16 New Movies Based On Books To Add To Your Watchlist

it ends with us movies based on books best movies based on novels

Sometimes, watching movies based on books can be a double-edged sword. If you're a tried-and-true fan of the book, and you know the ins and outs of all the characters' motivations, it can feel like you've been shut out of the internal workings of the story. Not to mention the sets and costumes can look totally different! But sometimes filmmakers strike gold, and a book to movie adaptation is exactly what readers everywhere envisioned. Whether you're a "I have to read the book before I see the movie" kind of person, or you can't remember the last time you picked up a novel, these are some movies based on books you won't want to miss! Don't forget about The 15 Best TV Shows Based On Books To Watch In 2024 too ;).

Mother's Instinct

Image via Amazon

This book adaptation stars Jessica Chastain and Anne Hathaway as best friends whose relationship is put to the ultimate test after tragedy. When Céline's (Hathaway) son falls off a balcony and she has to come to terms with her grief, Alice (Chastain) begins noticing Céline's bizarre behavior — and is left questioning her own maternal instincts.

Mother's Instinct will be released in 2024 and in addition to Jessica Chastain and Anne Hathaway, Josh Charles, Baylen D. Bielitz, Anders Danielsen Lie, and Eamon Patrick O'Connell star.

The Princess Diaries 3

Image via Amazon

Considering The Princess Diaries 2 featured Mia at 21 years old, I know that The Princess Diaries 3 will deviate from Meg Cabot's books. I also know that the third installment in the beloved movie series will continue the story the other two movies have already set up. Before Gary Marshall (the movies' director) passed away, he told People that film lead Anne Hathaway and he hoped to set the third movie in New York City. I would love to see that!

The Princess Diaries 3 is currently in pre-production and we're hoping to see Anne Hathaway, Julie Andrews, and Chris Pine return. Hopefully Heather Matarazzo as Lily, too!

It Ends With Us

Image via Amazon

Lily Bloom (played by Blake Lively in the new film) finally moves out of her small town to open a flower shop in Boston. After a memorable evening with Ryle, it feels like life is starting to work itself out. But when Lily comes face-to-face with her first love Atlas, Lily realizes she can't hide from her past anymore.

It Ends With Us will hit theaters June 21, 2024 and stars Blake Lively, Justin Baldoni, Brandon Sklenar, Jenny Slate, and Hasan Minhaj.

Beach Read

Image via Amazon

Rom-com author January Andrews is not happy. Her father has passed and she's currently staying in the old beach house he was sharing with his mistress. To top it all off, she's got the worst case of writer's block, and her panic only spirals when she reconnects with novelist Gus Everett, her academic arch-nemesis from their college days. But the more she gets to know Gus (plus the fact they decide to swap genres to help with their writer's block), the more she starts to see the silver linings in life.

Beach Read is in pre-production, and while we don't have a cast yet, we know that Dollface director Yulin Kuang is writing and directing the movie!

Meet Me At The Lake

Image via Amazon

This movie based on a book follows Fern during two different times in her life: in her early 20s, she spent the most magical 24 hours with a boy named Will. They shared the hopes and dreams they didn't dare tell anyone else, and even though they agreed to meet back up a year later, Fern never saw Will again. That is, until ten years later, when she returns to her mother's lakeside resort after her mother's death and finds him there.

Meet Me At The Lake is currently in pre-production, and while we don't have any casting info, we do know that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are producing this book to movie adaptation!

The Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants 3

Image via Amazon

Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2, which released in 2008, covers multiple books in this series, which makes me think this new movie based on the books will focus on the final installment: Sisterhood Everlasting. The book is all about the five sisters reuniting after ten years — and about the love that connected them from the beginning. Not only would this be a natural next step for the film series, but it would also serve as an emotional and beautiful conclusion!

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 3 is in pre-production, but it sounds like we'll see Blake Lively, Alexis Bledel, America Ferrera, and Amber Tamblyn all return!

The Chronicles of Narnia

Image via Amazon

Following the success of Barbie, Greta Gerwig is back with her take on The Chronicles of Narnia. While I don't have word on *which* of the seven books will be used in the adaptation (although my guess is The Magician's Nephew), I do know that they're all filled with magic, themes of family, and enduring hope.

At the moment, Greta Gerwig's The Chronicles of Narnia project is in pre-production, so while we don't know the cast yet, I'd love to see William Moseley, Anna Popplewell, Skandar Keynes, Georgie Henley, or Ben Barnes from the original films make a cameo!

Book Lovers

Image via Amazon

Nora is a Manhattan literary agent convinced love will never find her, and decides to join her sister on a North Carolina mountain getaway (a getaway, I might add, where she keeps running into prickly book editor Charlie). But the more time Nora spends with Charlie, the more she wants to know — about him and herself.

Book Lovers is currently in pre-production. While we don't have an official casting announcement, I would love to see Joe Keery as Charlie!

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

Image via Amazon

Evelyn Hugo is FINALLY telling her story in this movie based on a book. In an exclusive interview with a promising young journalist, the fictional Hollywood star reveals all the secrets and scandals the world has always wanted to know. Turns out, there's even more to her seven marriages than anyone could have guessed.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo doesn't have a release date or official casting yet, but Jessica Chastain (who's been the fancast for Celia St. James for years), released a statement saying she won't be involved in the film.

Crying in H Mart

Image via Amazon

This memoir follows indie rockstar Michelle Zauner as she chronicles her Korean-American childhood, and her relationship with her mother, from their bond over food to spending time journeying around Korea together. But when her mother passes away, Michelle has to figure out what life looks like without her.

Crying in H Mart is in pre-production, so there's no official casting announcements yet. We do know, however, that White Lotus star Will Sharpe will be directing this book adaptation.

Argylle

Image via Universal Pictures

This book-to-movie adaptation follows introverted spy writer Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard), who gets sucked into the spy world after her fictional books start to reflect the real world a little too much. It's totally giving Kingsman: The Secret Service with a little bit of Nim's Island magic.

Argylle is available on Apple TV+ now and stars Bryce Dallas Howard, Dua Lipa, Henry Cavill, Sam Rockwell, and Samuel L. Jackson. Dua Lipa is also releasing music for the film!

Dune 2

Image via Warner Bros. Entertainment

After Paul (Timothée Chalamet) joins Chani (Zendaya) and the Fremen, he learns more about his destiny, and realizes he has to choose between the love of his life and fate of the universe. Still reeling from the loss of his father, Paul does everything he can to avoid the future he keeps seeing in visions.

Dune 2 is in theaters now and alongside Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya, we'll see Florence Pugh, Austin Butler, Rebecca Ferguson, Dave Bautista, Stellan Skargard, Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem, and Charlotte Rampling.

The Color Purple

Image via Warner Bros. Entertainment

In this brand new adaptation of the Broadway musical, in the face of abuse and racism she endures, Celie (Fantasia Barrino) dreams of reuniting with her sister Nettie in Africa after they're separated as teenagers. Not only is the story emotional and gripping, but the costumes, music, and characters come together to form something truly unforgettable.

The Color Purple is available to stream on Max now. In addition to Fantasia Barrino, the movie stars Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, Colman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, H.E.R., Halle Bailey, and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor.

Red, White & Royal Blue

Image via Prime Video

Rom-com lovers couldn't get enough of this book when it went viral on TikTok — and when the movie based on the romance book hit Prime Video! Taylor Zakhar Perez plays Alex Claremont-Diaz, the son of the POTUS (who's played by icon Uma Thurman), whose relationship with Prince Henry (Nicholas Galitzine) quickly turns from hate to romance.

Red, White, & Royal Blue is available to stream on Prime Video, and stars Taylor Zakhar Perez, Nicholas Galitzine, Uma Thurman.

Sitting In Bars With Cake

Image via Prime Video

Yara Shahidi's Jane is a talented baker who's literally juts trying to make it through her '20s. Her best friend Corinne (Odessa A’zion) convinces Jane to start bringing her delicious cakes into bars — but when Corinne gets a life-changing diagnosis, the women use their year of cake to find joy in the hardest of times.

Sitting in Bars With Cake is on Prime Video now and stars Martha Kelly, Ron Livingston, and Bette Midler alongside Yara Shahidi and Odessa A’zion.

Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret

Image via Lionsgate

Judy Blume's iconic book finally got the film treatment, and it stars Rachel McAdams no less! This book adaptation is all about Margaret, who's doing her best to get through middle school — and all the isolation, confusion, and crushes that come with it — when her family moves from the city into the suburbs.

Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret is available on Starz, and stars Abby Ryder Fortson, Rachel McAdams, Elle Graham, Kathy Bates, and Benny Safdie.

Over time we learn that Tully has abandonment issues and looks for anyone — especially men — to love her. Her journey takes her to the big apple where she achieves all the glitz and glamour that life has to offer.

Kate goes on to become a wife and mother, two things she believes she wants, but it becomes clear that she's missing something. That something is what begins to burn a hole in her being and the more she watches her best friend Tully live a successful life, the more she wants that for herself too.

Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng

Elena Richardson and Mia Warren go to warn in this moving novel about classism. It dares to ask readers who deserves to be seen as a shining example of a mother as both women eventually face how far they're willing to go to protect those they love.

For Elena, Shaker Heights is all she's ever known. She's married, has four children, and is well-loved in her community. She believes that she's been able to achieve everything she has because she knows how to be the woman who doesn't color outside of the lines.

On the other hand, Mia is an artist who knows all about creating masterpieces with elements that are otherwise seen as messy. She and her daughter Pearl become a little too close to the Richardsons, finding their lives dangerously intertwined with them.

When a custody battle ensues that involves the young daughter of Mia co-worker, she finds herself willing to dismantle the pretty facade of not only Shaker Heights, but Elena as well.

Tiny Beautiful Things by Cheryl Strayed

Cheryl Strayed has spent over 10 years dishing out advice as 'Dear Sugar' has touched people with her columns, podcast Dear Sugars, and Substack. Deciding to compile all of the best things she's ever told people, Cheryl Strayed pieced together Tiny Beautiful Things so that readers around the world won't have to look far for her empathetic wisdom.

Georgie, All Along by Kate Clayborn

Georgia Mulcahy is the ultimate people-pleaser and her career is the epitome of it. She'd probably always be that way had it not been for a unexpected career change that sends her packing back home. Begrudgingly, she goes and soon discovers a diary where she once wrote down all of her heart's desires.

This inspires her to start checking things off her life's to-do list so that she can really start living. It's just that Levi Fanning is somehow her unexpected roommate while she's at her parents' home and his offer to help her complete her list feels like something she didn't know she'd encounter.

The more they spend time together, the more Georgie feels like there's more to life than checking off things on a list.

The Mitford Affair by Marie Benedict

The Mitford sisters have always been the talk of the town, but nothing is as shocking as when one of the sisters decides she'd rather devote herself to a fascist leader. Another sister decides it's worth following her and this leads people to whisper salacious things about her alleged relationship with Hitler.

As the war between Great Britain and Germany threaten to spill over, their sister Nancy can't help but wonder what her sisters have gotten themselves into. She'll have to decide where her own allegiance lies.

Expiration Dates by Rebecca Serle

Daphne Bell has always known how long she'll be with a man before moving on to the next one. It's not that she's flighty, but more so that the universe literally tells her what to expect. These little nudges have been in her life for over two decades and it's something she's learned to accept.

However, the universe decides to be cryptic by only clueing her in on the name of the next man she'll spend time with. It's odd because if Jake knew the things she did, there's a chance he could walk away from her forever and that's the last thing Daphne wants.

On a Quiet Street by Seraphina Nova Glass

Brighton Hills appears to be a picturesque place to live. It's a community that beautifully blends luxurious living with the gorgeous nature that surrounds it and the neighbors always have their eyes on each other.

However, Cora's desire to find out if her husband is having an affair leads her to form a partnership with Paige. She's the one neighbor that Cora knows keeps a watchful eye on what's going on in Brighton Hills after her son died.

The two women work together to discover what Cora's husband is really up to, but what they may stumble across will send a shockwave through Brighton Hills.

Throne of the Fallen by Kerri Maniscalo (Kindle)

The Prince of Envy is struggling to save his demon court in Throne of the Fallen, but he's determined to find a way to do so. He's not afraid of the magic and mysterious people that keep crossing his path because nothing can stop his fierce desire to regain the control he once has.

Things are seemingly no different from Miss Camilla Antonius because she's facing blackmail by someone who literally makes her skin crawl. In order to change her fate, she reluctantly joins forces with The Prince of Envy and thus begins their dangerous journey through the Underworld.

It's the one place that may pull them together in more ways than one.

The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy by Megan Bannen (Kindle)

Hart spends most of his time patrolling Tanria, but the loneliness does nothing to keep him company. Things couldn't be any different for Mercy though. She's tasked with making sure things are running properly at Birdsall & Son Undertakers and doesn't have time for anyone's foolery.

Ironically, Hart and Mercy both have taken up writing mysterious letters to strangers who have become their friends. The thing is they're not aware they've been communicating with each other.

It's a classic enemies-to-loves fantasy novel that'll make you smile with glee.

A Cinderella Story isn't just a movie — it's honestly a cultural moment. The costume montage, the spastic colons and synchronized swimming, the rain in this drought... even Gavin Degraw singing over the One Tree Hilltrailer on the DVD stand out! Everything about this film is iconically ingrained in our collective conscious, making Hilary Duff and Chad Michael Murray the Y2k blueprint for many of the "It" pairings we know and love today.

We last left our Princeton royalty preparing for their freshman year of college, dreaming of happily-ever-after — or at least graduation — and that was that! But in this era of reboots, I've often wondered what happened to our OG tortured poets after the credits rolled. Luckily, I'm not the only one! Chad Michael Murray just tee'd up a sequel, and yes that's me you hear squealing right now. Here's everything we know about what's to come for everyone's fave modern fairytale!

Is there a part two to a Cinderella story?

Photo via Warner Bros Entertainment Inc

There's Another Cinderella Story, starring Selena Gomez and Drew Seeley, but that's more so a part of a series of "Cinderella stories" rather than an actual sequel. So far, we haven't gotten a follow-up on our Princeton-bound faves.

Has "A Cinderella Story 2" been announced?

There's been no formal announcement yet, but that doesn't mean all hope is lost. During his press tour for Mother of the Bride, Chad Michael Murray told ETthat he's definitely interested in bringing Austin Ames back. He said that even his daughter told him, "You need to make another one of these, Daddy," after she watched A Cinderella Story for the first time.

His response to the idea? "Here you go, Hil. From me to you, let's do it!" — referring to Hilary Duff, of course! The timing couldn't be better either, given that Hilary just gave birth to her fourth child and could hypothetically be available to film in the coming months...just saying!

Again, there's no official information about this project yet, but with a main piece of the puzzle on board, we're one step closer to my own personal happily-ever-after — a real sequel to A Cinderella Story once and for all.

Amazon's adaptation of Casey McQuiston’s famed Red, White & Royal Blueblew our minds with its perfectly extravagant and messy royal romance. Prince Henry and Alex Claremont-Diaz stole our hearts with their antics, proving that love isn't always as cookie cutter as we think it should be. Not only that, but it was the LGBT film we never knew we needed until it hit the big screen last year.

If you've been missing Prince Henry and Alex, you're in luck because a sequel to Red, White & Royal Blue is officially coming! Here's everything we know about the latest developments!

Is the main cast returning?

Image via Jonathan Prime/Prime Video

I'm happy to share that Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez are returning! I honestly don't think the Red, White & Royal Blue sequel would be the same if they weren't.

However, no other cast information has been released! Hopefully we'll see Uma Thurman and Clifton Collins, Jr. reprise their roles!

What's the sequel going to be about?

Image via Prime Video

As of yet, Variety reports that not much has been confirmed about the sequel's plot or release date. My guess is that there the two lovebirds will have to juggle new responsibilities and mishaps.

What the original plot of "Red, White & Royal Blue?"

Image via Prime Video

The novel centers around the character of Alex Claremont-Diaz, a first son of the United States, and his romantic relationship with Prince Henry, British royalty.

Summer is incomplete without a good pair of shorts that you can pull on for any given occasion – evening strolls, happy hours, farmer’s markets, and the like. But sometimes, the major struggle is finding a shorts style that feels and looks good (chafing is absolutely not the move). Luckily, Abercrombie & Fitch has so many cute shorts that aren’t a literal pain in the butt.

Abercrombie & Fitch is currently having a sale on all of their shorts! Here are the details:

  • Dates: May 10-13
  • Deals: 25% off ALL shorts, plus 15% off everything else (like dresses, jeans, tops, and more)
  • Stackable promo code: ‘AFSHORTS’ for an additional 15% off

We love A&F because of their versatile styles and their very impressive size range. They have a plethora of materials to shop from, including denim, linen, and fleecy lounge shorts. These are our favorite styles for summertime!

Denim Shorts

High Rise Dad Shorts

Dad shorts are an anti-chafing hero – this pair in particular boasts a longer hem than your usual denim shorts. The inseam measures about 5 inches, so you have more coverage! These A&F shorts are made to have a relaxed fit throughout the hips and thighs. We adore this light denim wash, but you can also shop these shorts in 8 other colors.

The High Rise Dad Shorts are shoppable in sizes 23-37 on sale for $52.50 (was $70).

Curve Love High Rise Dad Shorts

You can also shop A&F's dad shorts in the brand's Curve Love silhouette, which is made with an additional 2 inches through the hips and thighs to help eliminate gapping. Trust us, we know the pain of shorts not fitting right, which is why these pieces are so great!

The Curve Love High Rise Dad Shorts are shoppable in sizes 23-37 on sale for $48.75 (was $65).

Mid Rise 10" Loose Shorts

Long bermuda shorts like these seem to be another emerging denim trend for 2024. They look so chic with other summer capsule wardrobe staples like laid-back sandals and basic tank tops! Abercrombie & Fitch knows what's up, and this mid-rise number is perfectly on-trend. The inseam lands around 10 inches, with a loose fit all around the legs. You'll totally appreciate the additional length for comfort reasons!

The Mid Rise 10" Loose Shorts are currently available in sizes 30-33 on sale for $52.50 (was $70).

High Rise Loose Shorts

We truly cannot resist a high waist! While other shorts may fit snug against your figure, these let loose a bit for maximum breathability and comfort. The high rise still compliments your waistline, too. They're crafted from a vintage stretch denim material that moves with you, but still retains a bit of structure.

The High Rise Loose Shorts are shoppable in three other colors and sizes 23-37 on sale for $52.50 (was $70).

High Rise Mom Shorts

Mom shorts will never go out of style, in our opinion. A&F champions this timeless style with a super high-rise waist, 2.5 inch inseam, and a classic cuffed hem. The denim material that swarms these shorts is considerably stretchy, which is a massive perk for tackling the hot summer weather.

The High Rise Mom Shorts are also available in the Curve Love style, which accounts for 2 extra inches in the hips and thighs to fit your curves the right way. This style is available in sizes 23-37 on sale for $48.75 (was $65).

Curve Love High Rise 90s Cutoff Shorts

White shorts are a quintessential vacation piece, and these ones made in a 90's-inspired silhouette just can't be beat. The loose-fitting leg and 3.25-inch inseam allow for freedom of movement, whether you're walking, standing, or sitting down. The waistline fits you in a subtle v-shape, flatting your figure instantly.

The Curve Love High Rise 90s Cutoff Shorts are shoppable in 3 other colors and sizes 23-37 on sale for $48.75 (was $65).

Linen Shorts

Linen-Blend Pull-On Shorts

Linen shorts are so much more fuss-free than denim ones, but they can look just as put-together and elevated. Case in point: these pull-on linen shorts! The elastic high-waist pulls things together (without any buttons, no less!) and makes getting ready a total breeze. The inseam falls at about 3.5 inches, plus this cutie style has pockets!

The Linen-Blend Pull-On Shorts come in 9 other colors and patterns in sizes XXS-XXL on sale now for $37.50 (was $50).

Premium Linen Scallop-Hem Tailored Shorts

These scalloped shorts with an elastic waistband look like the perfect summer uniform, TBH. Their 100% linen construction means otherworldly breathability, especially when it feels like a million degrees out. A&F even sells coordinating linen tops if you want to step out in a matching set.

The Premium Linen Scallop-Hem Tailored Shorts are shoppable in three other trendy colors and sizes 23-37 on sale now for $52.50 (was $70).

Curve Love A&F Sloane Tailored Linen-Blend Shorts

Though these high-rise linen shorts lack some pretty cool scallops like the previous pair, their waistline pleats and sophisticated belt loops are everything. They're giving office chic in the best way possible! The generous 4.5 inch amps up the comfort levels of these shorts with ease, but the details from the cuffed hem to the seamless pockets make them a bit more luxe.

The Curve Love A&F Sloane Tailored Linen-Blend Shorts are shoppable in sizes 23-37 on sale now for $52.50 (was $70).

Lounge Shorts

Vintage Sunday Shorts

The Vintage Sunday Shorts boast a thick, durable fleece material that feels oh-so luxurious – even if you're just wearing them for a session of rotting on the couch. The wide, elastic high-rise waistband is fitted with drawstrings so you can find your perfect fit. These A&F shorts come prepared with two side pockets to hold your phone and/or your fave lip balm!

The Vintage Sunday Shorts come in 7 other fun colors and sizes XXS-XL on sale for $37.50 (was $50).

YPB neoKNIT Unlined Shorts

These short-shorts lean more athletic, but they work just as well for lazy weekends. They're made from a sweat-wicking neoprene material, making for exceptionally light and breathable wear. The curved bottom hem grants you more mobility, too. Plus, there's pockets!

The YPB neoKNIT Unlined Shorts are shoppable in 2 other colors and sizes XXS-XXL on sale for $30 (was $40).
