This Experiential Rom-Com Is A "Choose Your Own Adventure" For Tech-Lovers

experiential rom com mr right

Choose your own adventure books were a staple in the ‘90s, and thanks to writer Diana Snyder Ritter, there’s a new tech-savvy way to recreate that magic. Mr. Right is the new AR rom-com experience that lets you figure out your own Mr. Right in a funny and creative storyline.

"The premise is this girl gets this very attractive human-looking robot and he doesn't have a personality, and your job as the user is to give this guy a personality,” Ritter says. “Originally I had the idea of a girl who gets invited to her ex-boyfriend's wedding, and then schemes to bring this very attractive, human-looking robot as her date.”

Reinventing the RomCom | 5G Filmmaking | Verizon

After pitching the idea to Paul Feig’s Powderkeg Media, Verizon joined the conversation. “They were like, ‘Is there a way to make it interactive and to incorporate some of the 5G lab experiences?’ So then we put our heads together and thought, ‘You know what? Absolutely. This could elevate the project even more.’”

When you play the game, you can tell just how intentional they were in bringing this 5G experience to life. As the main character, each decision you make influences the experience that you have in the game — and the guy you end up with.

The five personality traits are Woke, Talented, Nice Guy, Bro, and Dud, and thanks to all of the different combinations (like Woke-Nice Guy, or Talented-Dud), there are 17 different endings. But the focus of the game isn’t on the guy — it’s on the woman.

“Most things in the interactive space are very sci-fi-based, very male-driven, so that's kind of also something we keyed into in this project,” she says. “[We wanted to] make it very female-based and a rom-com, which is something that really hasn't been done before.”

As self-proclaimed rom-com junkies, we approve!

But you don't have to be a romance fan to enjoy playing Mr. Right — there are so many different details about the game that are fascinating to interact with.

“I think it definitely has married storytelling and gaming,” Ritter says. “You're using augmented reality, you're taking your phone and you can see Sam Asghari, who plays Rob, wherever you are. So you can create pictures that seem very real for all of his social media platforms within the game."

Ritter explains, “We shot it at 5G labs [and] did all just motion capture technology. And then like wherever you are, you have the option to kind of stick him [somewhere] and make these different photos to go on his social media within the game.”

But Mr. Right isn’t just a game either — it’s an experience. Because of the way causality works within the storyline, there are different incentives behind the scenes (which is why if you’re inactive as a player, you get the Dud boyfriend). That means that a friend group can play the same game and wind up with completely different endings.

“One of the things we wanted to do was make it an experience that you wanted to play again and again and again,” Ritter says. “So making people talk about it and then want to play it again to get different endings, that was really one of our goals.”

Mr. Right is an excellent example of the way that technology will continue to influence our art and our storytelling in the future.

“The technology really worked seamlessly to be incorporated into the narrative,” Ritter says. “It feels very smooth [when] one minute you're watching a traditional scene, then you're making a choice, then you're doing a video call, then you're doing text messaging, then you're doing augmented reality. We're really challenging the user to go from one medium to the next within this experience.”

If you're a classic romance girl who craves a little spice — I'm looking at you, Bridgerton fans — then Christina Lauren's The Paradise Problemis everything you need. I thought I was hooked on romantasy books, but I think this book has coaxed me right back over to the more traditional romance side — and I mean who can really have too much of either type of romance anyway, right?

But before I dig into all things The Paradise Problem, it's important to be clear up one thing: Christina Lauren isn't just one author like I initially thought. The two women responsible for bringing the world 30 romance novels are absolute powerhouses who also happen to be best friends: Christina Hobbs and Lauren Billings. I know — this news alone seems like it deserves it's own summer novel. Since they don't have plans to do that, we at least get to have their unified essence in the books they've written and in this lovely interview.

It goes without saying, but The Paradise Problem is the perfect way to celebrate Christina Lauren's successful romance empire. Of their newest title, Christina and Lauren feel great about it being in the world. "This one is really fun so it's like going out and just celebrating. We're not worried," Lauren says with a smile. Confidence; I love it!

Ahead, learn more about how they birthed Christina Lauren and created the characters you'll come to love in The Paradise Problem.

The Making of a Romance Novel Empire

Christina Hobbs and Lauren Billings

I know besties when I see them, and this writing duo has all the makings of two friends whose bond has been deepened by more than time. Still, curiosity get's the best of me when I mention what certainly feels like an empire to me before asking, "How did you two meet?" Their knowing smile says it all — they've clearly been locked in for a while, and they remember the exact moment things clicked for them.

"In 2009 we were both writing fanfiction and reading each other's stories online. Then Lo (Lauren) was putting on a panel at San Diego Comic Con on fanworks and she invited me to be on it. So, I came out and we met for the first time, and we got along really well," says Christina.

From there, they wrote a one shot — quick fanfiction story — together, and eventually decided it was worth taking a chance on writing an entire book. The fact that both Christina and Lauren have experience writing fanfiction not only helped them prepare for their pivot into authorship, but it also got them accustomed to the honesty of online book reviews.

As far as people not knowing that Christina Lauren is actually two people, that's basically the point. "We want it [our books] to feel like they're written by one voice. We spend a lot of time editing to make sure it doesn't sound feel like two very distinct, combative voices in there," Lauren says while excitedly adding, "I mean everyday we get DM's that are like, 'I didn't know there were two of you!'"

Peeling Back the Layers of The Paradise Problem

Warning: May contain some spoilers.

I have a deep appreciation for books that immediately call my imagination to the forefront and that's just one of the many things The Paradise Problem does as soon as you begin reading the first page. We're immediately introduced to Anna Green and "West" going their separate ways after choosing to amicably end their marriage. The kicker? See, they don't actually know each other.

How can two people essentially be strangers while they're married? Realistically, Anna and West's marriage was one of convenience. Each found themselves in a situation where their very survival relied on marriage, so they decided to become husband and wife solely on paper.

That seems pretty straightforward right? Wrong. Based on the first impressions of Anna and West, one has it together while the other is a hot mess. But, Christina Lauren is challenging us to rethink our approach to first impressions because they're not always everything. Once you start peeling back a person's layers, you can really start to understand their choices, reactions, family dynamics (and there are plenty of awkward encounters in this story on that front), and more.

Image via Jasmine Williams

Christina and Lauren knew what they wanted for these two characters in the end, but they had to figure out how to fully thread the needle for it to work — particularly when it came to West and his relationship to his family. They had his backstory, but they needed to figure out how to fully flesh out his world, parents and all. What they went with was jaw-dropping IMO, full of shady behavior, cocky attitudes, and beyond. But how does West's background and personality relate to Anna's?

"We always try to think about who's the perfect person for the characters — not who will complete them. Anna is very different. She does not come from a wealthy background, she's not super polished," says Lauren. But, there's more to her than meets the eye. She's a genuinely good person who has a loving heart that no amount of status can compete with once the layers are peeled back.

This is what begins winning West over, and the two soon begin to find there's some truth to the fictionalized relationship they have on display for West's family. Ultimately, The Paradise Problem begs readers to ask if opposites really do attract, confronting us — and our main characters — with this one scenario at a time.

In my humble opinion, The Paradise Problem feels like one of Christina Lauren's best books because it encompasses all the elements that fans of their work love. Christina says, "They love characters they either want to be or want to be friends with, heroes they want for their own, a lot of the settings..." She continues, saying, "The great thing about having a large catalogue of books is that there's something for everyone. Do you like funny books? We got you. Do you want super saucy books? We got you. Do you want something that's gonna rip your heart out? We got that too."

As a professional astrologer and transformation coach, I've noticed a common thread with people seeking answers by working with astrology in these unstable years. They all come when they're in the most challenging moments, wishing and hoping for a silver lining and wanting to know when it will pass. As we navigate Gemini Season, looking at situations from all sides rather than merely assuming is crucial. Being curious and open-minded is vital in mastering this season. Embracing diversity (hello, Pride Month!) and holding space and understanding for others by communication is the way Gemini rolls. No matter where you are in your journey, confused, uncertain, and just plain stuck…know that astrology can help you fill the gaps while gaining peace and self-awareness. Now, let's look at June's astrological forecast.

This month exhibits a delightful blend of happiness and opportunities. Mercury, the cosmic messenger, starts this month as it enters its home sign, Gemini. It enables us to get the conversations going at a comfortable speed and flow. A new moon in the social butterfly sign, Gemini, sets the scene for us to start anew, involving our ideas and even opening pathways in our love stories. What a great start as summer approaches. Then, Mars, the planet of drive and motivation, enters the stable sign Taurus, allowing us to build a solid foundation aligned with our future ambitions.

For the second half of the month, Venus and Mercury enter the nurturing sign Cancer, inviting us to hold space for conscientious-filled discussions and security in our connections. Things will begin to heat up as Vesta, the asteroid of devotion and keeper of the sacred flame, enters the fire sign Leo. It will reawaken our inner fire while igniting a new phase in our journey involving our devotion. The Sun's journey into maternal Cancer manifests a period of self-care and emotional needs. The full moon in Capricorn heralds a moment for you to analyze the state of your structures while letting go of the outmoded in your life. The month wraps up with the structure-oriented planet Saturn retrograde, which gives you a chance to contemplate the kind of life you have been building. What To Expect In Your June Horoscope For 2024

May was epic with the solar flares...did you see that? It was a month filled with personal revelations regarding our self-worth and integrity moving forward. June will take these notions a notch higher regarding our communication with others and even analyzing our inner dialogues. It will be your chance to act on your goals (mid-year reset, anyone?) and witness the changes as you continue to master your thoughts. The cosmos begins its dance on Monday, June 3, when Mercury, the planet of communication and ideas, enters its dignity sign, Gemini. This period extends clarity and speed in our dialogue. While airy Gemini can spiral out in different directions, Mercury thrives in this sign, as it will help us feel more open and receptive to ideas from various sources. The more curious and unbiased you are, the better.

The new moon in expressive Gemini on Thursday, June 6, provides a perfect opportunity to socialize and attend events. As Venus is in exact alignment with the new moon, it can lead to experiences filled with love, laughter, and joy. It will be a fun night to remember. Book an outing with your friends or arrange a solo date—this cosmic event will be serendipitous. That weekend, Mars, the planet of motivation, enters the earthy sign Taurus on Sunday, June 9. This planetary ingress will slow things down at a comfortable pace. Ensuring you observe before diving headfirst into things that you may regret later. You will feel more at peace. For those who are impatient (guilty), get that yoga mat out or take long nature walks to work off that built-up steam.

Venus, the love planet, and Mercury enter Cancer on Monday, June 17, shifting our focus to deepen our connections with others while holding heart-to-heart conversations. These two power planets merging on the same day will ignite a breakthrough in your perception of love and values. Expressing your vulnerability will help you see where you stand in your relationship(s). The truth will set you free. Expect your heart to sing as Vesta, the asteroid of self-devotion and commitment, enters the sign Leo on Wednesday, June 19. This transit will ignite a stirring in your core, giving you the courage to step up and claim your happiness. The fire inside will burn stronger as you remain invested in your passion and grit. Allow yourself to take center stage and share your gifts. The world is waiting.

Waterworks Cancer season begins on Thursday, June 20, with the Sun moving into the sign of the crab. This cosmic event heralds the beginning of summer, and we begin to embody warmth, compassion, nurturing, and emotional sensitivity. Hosting potlucks or social outings can be a great way to commemorate your Cancer friends. Focus on building solid, authentic connections. We deserve to rebuild after the eclipse season back in April.

The full moon in Capricorn on Friday, June 21, will bestow us the ability to analyze the state of our structures. Many will realize what needs to be done to rebuild solidity after what has not been fully cultivated. This period can be a bit of a "Debbie Downer," with Saturn in intense opposition to Juno, the asteroid of marriage and committed partners. If you are in a relationship, you will understand what needs to improve or be at peace by cutting your losses and moving on.

Speaking of Saturn, this month concludes with it entering its retrograde phase on Saturday, June 29. Contemplate what kind of life you are building these next several months. Your awareness of karma will heighten, and becoming aligned with integrity and humility will alchemize. A review of your priorities and commitments will inevitably line up.

Following in the footsteps of movie musicals like Mean Girls, Wicked might just be the 2024 movie we're most excited for. The fantastical design, beautiful songs, and enemies-turned-besties relationship between Elphaba and Glinda come together like magic. The show first opened on Broadway in 2003 with Idina Menzel as Elphaba and Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda. Stephen Schwartz, lyricist and composer, has teased the film since 2017, and every little bit of new news gets us more excited to finally travel to Oz on the big screen. Keep reading for everything we know about the gravity-defying fall movie!

Wicked - Official Trailer

If you didn't already believe that Wicked was going to be the musical movie event of the century, this trailer will convince you. The dancing! The costumes! The literal magic! I am going to be weeping the entire time (and I need to start working on my Halloween costume STAT!)

Check Out The New Wicked Poster

Image via Universal Pictures

The newest Wicked poster shows off Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo as Glinda and Elphaba like we've never seen! As a Glinda girl myself, I love to see all the details on Ariana's costume, plus all the texture and intricacies on Cynthia's. The poster is totally giving "The Creation of Adam" painting with Glinda and Elphaba just out of reach of one another — and it also reminds of "Defying Gravity" since Elphaba is in the air!

Who else is in the Wicked movie cast?

Image via Sophy Holland/Universal Pictures/Vanity Fair

We got a first (leaked) look at Bridgerton star Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero the week of May 13. We already know that he can sing so we're extra excited to see him in action alongside Ariana and Cynthia!

In this Vanity Fair first look, we see the three actors are joined by a powerhouse cast including Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard and Everything Everywhere All At Once star (and Academy Award winner!!) Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible. The cast also features Broadway actor Ethan Slater as Boq, Marissa Bode as Nessarose, SNL star Bowen Yang as Pfannee, and The Greatest Showman actress Keala Settle as Miss Coddle.

We might have gotten a first glimpse at the movie during CinemaCon 2023, but this year's convention finally revealed the one cast member we've been waiting for: Dr. Dillamond, who will be played by Peter Dinklage.

"The wicked movie now has an academy award winner, grammy winner, tony winner and an oliver award winner," says @sheeshgwws on X. "i mean the talent is stacked."

Who auditioned for the Wicked movie?

Images via Kevin Winter/Frazer Harrison/Amy Sussman/Getty Images

Before we got the official Wicked cast list, it turns out that a lot of our favorite stars went out for the film! When the movie was in its earliest stages of pre-production, back in 2014, Lea Michele and Harry Styles were reportedly the frontrunners for Elphaba and Fiyero (via The Guardian).

And once Jon M. Chu was attached to direct and the film really took off, a lot of stars we know and love made it into the audition room. Reneé Rapp told Watch What Happens Live that she auditioned for Glinda, while Dove Cameron confirmed she also auditioned for the role, via The Wrap. Amanda Seyfried was also in the running for the Good Witch, and revealed she auditioned (via Cosmopolitan) when she was playing Elizabeth Holmes in The Dropout.

But the most surprising bit of news to me is that Joe Jonas and Nick Jonas went out for the same role! Nick confirmed to Variety that both brothers auditioned for Fiyero.

Considering in the mid-2010s One Direction was at the top of their game, Mamma Mia star Amanda Seyfried proved her singing chops again in Les Misérables, and we all had major crushes on the Jonas Brothers (still do, TBH), this cast would have overwhelmed every Tumblr musical theater girlie in the very best way.

Who is Jonathan Bailey playing in Wicked?

Image via Sophy Holland/Universal Pictures/Vanity Fair

Jonathan Bailey from Bridgerton is starring as playboy-turned-lover boy Fiyero. When he first meets Glinda and Elphaba, he's taken with Glinda's charm and popularity, but he quickly realizes there's much more to Elphaba than meets the eye. In this Vanity Fair first look, we see that just like Anthony Bridgerton, Fiyero has an affinity for vests, billowy shirts, and horses. I'm not mad about it.

Why was Ariana Grande at the Oscars 2024?

Image via Rodin Eckenroth/Mike Coppola/Getty Images

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo presented the award for "Best Score" and "Best Original Song" at the Oscars 2024! The duo showed up ahead of the Wicked movie (which hits theaters this fall), wearing their best Oz-approved fashion. Ariana Grande wore a voluminous bubblegum pink gown from Giambattista Valli Haute Couture that was reminiscent of Glinda the Good Witch, while Cynthia Erivo channeled Elphaba in a leather green Louis Vuitton dress.

While the aesthetic and fabric of both dresses were very different (similar to their Wicked characters!) both Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo looked stunning and otherworldly thanks to the artistic silhouettes. I am simply in love with Ariana's off-the-shoulder bubble cape, and Cynthia's ruffled sleeves. I can't wait to see the rest of their press looks!

What is the Wicked movie about?

Image via Universal Pictures

Wicked is an origin story for the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good from The Wizard of Oz. As young women, Elphaba and Glinda uncover the wizard's plot to suppress all of the animals in Oz and keep his power. When Elphaba tries to expose him, he frames her for the act. Wicked will be directed by Jon M. Chu, who also directed 2021's In The Heights. We loved his work on that blockbuster musical, so we can't wait to see what Chu brings to the big screen with Wicked this time!

What is the Wicked movie release date?

Image via Universal Pictures

Wicked: Part I hits theaters the week of Thanksgiving on November 27, 2024. It was originally scheduled for a Christmas release but the sooner, the better IMO!

Who will play Elphaba in the wicked movie?

Image via Cynthia Erivo/Instagram

Elphaba will be played by Broadway star Cynthia Erivo. She starred in a revival of The Color Purplefrom 2015 to 2017, winning a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her performance. She also took to the screen in films like Harriet, Pinocchio, and Bad Times at the El Royale. Cynthia Erivo first teased her Wicked look in an Instagram post, and we can't wait to see more!

Who is playing Glinda?

Image via Ariana Grande/Instagram

Popstar and actress Ariana Grande will play Glinda in the films. We're very excited about this, especially after she sang "The Wizard And I" at the 2018 Wicked 15th Anniversary Special. Ariana may be a global pop sensation, but she has strong roots in musical theatre, starring as Charlotte in 13 the Musical in 2008. She's also been asking the Wicked team about a movie for over ten years!

“Since I was 20, I was like, ‘Hey, I don't know when this is happening, but when it's happening, may I please at least just audition?’" Ariana Grande tells Amazon Music's Zach Sang. "That's all I wanted, was an audition. I've never wanted anything more.”

Ariana prepped for the audition with “voice lessons every day, acting lessons every day” for six whole months. “I trained every single day to prove to [Wicked producers] that I could handle taking on this other person," she says.

Why is the Wicked movie two parts?

Image via Universal Pictures

Wicked will be split into two parts, just like the Broadway show. That way, the stakes will feel higher, and we'll have more time with the characters! The two-part release follows in the footsteps of blockbusters like The Hunger Games and Dune. Wicked: Part I will premiere in November 2024, and the second part will follow the next year.

Why is Wicked coming out in 2024?

Image via Universal Pictures

The Wicked movie was originally supposed to premiere in 2021 but because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the film got pushed. Thankfully, the strikes during the summer of 2023 didn't delay the movie at all!

Dearest gentle readers, we're less than a day away from seeing gorgeous co-stars Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton grace our screens in Bridgerton Season 3. Is it obvious we've been yearning for their onscreen chemistry? We can't help it — "Polin" simply beckons!

If you've been enjoying seeing them on the red carpet and can't believe how well they work together, there's a reason for that — an amazing friendship! As gorgeous as these two are together, Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton are pretty much besties IRL. You know we love talking about good friendships (here's looking at you Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez), so it's only right we honor two of our favorite Bridgerton co-stars.

Here's three super sweet reasons why they're friendship goals!

Three Sweet Reasons Why Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton Are Friendship Goals

They're dance partners.

No, this isn't a joke. Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton have been dance partners for — hold your breath — five years. Nicola first revealed this fun fact about their friendship during an interview with E! News.

As she shared why she and Luke were able to film the steamy scenes we'll be watching soon, she said, "We've actually been dance partners for five years. So we had a certain physical comfort level with each other which helps immensely."

Luke added, "You'd think filming a scene like that with someone...who has been your friend for like four years, would be a daunting experience, but actually it was a reassuring one."

Whew, I think I may need to check my temperature because those are still very hot answers 😮💨.

Support is at the center of their friendship.

These two know that being supportive is essential for most friendships to thrive, and they're certainly fond of being there for one another. Nicola shared a cute pic of the two last year on Instagram where she'd arrived to support Luke Newton during his run in The Shape of Things in London.

She captioned their candid picture, "Smashing it up on the London stage and I’m so proud, you’re the best @lukenewtonuk."

Similarily, Luke showed his support for Nicola when he wore a shirt by the nonprofit organization Choose Love. Nicole shared the sweet pic on Instagram and wrote , "I know you’ve been waiting and the latest @chooselovemodel is here
Thank you Luke for being the best and supporting this incredible charity who are supporting refugees in great need the world over."

They don't mind showing friendly PDA.

Does friendly PDA exist? Sure! Think about the last time you hugged your bestie without involving any romantic feelings? The same applies to Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton. If you ask me, it seems like they're having fun during the press run for the third season of Bridgerton, but can you blame them?

Polin — the cute nickname Bridgerton fans have for Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton— are way too cute to ignore. But, any theories you may have that they're secretly dating will have to be put on hold.

As of now, People reports they'e just friends and nothing more. Nicola even told Extra how she and Luke feel about the rumors. "We think it's really sweet ... because we truly love each other."

We know this doesn't mean you'll stop dreaming about Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton being Hollywood's next 'It' couple, so we won't stop you. Just know that their friendship is equally beautiful and deserves to be respected!
