5 Common Things Draining Your Energy and How to Prevent Them

Does the idea of loving someone unconditionally worry you? If so, it’s because you think that love carries a risk or is dangerous somehow. 🚨⠀ ⠀ You try to stifle your love for people to protect yourself. But no amount of stifling will fix the issue because your fears come from two thought errors:⠀ ⠀ 1. You think there’s a limited amount of love to go around.⠀ 2. You think that loving someone means you have to act or not act a certain way.⠀ ⠀ People worry about getting “hung up” on someone who doesn’t love them back. Sure, if I sat around pining for some guy I dated in high school, thinking that if I didn’t marry him my life would be full of pain and misery - those thoughts would be problematic.⠀ ⠀ But that thought pattern has nothing to do with love. That’s a thought pattern about scarcity (believing there’s no one better out there for me) and attachment (believing reality has to be a certain way for me to be happy).⠀ ⠀ Choosing to love someone has nothing to do with that person being able to make you happy or needing to be in your life forever. It’s simply creating the feeling of love in your body, for your own benefit. 🙂⠀ ⠀ People also think that loving someone implies taking (or avoiding) a certain action. We think if we love someone we have to try to be with them, or do things for them.⠀ ⠀ But you can love someone and never speak to them again. Choosing to love someone doesn’t mean you have to do anything in particular about them, to them, or for them. You can choose to love someone and all that means is you are creating the feeling of love for yourself. 💗⠀ ⠀ If you believe that love is limited or comes with a predetermined script of how you should act, of course you’ll worry that love will make you powerless, control you, or make you vulnerable. And then you may feel trapped, obligated or resentful. Because you’ll be afraid of losing the feeling of love.💔⠀ ⠀ But whether or not we feel love is up to us. 💪⠀ ⠀ Choosing to love someone makes me feel enormously powerful. But before looking outside yourself to scan your lifestyle, schedule, and social circle for energy vampires or toxic relationships, Loewentheil proposes doing something different: Get a grip on your own thoughts. “The most draining thing in the world is being emotionally reactive to everything that happens around you,” she explains. “Whether you go to cognitive-based therapy, meditate, or, my personal favorite, learn how to coach yourself to manage your mind, creating more mental and emotional resilience is the most empowering thing you can do and the best way to create and sustain your energy over time.” She’s shared with us five common energy drains — along with how to fix them.

1. Anxiety and Worry: “There’s a saying that worry only pretends to be useful, and that’s totally true,” Loewentheil asserts. “Your brain can’t tell the difference between the present and the future, so it thinks that worrying about the future is somehow protecting you in the present — but it’s not. It just makes you experience the thing you fear over and over, and it’s exhausting.”

How to Fix It: Coming back to the present is the key, so pick a mantra that reminds you of the here and now. “Something like ‘I am safe right now’ or ‘I have everything I need in this moment’ is a good starting place,” advises Loewentheil. Recite or write out your mantra when you start losing focus on what’s in front of you.

2. Social Media: Sticky social media apps like Facebook and Instagram were designed to hook you, keeping you scrolling with quick rushes of dopamine, a feel-good chemical in your brain. Social media can also be toxic, selling you stuff you don’t need or leaving you to compare your reality to someone else’s fantasy. “Studies show that social media decreases your satisfaction with your own life and it makes it harder for you to concentrate or focus over time,” Loewentheil tells us. “Few people actually feel energized after staring at a scrolling feed for 20 minutes.”

How to Fix It: If your feed has you feeling down or drained, it might be time for a short break from social media. If dinging and flashy notifications from apps are distracting you from your goals, consider putting your phone on Do Not Disturb, changing your notification preferences, or turning off your phone entirely for a short time. “Turn off your phone,” Loewentheil agrees. “Go 10 whole minutes without looking at it. You’ll be horrified by how hard that seems at first but amazed at how much you can get done if you stick with it.” A few more tips: Put your phone away when you’re with other people, don’t scroll in front of your computer or TV, and only get on social media when you really want to focus on social media. “Pay attention to how you feel,” Loewentheil adds.

3. Insecurity: Loewentheil says that fear-based insecurities can leave you feeling exhausted. “Whether you are afraid that whatever you’re working [on] won’t be good enough, you’re afraid that the people you’re going to hang out with don’t like you, or you’re afraid you won’t keep up in spin class, it doesn’t matter,” she encourages.

How to Fix It: Work on boosting your self-confidence with concrete techniques and practices. Chart your progress and struggles so you can identify problem areas and see how you keep improving over time.

4. Multitasking: Have a habit of flitting back and forth between one thing and another? Loewentheil says she believes multitasking is a lie: “This your brain’s way of distracting itself on the regular. Studies show it can take between 20 minutes and two hours to get back on track once you’ve checked your email or looked at a text message. Your brain never gets to fully engage or enter a state of deep flow, and you end up feeling drained without producing much of anything.”

How to Fix It: Tap into a new schedule that accommodates a bunch of different types of tasks, and practice doing one thing at a time. “Set up specific times to check your phone and email, and sign out of programs like Slack that interrupt you when you have time set aside to focus on work,” suggests Loewentheil. “Start by working for a solid 20 minutes, and build from there.”

5. Disorganization: Clutter, chaos, or a general lack of organization can send your brain into overdrive too. “If you are working off a general to-do list, or, worse, keeping everything in your head, you’ll feel distracted and drained.”

How to Fix It: “Write down everything — and I mean everything,” Loewentheil says. “Professional, personal, whatever. Get it all out on paper, and then calendar what you’re doing. Repeat this process once a day or so, building out the calendar over time as more to-dos come up and get added. Once you know exactly when you’re going to do everything and have it all in one place, your body can stop draining your mental energy trying to keep track of everything.”

Between work commitments, grocery runs, and coffee dates, it feels like we barely have time to even make it to the gym. So when we do actually get our gear and go amid all these responsibilities (hello, 2024 New Year’s resolution), who can blame us for simply wanting to skip straight to cardio, burn as many calories as we can in 30 minutes, and then bounce? Unfortunately, this is a super ill-advised way to exercise, because it means you’re skimping on an essential part of the workout routine: stretching. Although adding a warmupmight mean tacking an extra 20 minutes onto your workout (you can do it!), the numerous benefits should make integrating stretching into your gym time a no-brainer. Nichole Tipps — lead trainer for V Shred, a virtual fitness training program — offers us some insight about the importance of stretching.


Everything You Need To Know About Stretching During A Workout

1. Why to Stretch: It’s not just for gym rats. According to Tipps, all of us, no matter how athletically inclined, should be incorporating stretching into our schedules.

“Many people ignore stretching when working out or just as a daily routine,” she says. “Stretching has an array of health benefits that serve as building blocks for longevity and physical well-being.”

Stretching increases flexibility, which improves range of motion in addition to improving workouts, and it delays the effects of atrophy later in life. It also aids posture and relieves stress. In terms of exercising, stretching has advantages both pre- and post-workout.

“Stretching increases blood flow to the muscles and improves your circulation,” explains Tipps. Because of this, failing to stretch beforehand can result in injury, and neglecting to do it afterward can lead to enhanced soreness and a longer recovery period. You’re also making yourself more susceptible to pain, inflammation, and tension in general, Tipps warns.

2. When to Stretch: Most people are at least vaguely aware of the benefits of stretching, but a lot of confusion surrounds when to actually do it during a workout. Contrary to popular belief, the heavy-duty stretching should be reserved for when you’ve finished exercising.

“After your workout is a better time to stretch with more dedication,” Tipps confirms. “Your muscles are tense, and they are tired and stressed in a good way. So stretching can help relieve that tension and reduce the soreness that results from working a muscle.”

Allot 10-15 minutes for these post-sweat stretches. Before your workout, simply stretch lightly, keeping the time to less than 10 minutes.

“Ease your muscles into the idea that you will be challenging them to perform,” Tipps instructs.

3. What to Stretch: Both of these stretch seshes should always address your arms, legs, and back, regardless of what areas that workout focuses on.

“There are different parts to each of these areas, so concentrate on those that your workout calls for that day, but don’t neglect everything else altogether either,” advises Tipps. “Remember, a lot of workout routines include compound exercises, which are multi-joint movements that work several muscles at one time.”

Although stretching might initially seem like yet another chore to add to your to-do list, its benefits are invaluable enough to no longer ignore. As Tipps encourages, “Stretch regularly, and over time you will reap the benefits and maintain your mobility.”

Whether you’re headed away on a quick weekend accompanied only by a carry-on, or jet setting on a bachelorette trip to celebrate a lifelong girlfriend, trips are good for the mind, body, and soul.

While the positive aspects that accompany traveling are plenty, it’s completely normal to experience anxiety around this process as well. It’s inevitable that each time you take a trip you’re usually forced to encounter one uncomfortable situation or another; planned or not. Maybe your flight gets delayed, your friend can no longer watch your pet while you’re away, or you get sick just days before heading overseas; the unpredictability of travel can be extremely anxiety-inducing, and we get that.

Instead of leaving you to fly solo to stress about the potential anxieties of any upcoming trips you may have on your calendar, we spoke with California-based mental health professor, Dr. Ishan Shivanandwho has experience in groundbreaking protocols for reversing symptoms of stress, anxiety, depression, and more.

What is anxiety?

Dr. Shivanand describesanxiety as "a complex state that can manifest in various forms and intensities, affecting both the mind and the body." He continued, saying, “At its core, anxiety involves feelings of worry, fear, and unease, often accompanied by physical symptoms such as increased heart rate, sweating, trembling, and difficulty concentrating. One way to understand anxiety is to think of it as the mind being overwhelmed by the multitude of thoughts, concerns, and stimuli bombarding it at any given moment. Just like a computer with too many open applications, the mind struggles to process everything efficiently, leading to a sense of being scattered and unable to focus.”

Why do I get anxious when I travel?

When it comes to anxiety specific to travel, the reason for why you may experience these uncomfortable feelings could be due to a multitude of reasons and can vary in intensity from person to person. Dr. Shivanand shared that travel anxiety could be in part due to “fear of the unknown, fear of safety, fear of flying, control issues, and past traumatic experiences,” as well other areas of anxiety including “separation anxiety, social anxiety, and health anxiety.” Dr. Shivanand went on to explain that, although fun, “traveling often involves stepping outside of one's comfort zone and encountering unfamiliar situations, environments, and people. For some individuals, the uncertainty of what to expect can trigger feelings of anxiety.”

No matter why you experience anxiety related to travel, “It's important to recognize that travel anxiety is a common and valid experience, and there are various strategies and coping mechanisms available to help manage it,” offered Dr. Shivanand. “These may include relaxation techniques, cognitive-behavioral strategies, gradual exposure to anxiety-provoking situations, seeking support from mental health professionals, and planning ahead to minimize stressors during travel.”

​How can I control my travel anxiety ahead of my upcoming trip?

  • Plan and Prepare in Advance: “Plan your trip ahead of time to reduce uncertainty,” says Dr. Shivanand. “This includes booking accommodations, transportation, and activities in advance, as well as familiarizing yourself with the destination, and local regulations.” Having a loose agenda of things to look forward to when your trip starts is a great way to get excited when thinking about traveling, instead of stressed.
  • Practice Relaxation Techniques: “Incorporate relaxation techniques such as deep breathing and meditation to calm and center yourself. Planning summer vacationhas me thinking about stylish duffel bags and small rolling suitcases so much that I almost forgot about all the lack of airplane etiquette that comes with traveling. I've briefly mentioned an overzealous passenger who swore an overhead bin space belonged to him before, but that's not the only weird and downright inconsiderate behavior that can happen during a flight.

It's just a solid reminder that all the personal prep in the world can't keep other people from getting in the way. There's always at least one person who seems to think you want their feet propped up by you, and we can't forget about the person who's impatient to get to their seat as if there aren't other passengers on the plane. To avoid making the mistake of being inconsiderate or careless, I'm sharing a list of 9 offensive things to avoid while flying. And with that, welcome to Airplane Etiquette 101!

1. Don't Complain That Someone Gets To Board Before You

When you're booking your flight, you usually can choose your seat assignments based on the ticket that you're purchasing. You're usually placed in different boarding groups as a result so please don't think someone is out to get you if you're placed in groups 4-6. All this means is that you purchased an Economy ticket that's placed you in a middle or aisle seat, or you may not have a boarding number.

Assuming someone shouldn't board before you based on their appearance or your annoyance isn't going to change what's on the ticket you purchased.

2. Don't Worry About Why Someone's Flying First Class

This one feels self-explanatory, but here goes: It's not anyone's business why someone is flying first class. Their job could've purchased the ticket, or they may have felt like splurging for once. It's not up to us to look at someone, judge their appearance, and say things like, "They just let anyone fly first class these days."

It's classist and — not to mention — childish.

3. Just Cooperate With The Flight Attendants, OK?

We've all been on a flight where at least one person decides they're not going to listen to the flight attendants onboard. This usually looks like refusing to temporarily turn off their cell phones, having their headphones in during important demonstrations and announcements, or being told to calm down if there's ranting involved.

They want to make sure everyone will be safe, including you.

4. Never Make Snide Comments About Parents Traveling With Kids

At the same time, being an asshole to parents who are traveling with kids just because you "really don't like kids" isn't going to earn you brownie points. This idea that children shouldn't be in public spaces when I'm sure someone travelled with us is wildly hypocritical and whiny.

A child may end up crying because their ears are popping or the plane is experiencing some turbulence. I highly doubt that they took one look at you and decided you were going to be the person they wanted to piss off.

5. Please Stop Repeatedly Elbowing Your Seat Mate

Respecting someone's personal space is one of the greatest forms of respect in public. You could be waiting to board the plane or you can be sitting in your assigned seat or you can feel comfortable one you're sitting down. Whatever the case may, continuously elbowing the passenger next to you isn't going to go over well.

6. Don't Open The Window Cover If The Person Actually Sitting By It Closed It

This really boils down to respecting someone's personal space. If the person sitting by the window has it closed, ask them if they mind opening it. Please don't reach over them to open it yourself because it shows a disregard for their personal space and, possibly, their preference.

This used to happen to me all the time when I was younger until I finally asked someone what they were doing. It's amazing how startled people are when you ask them a simple question because some people genuinely don't believe they're doing anything wrong.

7. Stop Blowing Your Nose Loudly In Your Seat Mate's Ear

The first time I flew to California, I wondered how I was going to survive being on a plane for five hours. I figured I'd be okay with reading a couple of books and taking a nap. While I did read, the nap didn't happen thanks to the person sitting next to me.

This person blew their nose the entire flight and balled up their countless napkins before placing them near my elbow. I couldn't even use my armrest because they insisted on elbowing me throughout the flight. Take it from someone who's been subject to this, don't be this person. It's really aggravating.

The solution? Just make your way to the bathroom and blow your nose to your heart's content. That way, you're not bothering the people around you, plus there's a trash can right there for your leftover tissues!

8. Absolutely NO Burping Or Passing Gas — Especially Without Saying Excuse Me Afterwards

Sigh. Please, just don't. If your body has to release gas, the least you can do is say "Excuse me," when seating on a plane that contains over 200 people. It's not like you can open a window to get rid of the scent that may come along with your body's gas so people will be aware of it if it's particularly, well, smelly.

Much like the tissue situation, just take a trip to the bathroom and handle things alone, in a closed room, away from other people.

9. No More Rushing People When It's Time To Deplane

Again, there are other passengers on the plane, so everyone will have to wait to exit it. It'll eventually happen, but rushing other people isn't going to make you leave any quicker. You may actually get a few dirty looks or hear some choice words if you're not careful. Please just sit back, relax, and make your move when it's actually your turn.
