This Is the Ideal Amount of Downtime You Need Per Day

Most of us struggle to find the balance of work, family responsibilities, and free time in our daily lives. And many of us often feel we’d be happier if we had more unscheduled downtime. Maybe we find ourselves fantasizing about a life spent on a beach somewhere, lazing the days away with piña coladas in hand. But would lots more leisure time really would leave us more fulfilled?

While needs vary among individuals, a new survey found that overall, people were happiest when they had a mix of effort and relaxation each day. The sweet spot? Four to five hours of downtime daily. The survey also found that most people would rather have more free time than more money and wouldn’t give up one second for one cent. The time of day spent on leisure affected people’s enjoyment of it too. Getting home after 6pm made people twice as likely to feel unhappy than arriving home by 5pm. And differences in preferred ways to spend extra time showed up by age group, gender, and whether the survey respondents were European or American. Not surprisingly, however, across the board, the least popular way to spend free time was cleaning.

Downtime for Mental Health

There’s more to downtime than just empty hours of the day. Our bodies and brains need breaks. Free time allows us the opportunity to socialize, exercise, or get some extra rest, all known mental health boosters. And even if we feel bored by excess time, a little boredom has been shown to have major benefits on the brain, increasing creativity and helping us build neural connections.

Too Much Free Time?

Certainly, the benefits of having a few extra hours in the day are well established, but research shows that there is actually such a thing as having too much time on your hands. Spending our days idle could detract from the sense of purpose we all need to keep us mentally healthy.

Too many open hours can also lead us unwise decision-making. A study conducted by the University of Cincinnati and Baylor University found that people who had increased “time affluence” (AKA an overabundance of spare time) often ended up making impulsive, materialistic purchases, resulting in them feeling less happy. The takeaway: If you have a few extra hours, don’t burn them up at the mall. Try volunteering, calling a friend, or reading a book.

Getting the Most out of Your Downtime

We all want to get the most out of our precious free time, so it can be easy to fall into the habit of penciling in activities for every last minute. But experts say the key to enjoying downtime is to *not* overschedule it. Taking the focus off productivity allows for more enjoyment of leisure activities. Let that free time be free!

Additionally, many mental health pros recommend not using all of your extra time on screens. Too many hours in the glow of your laptop, TV, or phone causes the “processing” areas of the brain to atrophy. Strive for a balance of screen-based leisure activities with other choices like an outdoor walk, a relaxing bath, or playing with your kids or pets.

Finally, if you feel you’re not getting enough breaks in your day, try taking inventory. Over a few days or a week, track your free time and how you spend it. You may find you have more than you realize, or you might be able to spot ways to cut out unfulfilling tasks in favor of more worthwhile pursuits.

Traveling can be so rewarding; new experiences lend to a broader and more understanding mindset and taking time away from your everyday routine can feel like a much-needed breath of fresh air. Whether you’re headed away on a quick weekend accompanied only by a carry-on, or jet setting on a bachelorette trip to celebrate a lifelong girlfriend, trips are good for the mind, body, and soul.

While the positive aspects that accompany traveling are plenty, it’s completely normal to experience anxiety around this process as well. It’s inevitable that each time you take a trip you’re usually forced to encounter one uncomfortable situation or another; planned or not. Maybe your flight gets delayed, your friend can no longer watch your pet while you’re away, or you get sick just days before heading overseas; the unpredictability of travel can be extremely anxiety-inducing, and we get that.

Instead of leaving you to fly solo to stress about the potential anxieties of any upcoming trips you may have on your calendar, we spoke with California-based mental health professor, Dr. Ishan Shivanandwho has experience in groundbreaking protocols for reversing symptoms of stress, anxiety, depression, and more.

What is anxiety?

Dr. Shivanand describesanxiety as "a complex state that can manifest in various forms and intensities, affecting both the mind and the body." He continued, saying, “At its core, anxiety involves feelings of worry, fear, and unease, often accompanied by physical symptoms such as increased heart rate, sweating, trembling, and difficulty concentrating. One way to understand anxiety is to think of it as the mind being overwhelmed by the multitude of thoughts, concerns, and stimuli bombarding it at any given moment. Just like a computer with too many open applications, the mind struggles to process everything efficiently, leading to a sense of being scattered and unable to focus.”

Why do I get anxious when I travel?

Image via Cora Pursley/Dupe

When it comes to anxiety specific to travel, the reason for why you may experience these uncomfortable feelings could be due to a multitude of reasons and can vary in intensity from person to person. Dr. Shivanand shared that travel anxiety could be in part due to “fear of the unknown, fear of safety, fear of flying, control issues, and past traumatic experiences,” as well other areas of anxiety including “separation anxiety, social anxiety, and health anxiety.” Dr. Shivanand went on to explain that, although fun, “traveling often involves stepping outside of one's comfort zone and encountering unfamiliar situations, environments, and people. For some individuals, the uncertainty of what to expect can trigger feelings of anxiety.”

No matter why you experience anxiety related to travel, “It's important to recognize that travel anxiety is a common and valid experience, and there are various strategies and coping mechanisms available to help manage it,” offered Dr. Shivanand. “These may include relaxation techniques, cognitive-behavioral strategies, gradual exposure to anxiety-provoking situations, seeking support from mental health professionals, and planning ahead to minimize stressors during travel.”

How can I control my travel anxiety ahead of my upcoming trip?

  • Plan and Prepare in Advance: “Plan your trip ahead of time to reduce uncertainty,” says Dr. Shivanand. “This includes booking accommodations, transportation, and activities in advance, as well as familiarizing yourself with the destination, and local regulations.” Having a loose agenda of things to look forward to when your trip starts is a great way to get excited when thinking about traveling, instead of stressed.
  • Practice Relaxation Techniques: “Incorporate relaxation techniques such as deep breathing and meditation to calm and center yourself. [Yoga of Immortals] Breathwork and Advance Cognitive sessions can really help,” says Dr. Shivanand. As the founder of the Yoga of Immortals practice, he uses its principles in his everyday life and has seen how it can positively impact the lives of others from a mental health standpoint. However, any type of yoga, meditation, and other similar practices you're familiar with should help.

  • Create a Checklist: “Create a checklist of essential items to pack and tasks to complete before your trip to stay organized and minimize last-minute stressors,” shared Dr. Shivanand. “Organizing your belongings and documents can also help you feel more in control during your travels.” The simple task of crossing off packing items from a list can feel cathartic and ensure you don’t forget anything essential during your travels.
  • Stay Connected: “Maintain communication with friends or family members before, during, and after your trip,” Dr. Shivanand recommends. “Knowing that you have someone to reach out to for support or guidance can provide reassurance and alleviate feelings of isolation.” News flash, the people you care about care about you too! They’ll be happy to hear from you and walk you through any tough feelings, if need be.
  • Stay Grounded: “Practice mindfulness and grounding techniques to stay present and centered during your travels,” shared Dr. Shivanand. Embrace the ‘pinch me’ moments of your trip as they happen, this is why you’re traveling in the first place after all!

  • Seek Professional Support: “If travel-related anxiety significantly impacts your ability to engage in travel experiences, consider seeking support from a mental health professional,” says Dr. Shivanand. Listen; asking for help is okay, and something that you should do if it will have a positive impact on your life.
  • Incorporate Meditative & Wellness Daily: In doing so, Dr Shivanand says, "One can effectively manage travel-related anxiety and enjoy your travel experiences with greater ease and confidence.” Dr. Shivanand reiterates that “it's okay to seek support and take proactive steps to prioritize your mental well-being during your travels.”

We might have been in our Barbie era last year, but we're already looking forward to season 2 of Wednesday in all its lacy, gothic glory. The first season offered the perfect balance of spooky horror, friendships, and romance, and it looks like the next installment will give us even MORE classic Tim Burton details we love. Keep reading to see what lead actress Jenna Ortega has to say about Wednesday season 2!

Who's in the Wednesday season 2 cast?

Image via Helen Sloan/Netflix

Netflix just posted this brand new photo from set and it confirms the Wednesday season 2 cast list! We now know for sure that we'll see Georgie Farmer, Victor Dorobantu, Luyanda Unati Lewis-Nayo, Joy Sunday, Owen Painter, Emma Myers, Billie Piper, Jenna Ortega, Evie Templeton, Luis Guzmán, Isaac Ordonez, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Alfred Gough, Noah Taylor, Miles Millar, Tim Burton, Steve Buscemi, Moosa Mostafa, and Hunter Doohan in season 2 of Wednesday. Deadline confirmed that season 1 regulars Percy Hynes White, Jamie McShane and Naomi J Ogawa will not be returning.

We know that Jenna Ortega will return as Wednesday, but during her Actors on Actors chat with Elle Fanning, Fanning REALLY wants to know if Weems (the principal of Wednesday's Nevermore Academy, played by Game of Thrones' Gwendoline Christie) will return, Ortega doesn't hesitate to voice how much she loved working with the actress: "I would die to work with Gwendolyn Christie for the rest of my life."

"Wednesday's relationship with Weems is one of my favorite because they're very, very different women and they're constantly against each other but simultaneously they both want to watch each other's successes," she continues. "And Gwendolyn being as talented as she is, she's just really, really a pleasure to work with, so I'm doing everything in my power to throw out the most insane plots that would possibly bring this woman back from the dead." Never say never!

Is season 2 Wednesday going to be scary?

"We’re definitely expanding on the supernatural world," Jenna Ortega tells Vanity Fair. "Our show had all sorts of werewolves and vampires and da-ta-da. And I think we expand on that a little bit."

"In the first season we had episodes that really stood out visually, like the dance episode was a really big one for people, and that setting was very particular and it felt like Prom Night, a little bit, or Carrie," she continues. "Every episode [of season two] that I’ve read so far is like that. It just stands out on its own as a very memorable scene or bit or setting, which I think is what I’m most excited for."

What is Wednesday season 2 about?

Wednesday. (L to R) Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams, Emma Myers as Enid Sinclair in episode 102 of Wednesday. Image via Netflix.

"We've had a lot of conversations and I think we've decided things that we definitely want to enhance or dive a little bit deeper in," Ortega says during her Actors on Actors interview with Elle Fanning.

In addition to leading the cast, Ortega is serving as producer this time around. She's mentioned how collaborative and welcoming series director Tim Burton has been throughout the whole process, and how excited she is to voice her own ideas. "I think we want to lean into the horror aspect of the show a little bit more because it is so lighthearted," she continues. "A show like this, you know, with vampires and werewolves and superpowers, [you don't] want to take yourself too seriously. So I think that we're ditching any romantic love interest for Wednesday which is really great, and then also we have such incredible female leads in the show."

On January 15, Jenna Ortega revealed she's got her hands on the first few scripts for Wednesday season 2. “We’re definitely leaning into a little bit more horror,” Ortega tells E! News. "There’s really, really good one-liners and I think everything’s bigger. It’s a lot more action-packed. Each episode will probably feel a little bit more like a movie, which is nice.”

When is the season 2 Wednesday release date?

You'll be able to stream Wednesday season 2 on Netflix, which is where you can watch season 1 right now! We don't have an official release date but we hope to see the new season in late 2024 or early 2025!

Where is Wednesday season 2 filmed?

Via Deadline, season 2 of Wednesday has moved from Romania (where they shot season 1) to Ireland. They're reportedly aiming to start filming in April. Considering last season began shooting in September 2021 and premiered in November 2022, we're expecting to see Wednesday season 2 at the end of 2024 or the beginning of 2025.

How old is Wednesday Addams?

Wednesday Addams is 15 years old at the beginning of the Netflix series. This version of the character is older than other versions, and in the past, we've seen her at six years old and 13.

We've collectively decided spring is the perfect time to hit the reset button because January put us through the wringer. Now that we’ve set aside our resolutions and need forself-improvement for something that feels more idyllic, we’re ready to share how you can romanticize your life too. Since you’ll be spending more time in the sun (finally) and watching gorgeous flowers bloom, spring is the best time to start this new trend because it’s when everything truly starts to feel new. Hey Alexa, play “Flowers” by Miley Cyrus, please!

Make a Playlist Full of Affirmations

Listening to a good playlist full of affirmative lyrics is an instant mood-booster and a super easy way to romanticize your life. From Taylor Swift to Janelle Monáe, there’s so many empowering songs you can add to help you set the tone for the day. If you don't have time to listen to music while getting ready for work or school in the mornings, make sure you download your playlist to your phone so you can listen to it during your commute! Check out 40 Motivational Affirmations To Encourage Youtoo!

Go For Daily Walks

Image via Bruno Cervera/Pexels

It’s easy to get used to bed-rotting, but nothing compares to getting a healthy dose of Vitamin D via daily walks. The best part about it is that you don’t have to accomplish a 20-mile trek. Simply cruising around your neighborhood or local park one to two times per day counts. Just don’t forget to invest in a great pair of walking shoes!

Learn to Make Your Own Version of the Sleepy Girl Mocktail

Image via cottonbro studio/Pexels

You’ve seen the coveted sleepy girl mocktail floating around TikTok and are wondering if it’s worth making. The short answer is hell yes! Some of our team deals with insomnia periodically and have recently found that drinking a sleepy girl mocktail a few times a week induces restful sleep.

Open Your Blinds on Sunny Days

Image via cottonbro studio/Pexels

Growing up in a Jamaican household means that our blinds were always open on sunny days because "You need to let natural light come in whenever you can." Whether you heard something similar or not, open windows definitely have a positive effect on your mood. This could be a stretch, but it almost feels like the sun's rays shine their light in as many places as possible! This is just one surefire way to romanticize your life.

Sit on Your Balcony or Patio

Image via cottonbro studio/Pexels

Our grandparents had the right idea when they’d use to sit on their patios in the morning with a hot cup of coffee or freshly squeezed juice. Some of my fondest memories involve sitting with my grandmother on her patio and watching cars go by. If we weren’t doing that, I’d sit and watch her prep collard greens to cook later on.

You don't have to prep a portion of your meals while sitting on your balcony, but you can read a book, listen to a couple of new podcasts, or put your meditation skills to use.

Buy Yourself Fresh Flowers

Image via Antoni Shkraba/Pexels

The second Miley Cyrus released “Flowers” and I listened to the lyrics, I knew she was on to something huge. I know it’s romantic to expect a charming prince or princess to surprise you with a lush bouquet of flowers, but it’s just as lovely to buy your own. Before I entered into my committed relationship and baby era, my single girl days were filled with buying fresh flowers to brighten my kitchen. It’s something I still do on a monthly basis because it instantly puts a smile on my face.

Treat Yourself

Image via Uriel Mont/Pexels

We know inflation is coming for everyone's pockets, but you should still enjoy nice things from time to time. Since buying yourself flowers is just one way to participate inlittle treat culture, we figure there are other things you can focus on if you're not really into that.

Your idea of a small treat can be everything from your favorite Starbucks drink to that cute new blush you’ve been eyeing at Target.

Invest In Pink Blush

Image via RDNE Stock project/Pexels

If you haven't already, spring is the best time to invest in pink blush. Yes, we're talking barbiecore pink. The one we can't get enough of lately is Danessa Myricks Beauty's Yummy Skin Blurring Balm Powder Flushed — Matte Color for Cheek & Lip in the shade "IT Girl." It's a cool-toned pink that works for every skin tone and mimics the natural appearance of flushed cheeks.

Paint Your Nails

Romanticize your life by doing an at-home manicure! It's time to break out your spring nail colors if you've been wearing jewel-toned nail polish. While we love a cute pastel moment that mirrors Easter centerpieces, you can easily choose neon pink, green, or yellow nail polish. If you're feeling artsy, try your hand at a few nail art ideas.

Check One Thing Off Your Bucket List

We all have one thing we really want to do. It could be conquering your fear of swimming, bungee jumping, or even learning how to ride a horse. Even though it's not a huge thing, something I really want to get into is rollerskating this spring! My sister and I used to skate as kids, but haven't touched them in years. Whatever your personal thing is, make sure to check it off your bucket list this spring!

Austin Butler as Elvis, Selena Gomez as Linda Rondstat, and now Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan — there will never be enough biopics for me! (The real question is when are we going to get a Taylor Swift movie?). When pictures from the set of the new Bob Dylan movie, A Complete Unknown, hit Twitter, I had to do a double take because Timothée Chalamet looks so much like the musician I couldn't believe my eyes!

Timothée is going to be joined by Met Gala queen Elle Fanning, as well as Top Gun superstar Monica Barbaro. Here's everything you need to know about the movie — and our favorite Bob Dylan songs to listen to while you wait for its release.

Elle Fanning and Timothée Chalamet In "A Complete Unknown"

twitter.com

Elle Fanning totally embodies the late '60s vibe in this fall outfit. The bold maroon blazer, the long straight hair, and the striped turtleneck — I love it all! Elle is starring this Bob Dylan movie as Sylvie Russo, a university student and artist Bob falls for in the '60s.

twitter.com

Thanks to some onset leaks, we also got a glimpse of the movie's version of The Freewheelin'! Elle Fanning and Timothée Chalamet look incredible as Sylvia Russo and Bob Dylan. I'm a sucker for any kind of recreation, so seeing this new version of the classic record cover is incredible!!

Monica Barbaro Sings Her Heart Out

twitter.com

We also got a look at Monica Barbaro as singer-songwriter Joan Baez, who was one of the first major artists in the 1960s to record Bob Dylan's music!

The First Pictures From Timothée Chalamet's Bob Dylan Movie

twitter.com

Timothée Chalamet has totally transformed into Bob Dylan on the set of A Complete Unknown. And when I saw the pictures of Timothée carrying the guitar my jaw dropped!! He completely engrossed himself in Wonka and Dune 2 and I'm so excited to see him do the same for this Bob Dylan movie.

What is the movie about Bob Dylan called?

Images via H. Thompson/Evening Standard/Hulton Archive/Amy Sussman/Getty Images

Timothée Chalamet's Bob Dylan movie is called A Complete Unknown. As of March 2024, the movie is filming around New York City, and James Mangold is serving as director (you might recognize his name from Logan, Girl, Interrupted, and Walk the Line). The movie will reportedly cover the period during the 1960s when Bob Dylan shifted from folk to rock'n'roll, changing the face of pop culture (and culture in general, TBH), forever.

"When that movie finally comes out, people are going to be shocked because you're going to think you're hearing Bob Dylan sing," vocal coach Eric Vetro tells PEOPLE. "[Timothée Chalamet] just has this uncanny ability to not impersonate, but really breathe life into it. He's embodying Bob Dylan and what he was like at that age."

Who else is in A Complete Unknown with Timothée Chalamet?

Images via Amy Sussman/Jon Kopaloff/Getty Images/Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images for The Gotham Film & Media Institute

The A Complete Unknown cast is incredible! Alongside Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan, we'll see Top Gun: Maverick's Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez, Elle Fanning as Sylvie Russo, Edward Norton as Pete Seeger, Boyd Holbrook as Johnny Cash, and Nick Offerman as Alan Lomax.

When is the Bob Dylan movie coming out?

Image via Pascal Le Segretain/Getty Images

We don't have an official release date for A Complete Unknown. However, since filming has already commenced, there's a good chance we'll see the movie in the fall of 2025. And since Timothée Chalamet has been seen in turtlenecks, hats, and jackets on set, this sounds like the perfect fall movie to me!

I always need some brand new music to listen to once the weather gets chilly, and I will for sure be listening to anything Timothée records.

What song did Bob Dylan write for a movie?

Image via Christopher Polk/Getty Images for VH1

Bob Dylan wrote "Things Have Changed" for the 2000 movie Wonder Boys, which starred Michael Douglas, Tobey Maguire, and Katie Holmes. This Bob Dylan song ended up winning the Academy Award for Best Original Songand the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song!

"Knockin' On Heaven's Door," which is arguably the singer's most popular track, was released two months after the 1973 premiere of Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid as a part of the film's soundtrack.

What are some other Bob Dylan songs to listen to?

Image via Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images

I totally agree that one of the best Bob Dylan songs is "Knockin' On Heaven's Door," but "Blowin' In The Wind" and "The Times They Are A-Changin'" are also great songs to listen to if you're a new Bob Dylan fan. So far, "The Times They Are A-Changin'" is my personal favorite song.

His style is the perfect blend of rock and folk that reminds me of summer picnics and walks in the woods. His sound also reportedly inspired Taylor Swift's Folklore!

Like any good comfort show, Sweet Magnolias feels like a warm hug (even if it's a nice spring day — the show is just that good!). Watching this series feels like drinking the perfect glass of iced tea...plus it'll make you appreciate your female friendships even more than you already do. Somehow, it's been almost a year since we saw Maddie, Dana Sue, and Helen, but the good news is that our favorite ladies are back in action because Sweet Magnolias Season 4 is officially filming! Here's everything to know about the new TV show.

Will there be Sweet Magnolias season 4?

Image via Netflix

Yes, we're getting a Sweet Magnolias season 4! The senior season was confirmed in October of 2023 after season 3 dropped in July. I can't wait to see what all our favorite Serenity residents are up to this time around!

When is Sweet Magnolias season 4 coming out?

Image via Netflix

Sweet Magnolias season 4 started filming in February of 2024. Based on the timeline for season 3 (which released a year after it filmed), we could see it in February 2025!

How many episodes are in season 4 of Sweet Magnolias?

Image via Netflix

Considering all three seasons of Sweet Magnolias have ten episodes, it's safe to assume Sweet Magnolias season 4 will have 10 episodes total. But we'll have to see if Netflix drops them all at one time, or if they do a two-part premiere like they're doing with Bridgerton!

Who's in the Sweet Magnolias cast this year?

Image via Netflix

We'll see JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Brooke Elliott, and Heather Headley return as our titular Sweet Magnolias, and I hope we see Logan Allen, Anneliese Judge, Carson Rowland, and Jamie Lynn Spears too!

What is Sweet Magnolias season 4 about?

Image via Netflix

Even though season 3 ended on a high note, showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson promises there will be more drama in the future (which feels true to life — when is there never not drama IRL?).

Sweet Magnolias season 4 will examine "the twists and turns of romance, the complexity of friendship, the surprises that pop up in life," she tells TUDUM, "and how all these things make us more grateful for the people who love us, the people who fight for — and with — us, and the people who can make us laugh, whatever we’re going through.”

“True friendship is a living thing: It has to change and grow as we do," she continues. "And that’s not always easy. But that’s what makes it beautiful.”

Check back here for the latest news on Sweet Magnolias season 4!
