How To Have The Best Weekend In LA, According To A Local

We're thrilled to kick off our new Jetset Journeys series, where we turn the best U.S. cities to explore this year into our own personal playgrounds. This is not just a travel guide but a way to spark your creativity and your wanderlust for weekend and week-long travel. Pack your bags , join us here every week, and get jetsetty this summer.

You could visit Los Angeles, California 100 times and have 100 totally different experiences. With a city as sprawling and diverse as LA, it's naive to arrive at LAX and expect to cover it all over a weekend. On the flip side, once you start researching what to do in LA, it can be overwhelming to decide what to prioritize for your 48-hour getaway.

That's where I come in. I relocated from New York to Los Angeles — I know, how original six years ago. In my time planting roots on the west coast and rebuilding my community in this eternally-sunny city, I've been lucky enough to experience the countless wonders that make Los Angeles such an essential travel destination (and home to some 3.8 million residents). Between lush hiking trails that lead to the ocean, rich cultural histories and Hollywood lore at every corner, and some of the best food on the planet, there's a lot to take in.

I've also played host to many friends and family over the last six years and have nearly perfected the 48-hour itinerary for a satisfying trip to Los Angeles. If you're seeking an adventure outside of the typical tourist traps, keep reading for some of my favorite local haunts to add to your Los Angeles bucket list.

Where To Stay In LA: Silver Lake Pool & Inn

Image via Silver Lake Pool & Inn

First things first, where should you stay when visiting LA? I recommend choosing a hotel central to all of your saved spots to avoid spending your trip stuck in traffic. As a Silver Lake resident, many of my recs are on the east side of Los Angeles. With that in mind, if you're not crashing with friends or family, I definitely recommend you check out Silver Lake Pool & Inn. The Pali Society property opened in Silver Lake a few years ago and has everything you need for a restful and comfortable stay. Situated in hip Sunset Junction, you're footsteps away from Erewhon (try the Hailey Bieber Strawberry Glaze smoothie, you won't regret it), Intelligentsia Coffee, Cafe Stella, and Donald Glover's new boba shop, Jellyman. In addition to gorgeous rooms, an elevated pool deck, and an Italian outdoor restaurant on the property, Silver Lake Pool & Inn also hosts Marco Polo Late Nights on Fridays with DJs and cocktail specials flowing until 1 a.m.

The Best Coffee Shops In LA: Canyon Coffee

Image via Canyon Coffee

Next on the agenda: where to go for a good cup of coffee in Los Angeles? Well friend, you'll be spoiled for choice in this caffeinated wonderland. Los Angeles boasts some of the most aesthetically-pleasing and well-reviewed coffee shops in America, so switch it up each morning by trying out a variety of our local faves. At Canyon Coffee in Echo Park (pictured above), it's not uncommon to be standing in line between chatty French tourists and off-duty models. It's the cool-kid choice for good reason, with delish oat chai lattes on draught, solid drip coffee, and effortless toast toppings like cinnamon butter and cacao nibs. Other crowd-pleasers includeMaru Coffee, which is famous for their cloud cream foam tops. They have three locations in Los Feliz, Arts District and Beverly Hills. Cafe Nido is another Silver Lake hotspot with an indoor-outdoor design that takes inspiration from Mexico City with canopied trees, wood paneling, and teal-tiled benches. You can't go wrong with a pastry or baguette with your go-to coffee order.

What To Do In Los Angeles: Mid-Century Modern Architecture Tours

If you're looking for a culturally-rich experience to add to your LA itinerary, get tickets for a 30-minute architecture tour of Richard Neutra's VDL House located in Silver Lake. With a $15 donation, you can immerse yourself in gorgeous mid-century modern design and learn something new.

The Best Free Museum In LA: MOCA

The Museum of Contemporary Art in DTLA is one of my favorite destinations for a creative reset in Los Angeles. General admission is always free, and you can delight in some of truly neat exhibitions like Carlos Cruz-Diez' Chromosaturation light and color experience, pictured above.

Where To Experience Nature In LA: Silver Lake Reservoir

The VDL House is conveniently located across the street from the Silver Lake reservoir. Post-tour, walk the stunning (and mostly flat) two-mile loop for a breath of fresh air and fun people watching. Silver Lake is home to many industry folks, actors, and musicians, so keep an eye out for a rare celeb sighting!

The Best Restaurants For Dinner In LA: Saffy's

Image via Saffy's LA

All of that adventuring will no doubt have you working up an appetite. For dinner, I highly recommend Saffy's LA in Virgil Village. This Middle Eastern restaurant is ideal for enjoying shared plates and trying a little bit of everything. Menu standouts include two unique hummus dishes, the little gem salad, and the beef skewers prepared at a wood-burning hearth with superb flavor. The design beautifully blends art deco architecture with Moroccan flair, making the ambiance and the feast all the more worth savoring.

Where To Eat In Los Angeles: Quarter Sheets

Quarter Sheets in Echo Park is one of the best restaurants to pop up in LA in recent years. Don't believe me? The New York Times even said so! As many like to tease, LA can be hit or miss when it comes to pizza. But the Quarter Sheets pizza parlor, founded by Aaron Lindell and Hannah Ziskin, knocks it out of the park with their thick, Sicilian-style pan pies and crave-able desserts.

My New Yorker husband and New Yorker father-in-law both agree Quarter Sheets is the best pizza they've ever had. Now if that ain't praise, I don't know what is! Pro tip: go early if you want to avoid the weekend lines. And order all of the desserts. Take 'em home if you have to, but don't leave without trying the Princess Cake or divine choco chip cookie.

Best Tacos In Los Angeles

It's impossible to talk about what to do in LA without hyping up the authentic Mexican food scene. While most of the best taco joints are locals-only hidden gems that line boulevards in unbranded taco tracks, or sit parked outside of car washes, there are a few must-hit taco spots everyone should know about in Los Angeles.

Guisados is lauded as one of the best taquerias in LA, for good reason. With multiple locations throughout the city, Guisados can be enjoyed for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Their handmade tortillas make every bite all the more flavorful. They also have one of the best horchatas if you want a sip of something deliciously sweet. For Tijuana-style tacos, Tacos 1986 is another easy grab and go bite. Their mushroom taco is an all-time fave for me. If you're looking for something more off-the-beaten path, head to DTLA and traverse the back alley of Mexican restaurant Damian to discover Ditriot Taqueria(pictured above), which boasts a delicious Mexico City-inspired flair. Whatever you do, do not leave Los Angeles without grabbing a street taco (or two!).

Where To Shop In Los Angeles: Larchmont Village

If you're like me and you can't visit a city without bopping around to a few cute little shops, head to Larchmont Village. It's inspired by the New York neighborhood of the same name and is a neat row of beauty stores, bookshops, cafes, and unique boutiques. Shorthand is a color-coded stationery store worth adding to your list, as is the Black-founded beauty boutique, Thirteen Lune. Chevalier Books (LA's oldest indie bookstore) is another can't-miss spot to explore on your shopping crawl in Larchmont Village.

Well friends, I hope this thought-starter list of what to do in LA has given you plenty of food for thought. If you want more personalized recommendations or have any questions, DM me @colourwars on Instagram and I'd be happy to help. Safe travels!

Are you feeling a lack of motivation lately? Don’t worry, because things are about to change. As we near the middle of 2024, you may have let go of your New Year's resolution or neglected your past passion project. The great news is that Jupiter, the planet of optimism and expansion, is leaving the earth sign Taurus and entering the air sign Gemini on May 25. In the next stage of our journey, we will be more socially oriented and open-minded to ideas from all sides.

Everything to know about the planet Jupiter in astrology

The Planet Jupiter

Astronomically, Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun and the largest in our solar system—also known as the “gas giant.” Jupiter can also be viewed as the bodyguard, protecting our home planet from incoming asteroids.

Astrologically, Jupiter bestows luck and expansive opportunities in our natal charts and transits. Due to its exuberant nature, it can over-inflate good and challenging aspects. In your darkest hour and time of need, look to your Jupiter sign as the key and clue to where you can find the silver lining. You may be in for a huge lesson and luck wherever Jupiter touches your birth chart or in transit. The teacher or guru often walks into your life around these momentous periods, and so long as you are open to learning, you, too, one day will become the teacher as well. When Does Jupiter Enter Gemini?

Jupiter in Gemini Dates: May 25, 2024 to June 9, 2025

What Does Jupiter in Gemini Mean For You?

Let’s explore this last year before we dive into what’s next. The planet Jupiter spends 12 months in every sign. From 2023 to 2024, while in Taurus, our primary focus was exploring the path of self-worth, wealth, and financial security. Although Taurus is a grounded and earthy sign, last year felt anything but because Jupiter inflates and expands on whatever it touches. Sound familiar? We experienced inflation, resulting in a rise in food prices while also becoming more indulgent and spending more on material comforts.

It could have been a challenging year regarding real estate or business ventures, as everything felt stuck because Jupiter enhances whatever it touches. With Taurus's fixed energy escalated by Jupiter’s influence, it could have already made us feel like sitting ducks with a massive credit card bill. Online shopping and retail therapy galore.

The good news is that as Jupiter shifts, we will focus on collaboration, communication, and multiple streams of opportunities. Although Jupiter is astrologically considered in a “detrimental” position with Gemini, there is a plus side when this transit occurs.

The sign of Gemini extends an outlet for us to become more experimental in our lives. It can be a perfect time to begin that side hustle you were contemplating alongside your job. This is the period to “explore,” not invest. Jupiter in Gemini will give us fun, exploration, and opportunity. Our social calendars are also expected to erupt, and it's time to party.

It is about openness and possibility – refrain from dogmatic systems to stay afloat.

Note that Jupiter last appeared in Gemini in 2012. Reflect on what happened in your life then and for the collective to see what themes may be resurfacing.

Meanwhile, if you have a mutable rising sign or are a mutable sign – Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, or Pisces – Jupiter in Gemini will light up your year.

What Happened 12 Years Ago When Jupiter Was in Gemini?

The last time when Jupiter was in Gemini, pop culture was electrifying with the rise of K-Pop, and Kim and Kanye got together, birthing their ship name ‘Kimye.’ We can expect bands to reemerge as Gemini is about interconnectedness and teamwork. Life was more collaborative and filled with incoming messages from all sides.

Information can get a bit scattered as Gemini represents messages and experimentation. So, it is best to slow down and listen intently before jumping into the next big thing.

It was also the year Taylor Swift released her Red album while dating Harry Styles. FYI, Taylor is a Sagittarius, and we will likely receive big news later this year. Here's a little cosmic intel: Jupiter will trine her North Node in Aquarius in September, opening a door for her to explore her story even deeper. It can push her to tap into a wellspring of creativity while she uncovers a new approach involving her talents. It will likely attract incredible breakthroughs involving personal development and destiny. Could it be a marriage proposal? Shift in love status? Album drop? Time will tell.

While we wait and see what happens, listen to The Tortured Poets Department. I’m a big fan of this one.

There's NOTHING like the Disney magic I felt in my favorite series growing up. Sometimes, it was the magic of coming of age, like in Lizzie McGuire, and sometimes, it was literal magic, like in Wizards Of Waverly Place. Turns out, I'm not the only one who misses Waverly Place because Selena Gomez and her onscreen brother David Henrie are returning for another installment of the hit series! Here's everything we know about the Wizards Of Waverly Place revival (fittingly titled Wizards Beyond Waverly Place) so far.

After starring in the series, the Wizards of Waverly Place movie, and The Wizards Return: Alex vs. Alex reunion special, the cast is "so excited" to return, according to executive producer Selena Gomez' Instagram story. "The Russo’s are excited to become a part of your family, once again, but we’ve grown," David says in an Instagram post. "2024, the year magic comes back!"

What is the Wizards of Waverly Place revival about?

Image via Disney

In this new take on the Wizards of Waverly Place world, Justin has traded his powers for a regular life without magic. But when a young wizard named Billie seeks him out, he learns that the future of the wizard world is at stake. We don't know what role Alex will play in the pilot, but we do know Selena is set to make an appearance. I'm definitely expecting her to give Justin some sassy advice — it's what Alex does best!

When does Wizards Beyond Waverly Place come out?

Image via Disney Channel

We'll see Wizards Beyond Waverly Place later this year!

Is Wizards Beyond Waverly Place a reboot?

Image via Disney Channel

The new Wizards of Waverly Place TV show will serve as a revival rather than a reboot. Instead of a new Justin and Alex, we'll see new characters as well as reappearances from our faves! In addition to David Henrie starring as a series regular and Selena Gomez making a guest appearance, the duo will executive produce.

Who's in the Wizards Beyond Waverly Place cast?

Image via Disney

Along with Selena Gomez and David Henrie, we'll see Janice LeAnn Brown as Billie, Mimi Gianopulos as Justin's wife Giada, and Alkaio Thiele as Justin's son Roman. We don't have other official cast members, but according to David Henrie (via People), they "definitely plan on bringing back the original cast for the series order."

Why did they stop making Wizards of Waverly Place?

Image via Disney Channel

There was a rumor that Wizards of Waverly Place ended so Selena Gomez could move on to different acting roles, although the actress never confirmed it. But as opposed to some of our favorite series that were cancelled out of the blue, Wizards of Waverly Place came to more of a natural stopping point by the end, and a finale made sense!

Where can I watch the Wizards of Waverly Place movie?

You can watch the Wizards of Waverly Place movie, all four seasons of the show, and Alex Vs. Alexon Disney+ now!

Are you excited to see the Wizards Beyond Waverly Place revival, as well as Selena Gomez and David Henrie as Alex and Justin again? Follow us on Facebook for more breaking news in the pop culture space!

Stomach problems are never fun, but they seem to be even less so when you're in the middle of a travel day. Ironically, that's also when they tend to flare up! We're all swapping spring break for summer vacation soon, which is why I talked to digestive health dietitian Alyssa Simpson RDN, CGN, CLT and The Points Guy travel experts Ellie Nan Storckand Caroline Tanner for all the secrets, insights, and hacks that will make your travel smoother (and less painful) than ever.

Why do I always have stomach issues when traveling?

Image via Jason Toevs/Pexels

Routine can benefit our mental health, but it also benefits our physical health, too! "Stomach problems tend to flare up while traveling because our usual routines, like mealtimes and sleep patterns, get thrown off, which can disrupt digestion," Simpson says. "Plus, not drinking enough water and trying new foods or eating at odd hours can make matters worse by dehydrating us and upsetting our stomachs.

"Travel anxiety significantly affects our stomachs," she continues. "When we're anxious, our bodies release stress hormones that can disrupt digestion, potentially worsening existing gastrointestinal problems or causing new ones."

And it turns out, flying itself can also affect your gut physically. "Flying or changes in altitude can make your stomach uncomfortable by making the gas in your intestines expand, causing bloating," Simpson says. "Also, the difference in cabin pressure and oxygen levels can dehydrate you, which might worsen digestion and existing stomach problems."

How do you fix travelers stomach?

Image via RDNE Stock project/Pexels

While travel day stomach problems can take you by surprise, there are a few you can do in the moment to help ease discomfort. "As a traveler with a colon disease and dietary restrictions, I always have Tylenol and digestive enzymes on hand," Tanner says. "Whenever I arrive at my destination, I try to locate the nearest juice/smoothie place to maintain the daily habits that make me feel my best at home."

"I usually bring Dramamine with me just in case I experience a rare bout of nausea, and I've recently been taking 1 teaspoon of digestive bitters before meals to help with heartburn (cute, right?) — they come in really small bottles so they're generally fine to go through security," Storck says. "The day before a long flight, I try to eat whole non-processed foods — nothing that could upset my stomach — and lots of water. I try not to drink on the plane if my stomach feels sensitive (otherwise, a glass of red helps me sleep!)"

You'll also want to be aware of dehydration on your travel day (dehydration makes everything feel worse), and that includes what kind of water you're drinking. "For those with sensitive stomachs, it's a good idea to go for bottled or filtered water while traveling because tap water safety can differ from place to place," Simpson says. "Opting for bottled water helps lower the chance of drinking contaminated water and reduces the risk of health problems."

"It's smart to be careful when sampling new foods while traveling to prevent stomach issues," Simpson continues. "Stick to dishes you're familiar with and that are fully-cooked, and avoid street food in places where cleanliness might be a concern. Also, keep an eye out for any potential allergens or foods that might not agree with you."

How to make travel easier?

Image via Brit + Co

Your travel day should actually start before you wake up. Just like meal prepping can set you up for an easy week of eats, travel prepping can ensure your day-of journey goes as smooth as possible. While you can't control flight delays or traffic, there are a few things you can add into your routine.

"Include stress-relief techniques in your plan and feel reassured that you have strategies in place to prevent travel-related anxiety from causing stomach issues," Simpson says. Try our Best Breathing Techniques and Daily Journal Prompts when you have a moment to spare!

"I definitely pack the day before and try to make my carry-on bag really organized (for example, I put all my chargers in a small pouch so that there aren't wires getting tangled, I pack snacks so that I don't have to spend a ton of money at the airport, etc.)," Storck says. "I also download shows or movies on to my iPad beforehand (or pack a good book) — I like having something to look forward to if it's a long flight! Simple things, but they help the day go smoothly."

"I try to plan in advance as much as possible to alleviate travel prep and travel day stress [and] I make a list of items I want to pack on my phone," Tanner says. In addition to packing plenty of snacks that are easy on her stomach, she also figures out what to eat when she gets to her location. "Depending on my flight time, I will pick up a Sweetgreen salad to eat on the plane to keep me satiated and full of greens until I can find my next whole foods meal."

Should I pack anything specific to avoid stomach problems?

Image via Brit + Co

It's a good idea to have natural remedies or over the counter medicine in the event you need to ease bloating or discomfort (think antidiarrheals, laxatives, or antacids). "Bring along essentials like enteric-coated peppermint oil capsules or activated charcoal tablets for bloating and discomfort, antacids for heartburn and acid reflux, and magnesium citrate or magnesium oxide supplements if you're prone to constipation," Simpson says.

"You might also want to pack dandelion or fennel tea for digestive support and hydration tablets or powders to prevent dehydration, especially in hot climates," she continues. "Just remember to check in with a healthcare professional before trying any new remedies, especially if you have existing health conditions or are taking medications."

And to make the travel in and of itself more enjoyable, Storck has a few travel must-haves: "Headphones, comfortable clothing (big fan of black leggings, sneakers and a sweater; I'll never be a fancy plane outfit girl) and my water bottle." Tanner's must-haves include a portable phone charger, headphones, eye patches, and sunscreen.

How to eat in moderation on vacation?

Image via Diana Titenko/Pexels

We're big fans of Little Treat Culture at Brit + Co, especially if you're somewhere you've never been before. I mean, how could you visit Paris and NOT buy pastries?! Even if you have a sensitive stomach, Simpson says it's okay to indulge — as long as it's in moderation.

"Indulge in local delicacies moderately, savoring each bite and paying attention to your body's hunger and fullness signals," Simpson recommends. "Include plenty of fruits and vegetables in your meals to offset any extra calories from treats and to keep you feeling full and satisfied. Also, incorporate physical activities into your plans to burn off any additional calories consumed from indulgences."

"To avoid stomach issues while traveling, steer clear of spicy, fatty, and greasy foods," Simpson continues. "Additionally, limit alcohol, caffeine, and carbonated drinks, and ensure fruits and vegetables are thoroughly washed to prevent food-related illnesses. Lastly, maintain regular meal times to prevent overeating and refrain from skipping meals."

If you do deal with the dreaded traveler's stomach (it happens to us all!) swap your fancy meals for a few tried-and-true foods. "If you're dealing with stomach issues while traveling, stick to gentle foods like bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast to soothe discomfort, and steer clear of foods that might worsen your symptoms," Simpson says. "Keep yourself hydrated, take time to rest and recuperate, and try relaxation methods like deep breathing or meditation to ease stress-related digestive problems. If your symptoms persist or become severe, don't hesitate to seek medical help."

Make sure to check with your healthcare professionals before trying new medication or making a major lifestyle change. Let us know your best hack for stomach problems in the comments and check out our weekend newsletter for more health tips and expert advice!

This post has been updated.

It’s always a good day when we get news from Reese Witherspoon, and in addition to learning more about the new Legally Blonde TV show, the Hello Sunshine producer is also giving us a brand new rom-com (thank goodness)! The actress and Reese's Book Club leader has starred in Your Place or Mine, Sweet Home Alabama, and Four Christmases, but her new movie, You're Cordially Invited, might just be her funniest film yet. Here’s everything we know about new Prime Video flick.

What is You're Cordially Invited about?

www.youtube.com

You're Cordially Invited - Official Teaser | Prime Video

You're Cordially Invited follows a woman (played by Reese Witherspoon) planning her sister's destination wedding and realizes they're double booked with a father (Will Ferrell) of a young woman (Geraldine Viswanathan). The official logline continues that "when both parties decide to share the small venue, chaos ensues and disaster awaits.” Considering how funny both Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon can be, I have no doubt this is going to be one of the funniest 2025 movies we'll see.

Who's in the You're Cordially Invited cast?

Image via Prime Video

You're Cordially Invited stars Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon in the leading roles. We’ll also see Geraldine Viswanathan and Meredith Hagner as Will's onscreen daughter and Reese's onscreen sister, respectively.

When is You're Cordially Invited coming out?

Image via Prime Video

You're Cordially Invited drops on Prime Video January 30, 2025.

What does You're Cordially Invited mean?

Image via Prime Video

You're cordially invited is an elegant way to say you would love to see someone as a guest at your event. It's encouraging, kind, and is totally contrasting the chaotic vibe of the movie. I wonder what Emily Post would think?

Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon is the duo I never knew I needed, and I can't wait to see them fight over this wedding venue. Follow us on Facebook and TikTok for the latest movie news!
