you have a better chance of employment starting local than you do hopping off a bus on Sunset Boulevard with your CV and your backpack, which is how I’m imagining you now, wistfully. Part of me is wishing you a wonderful adventure and the other part of me is thinking look, come on, you should really be at home categorizing your serifs, no?”

Fans who were left on the edge of their seats after watching the first part of AHS: Delicate last year won't have to wait longer for part two! Emma Roberts and Kim Kardashian are gearing up to pick up where their characters left off, and sinister twists are about to get much darker. While we know the focus revolves around their interactions, we can't wait to see how Gilmore Girls star Matt Czuchry fits into what's sure to be a big reveal.

Read on for a mini recap of part one of AHS: Delicateand learn all the juicy details about part two!

Recap of Kim Kardashian's involvement in AHS: Delicate

Kim Kardashian as 'Siobhan' in "American Horror Story: Delicate"

As good as Kim Kardashian is as the icy publicist Siobhan on AHS: Delicate, don't expect her to watch herself onscreen. She appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live yesterday and explained why she hasn't seen herself in clips of the show when Jimmy Kimmel played and unsettling one.

Her character can be seen intimidating a fertility doctor to do her bidding as she pierces the top of his neck with a long orange fingernail. She smiled before saying "It's so funny, I can't watch it back," and then added, "I get so nervous."

She even talked about the difference between filming for TV and working as an actual actress. She said, "I called my sisters and I go, 'Guys. You — not to say you'd ever want to get into acting — but you are so lucky you can wake up and just, we can sit in bed and film, and you don't have to get up...like there is no schedule."

However, it seems like the budding actress took her new schedule in stride because Star Trek actor and AHS co-star Zachary Quinto applauded Kardashian’s acting chops.

“I did a cameo on this season of ‘American Horror Story’ and I got to meet her,” the actor told People. “She was so lovely and warm and, really, I don’t think she needs my advice.” Quinto added, sharing that Kardashian, was “really in her element” on set and he was “really impressed by her spirit and her openness…I really look forward to seeing this season because I think she’s gonna do a wonderful job.”

Recap of AHS: Delicate Part 1

Image via FX Networks

The first part of AHS: Delicate premiered on FX September 20, 2023 and centered around actress Anna Victoria Alcott's desire to become a mother. Played by Emma Roberts, viewers watched as her husband Dexter Harding (played by Matt Czuchry) was supportive of her IVF procedure so the couple could conceive their first child. Despite the previous struggles, the procedure is a success and the happy couple learn they have a baby on the way.

However, things go horribly wrong when Anna starts being followed and eventually experiences a violent miscarriage during her first trimester. Somehow the baby actually survives, but Anna still experiences a series of strange hallucinations and events. From losing her hair to vomiting a foreign object, she starts to wonder if something is wrong with her baby. There's also the fact that she told her publicist Siobhan (played by Kim Kardashian) that she'd do anything to remain at the top of the her career.

What's revealed is that a baby cult does exist and Dexter's dead first wife knew all about it. However, the cult still looks at him as a threat so it's only a matter of time before they close in.

If you need a refresher, catch up on the first part of AHS: Delicate on Hulu and be sure to check out the eery trailer for a look at part two! Also, get your hands on a copy of Danielle Valentine’s novel Delicate Condition to see how the story truly unfolds.

American Horror Story: Delicate Part Two | Official Trailer - Emma Roberts, Kim Kardashian | FX

We suspected Siobhan may have a darker role than Anna thinks and the trailer confirms it. As Anna gets further along in her pregnancy, it's hinted that her growing baby may not be 'normal' and there's nothing she'll be able to do about it.

We're crossing our fingers for Anna and Dexter, but the baby cult may have the final say in AHS: Delicate Part 2.

The first portion of AHS: Delicate Part 2 premiered on FX April 3, 2024, but the series will come to a close beginning April 24. All we can say is things are about to get extremely bumpy 👀.

What do you think will happen during the final moments of AHS: Delicate Part 2? Let us know in the comments!

Lorelai Gilmore might be one of our favorite TV moms, but there's another mother in the Gilmore Girls universe that always makes the list: Kelly Bishop's Emily Gilmore! At first glance during the pilot, the character appears a little intimidating, but the more we get to know her, it's clear that she's caring and lovable (just like Paris Geller, TBH). And, with the right encouragement, she's a lot of fun — just like Kelly Bishop herself!

Who is Emily Gilmore in real life?

Image via Netflix

While promoting her new book Have I Told You This Already?, Lauren Graham gushes about actress Kelly Bishop (who you might also recognize from projects like Dirty Dancing, Bunheads, and even The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel). Lauren says she's "so disciplined and so prepared and never, ever complains."

"Once in a while if we were working until, like, two in the morning or something, she'd get a little glimmer in her eye and she'd be like, 'Do you want to split a bag of Cheetos?'" Lauren jokes. Stars Hollow feels like our home every time we do a Gilmore Girls rewatch, so it only makes sense that the cast of Gilmore Girls would feel that kind of camaraderie and family environment on set.

"I'd tell her some story of some date I had [and] she'd be like, 'He sounds awful! Drop him,'" Lauren says. "She's always telling me how young I am, which is so fun, and she's like, 'Oh you have so much time,' and she's just lived this wonderful life and just loves me, and is so kind to me."

How is Emily Gilmore described?

Image via Netflix

Similar to Emily Gilmore, Kelly Bishop has a fiery spirit I just love to see, but she also has a heart of gold. From Gilmore Girls season 1 all the way to Gilmore Girls season 7 and A Year In The Life, Emily's love for Lorelai and Rory, as well as her husband Richard, unfolds in a really beautiful way. And behind the scenes, Lauren Graham says Kelly Bishop's the kind of mentor and mother figure we could all use sometimes.

"She doesn't have biological children and she always says, 'I'm your TV mom,'" Lauren continues. "[When we text], she signs TVM and I'm TVD, and we've just been really special people for each other."

Did Emily Gilmore go to Yale?

Image via Netflix

Emily Gilmore went to Smith College, which is located in Northampton, Massachusetts, and majored in History.

Do Richard and Emily Gilmore divorce?

Image via Netflix

No, Richard and Emily Gilmore don't get divorced in Gilmore Girls. While they do separate for a bit, they come back together and end up renewing their vows.

What happened to Emily Gilmore?

Image via Netflix

In A Year In The Life, Richard Gilmore has passed away (due to the real-life passing of actor Edward Herrmann), and Emily Gilmore is learning what life looks like without him. While this is especially heartbreaking (considering in season 1, Emily tells Richard he's not allowed to go first. Pain!!), Emily does learn about friendship and independence in a new way — and she always has Lorelai and Rory, of course.

Who's your favorite character from Gilmore Girls? I simple cannot get enough about Emily Gilmore, and hopefully we'll see more in A Year In The Life season 2 ;).

When anyone asks me for my favorite movie-viewing experiences, A Simple Favor (starring Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick) always makes the list. When I first watched the movie, I knew next to nothing about the plot, and it made the viewing experience ten times better, especially since I had a watch party with a bunch of friends who *also* had no expectations. I know A Simple Favor 2 is going to be just as sexy, unexpected, and gripping as the original. Keep reading for everything we know about the new movie, from the A Simple Favor 2 release date to casting announcements!

What is A Simple Favor 2 about?

Image via Lionsgate

A Simple Favor 2 will see the "return of Stephanie Smothers (Kendrick) and Emily Nelson (Lively) as they head to the beautiful island of Capri, Italy, for Emily’s extravagant wedding to a rich Italian businessman," according to the movie's synopsis (via People). "Along with the glamorous guests, expect murder and betrayal to RSVP for a wedding with more twists and turns than the road from the Marina Grande to the Capri town square."

The first leaked images show the aforementioned extravagant wedding, with Blake Lively's Emily in a wedding dress and Anna Kendrick's Stephanie standing by her side in a gorgeous floral midi dress. While the first A Simple Favor ended with Emily in prison, I have no doubt whatsoever that we'll see her make a grand escape to coastal Italy. The only thing chicer than martinis and crime at home is martinis and crime while basking in the Italian sun.

Is there A Simple Favor 2 movie?

Image via Lionsgate

Yes, Deadline confirmed in May of 2022 that we're getting A Simple Favor 2! The sequel film will be produced by Lionsgate and Amazon Studios, and reportedly, Paul Feig will direct again, while Jessica Sharzer will write the screenplay. I still talk about the script for A Simple Favor, so if Jessica is returning, I will be seated!

When is the A Simple Favor 2 release date?

Image via Lionsgate

I'm expecting A Simple Favor 2 to hit our screens in 2025. Filming was originally scheduled for the fall of 2023, but after the Hollywood strikes delayed a variety of projects, production on the film was pushed to 2024. A Simple Favor 2 will reportedly begin filming in April of 2024.

Who's in the A Simple Favor 2 cast?

Image via Lionsgate

We can expect to see Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick return for this sequel. Henry Golding, Andrew Rannells, Bashir Salahuddin, Joshua Satine, Ian Ho, and Kelly McCormack are also set to star in A Simple Favor 2. Glee fans will also love knowing that Alex Newell is joining the cast along with Allison Janey! We can't wait to see the characters they'll be playing!

How does A Simple Favor end in the book?

Image via Amazon

The A Simple Favor book ending is *wildly* different than the movie ending! Instead of Stephanie turning on Emily and joining Sean, and then Emily getting run over by a car and put in prison for the murder of her father and sister (plus, you know, all the other illegal activity), Stephanie actually takes Emily's side.

In the book, Sean stays in a hotel while Emily gets custody of Nicky. The novel ends with the police finding Emily's ring inside the car of her main victim (a move that was probably orchestrated by Stephanie since Sean gave her the ring), and Emily deciding to pack up her life and leave.

Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell's rom-com movie is full of fun, color, and lots of behind-the-scenes gossip, courtesy of the co-stars' undeniable flirty chemistry both on and off-screen. Described most popularly as "steamy," here's everything you need to know about Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell's Anyone But You — plus all the 2024 movies to add to your list this year!

Here's everything we know about Anyone But You:

Where can I stream Anyone But You in 2024?

Image via Eddy Chen/Sony Pictures

Following its theatrical release, you can stream Anyone But You on Netflix starting April 23, 2024.

What are all the Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell rumors?

Image via Sydney Sweeney/Instagram

Sweeney calmly set the record straight in regards to the aforementioned gossip and those Glen Powell rumors. In an interview with Variety, she clarified what their relationship is actually like.

“It’s a rom-com,” she says in the interview. “That’s what people want! Glen and I don’t really care. We have so much fun together, and we respect each other so much; he’s such a hard worker, and I’m a hard worker. We’re excited for the press tour, and I literally just left ADR with him. We talk all the time like, ‘That’s really funny.’”

Glen also jcleared up rumors of the alleged romantic connection in his interview with Men's Health. “When all that stuff happened, you know, publicly, it felt disorienting and unfair," he says. "But what I’m realizing is that’s just a part of this gig now.”

He went on to prove that he takes the idea of being an actor — and more importantly, a friend — really seriously, saying “the definition of a movie star is somebody you want to grab a beer with, and when you get too drunk and leave the bar, you can trust him with your wife."

Sydney Sweeney also talked about the rumors during her SNL monologue on March 2. "Me and my fiancé produced the movie together and he was there the entire shoot," she says. "And I just want to let everyone know that he's the man of my dreams and we're still together and stronger than ever."

When she asks the camera to cut to her fiancé, Jonathan Davino, they cut to Glen Powell, who made a surprise appearance during the episode!

If that wasn't enough, Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell embraced the rumors in order to market Anyone But You. During an interview with the New York Times, Sydney said it was all a part of their plan. "I wanted to make sure that we were actively having a conversation with the audience as we were promoting this film...Because at the end of the day, they’re the ones who created the entire narrative," she admitted.

This was a hilarious way to get viewers talking, and not take them too seriously, and I'm obsessed!

Is there an Anyone But You 2?

Image via Sony Pictures

"I'm just so thankful that everybody is loving [Anyone But You]...a little love, a little romance," Sydney Sweeney tells Jimmy Fallon. When Jimmy asks whether fans will get a sequel, Sydney teases "a high nine chance."

Glen Powell also confirmed the duo is trying to work together again! “Sydney is so easy to work with and so fun," he tells Variety. "We’re definitely trying to find the next thing. Please send us all the scripts you got...We’re reading everything and just trying to see what makes sense, what we can turn into something that audiences are going to respond to.”

What is the plot of the movie Anyone But You?

Image via Sony Pictures

Anyone But You follows two people whose hatred towards one another turns into love during a destination wedding, which is full of humorous hijinks. The movie serves as an homage to throwback romantic comedies like How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and The Proposal. "[It's like] that early-2000s big blockbuster that people love to go to that made you feel good,” Sweeney told Variety.

When is the Anyone But You release date?

Image via Sony Pictures

Anyone But You premiered in theaters on December 22, 2023. It was one of our most anticipated winter movies! You can buy the film on Apple TV+ and Amazon Prime now.

Is the spider in Anyone But You real?

Image via Sony Pictures

Yes, the spider in Anyone But You is definitely real, and it actually bit Sydney when they were filming! In the clip she brings to The Tonight Show, you can hear the shift in her voice when she realizes she's in pain...and then tries to tell everyone on set she's not acting anymore.

How else was Sydney Sweeney involved in Anyone But You?

Image via Sony Pictures

Sydney is way more than just a blockbuster actress. Anyone But You is truly her baby, having developed the spec script (a non-commissioned and unsolicited screenplay, usually written by a screenwriter who hopes to have the script purchased) over the course of a year with screenwriter Ilana Wolpert (of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series) and Jeff Kirschenbaum (of The Gray Man), before hiring Glen Powell as her love interest and Will Gluck (of the cult-classic Easy A) as the film's director.

“She never left set,” Will tells Variety. “Never went to her trailer. She’s so blazingly smart, and she’s such a quick study, and she’s not afraid to ask questions. Her other superpower is that she doesn’t sleep. Two hours every night.”

According to Gluck, Sydney also acted as a “camp counselor" on set in Australia, scheduling group activities like an outing to the Sydney Opera House and a double-decker bus tour. Can we join this group on their next group hang?!

Watch The First Teaser For "Anyone But You"

Image via Sony Pictures

"In the edgy comedy Anyone But You, Bea (Sydney Sweeney) and Ben (Glen Powell) look like the perfect couple, but after an amazing first date something happens that turns their fiery hot attraction ice cold – until they find themselves unexpectedly thrust together at a destination wedding in Australia," the caption for the official movie trailer reads. "So they do what any two mature adults would do: pretend to be a couple." A classic trope! And we're here for it! Watch the first Anyone But You trailer here.

Watch The Official "Anyone But You" Trailer

The second trailer builds on the chemistry we saw in the first teaser, and it looks just as steamy, hilarious, and romantic as we hoped. Not only do Bea and Ben have to convince their families they're interested in each other, but they have to convince their exes too?! Yeah..that's going to be tough. My favorite part of the trailer is when Bea falls off the boat and Ben dives in to help her — it's giving The Proposal!

We love seeing their chemistry play out on the big screen. You can also get your Sweeney x Powell fill with plenty of Euphoria and Top Gun: Maverick.
