This Is How Much Exercise It ACTUALLY Takes to Make Up for Sitting All Day

Whether you work at a desk or are a Netflix binge-watching fanatic (no judgement here, natch), sitting all day isn’t exactly the best thing for your bod. We all know that a good stretch at your desk will help prevent stiffness and that you’re supposed to get up and move your butt around every half hour or so, but when you’re five episodes into your Gilmore Girls re-watch (or are just watching the new Gilmore Girls trailer over and over again), it can be easy to forget to take the occasional walk. In order to avoid any nasty side-effects of long spans of sitting, though, you’ll be thrilled to know that the exercise needed is totally doable.

Ulf Ekelund, of the Norwegian School of Sports Science and the University of Cambridge, assures us that this “message is a positive one.” Why’s that? Because it’s totally manageable. “It is possible to reduce, or even eliminate [risks of health problems like heart attacks, kidney diseases, chronic diseases and colorectal cancer] if we are active enough, even without having to take up sports or go to the gym.”

Not that we don’t love sports or heading to the gym, but since we don’t always have time to jump into a pick-up game or the energy to run miles on the treadmill, this is definitely good news.

So what will it take? Just an hour of moderate activity per day will do the trick. That’s right, go for a brisk walk, take a bike ride around your neighborhood or bring together a baseball game with your besties to get your bod back on track. Piece of cake!

If you've searching for how to cook zoodles, then you've come to the right place. We love giving any veggie-substitute a try, and this noodle-alternative is definitely worth adding to your next meal.

You're probably thinking: "WTF am I supposed to with a 'zoodle'?" But fear not — we're here to help! Zoodles (AKA zucchini noodles) are *actually* quite easy to make. You can sauté them on the stovetop, boil them like traditional pasta or simmering them straight in some sauce. In fact, cooking them is so easy that we have a hunch that these zoodle recipes will be your new go-to for anytime you want to some extra greens.

Prepare your zoodles fresh with these tips, or pick some prepackaged ones up from your local grocery store and skip straight to the recipes!

How To Prepare Zoodles

Cut Your Zucchini Noodles The Right Way

To make zoodles, cut both ends off of the zucchini. Slice the zucchini into two halves. From there, use a tool like the Kitchenaid spiralizer attachment that screws onto your stand mixer or a free-standing tool like the one from OXO, or an Inspiralizer to unspool fine or extra fine zucchini ribbons from the core of the zucchini.

In a pinch, you could try using a vegetable peeler to peel long planks off the zucchini and then slice them into noodles. Or, cut the planks using a chef's knife and then further slice them into matchsticks. Once you've processed the zucchini into zoodles, store them in the refrigerator where they taste best within three days.

While zoodles can be eaten raw and dressed up in pesto or another salad dressing, if you want to cook them, these are the three methods to try.

How To Cook Sautéed Zoodles

Heat a skillet over medium heat. Add two teaspoons of oil (olive or coconut) or a pat of unsalted butter. Toss in the zoodles (spiralized from one zucchini), salt to taste, and sauté for several minutes, turning with tongs until the color of the zoodles deepens and they become soft.

Serving Suggestion: After oil is heated, stir in thinly sliced garlic or minced fresh ginger to sizzle and scent the oil. This would be the time to also add a dash of spice like a curry powder, if you like. Once zoodles are cooked, garnish with a scattering of toasted coconut, shredded fresh cilantro and/or mint leaves, and chopped scallions. Pair it with fish.

Figuring out how to buy gifts for new moms that they actually like — and need — can feel hard. Should you go with the generic postpartum gifts or knock it out the park with something extravagant? These are extremely valid questions that will have different answers based on who you ask. But, the main person you should keep in mind is the mom you want to surprise. After all, entering motherhood for the first time can bring on a lot of emotions — just ask Ylleya Fields, mother of 6 and author of children’s book series, Princess Cupcake Jones.

"The first couple of years [of motherhood] are not your own, especially when you have multiple children," Ylleya said. She also mentioned that postpartum depression is such a real thing that's not always fully understood until someone experiences it. Even if new moms don't experience it, she said, "Anyone can feel inadequate or have moments of sadness while going through it." It's something she felt with every child, but Ylleya and I both agree that these moments are temporary.

That being said, she believes it's important for moms to receive gifts that will help them with their babies and self-care. Whether you're gifting a food delivery subscription or making sure baby can safely practice independent play, here are top 37 essential gifts for new moms!

Gifts For New Expecting Moms

It also targets discoloration and premature aging of the skin, making it one of the perfect gifts for expecting moms.

ESARORA Ice Roller

Sometimes a puffy face during pregnancy is inevitable. It can be a little jarring for an expecting mom who's not used to it, so I recommend using an ice roller to help with any puffiness she may experience.

"I used a Baby Bjorn pregnancy pillow during my pregnancies and feel like this is hands-down one of the most important gifts to give," Ylleya said.

Recovering from giving birth can get messy whether you've had a vaginal delivery or a C-section. One of the things that helped me tremendously during postpartum was investing in comfortable underwear things healed down there.

Dreamland Baby Weighted Sleep Sack

Weighted sleep sacks are a dream according to some moms I've talked to. It helps keep the baby safely in place while promoting a peaceful rest.

MAM Feed & Soothe Bottle & Pacifier Gift Set For Ages 0-6 Months

Whether a mom plans to breastfeed or not, having bottles nearby can be a big help for her. One of the brands that worked for my son was MAM because they have an anti-colic design that reduces the chance of newborns developing colic. The nipples on the bottles also have an anti-slip feature that ensures baby's milk will stay in their mouth instead of spilling down their chins.

As a bonus, this gift set features two pacifiers for mom to keep handy in case she decides she wants to give one to her baby.

HONEST Diaper Cake - Pandas, Deluxe

I'm going to be candid — newborns go through a ton of diapers. This diaper cake by HONEST will be a blessing to a new mom for at least a month.

Hatch Rest 2nd Gen

Speaking of restful sleep, this dream machine is — wait for it — a dream for new moms. It helps baby get used to resting at night with soothing sounds that lull them to sleep.

Nanit Baby Monitor with Camera

Ylleya said, "I'm one of those moms who still has a baby monitor, especially for my younger kids. I like to see what's going on." To help ease any fears a new mom may have about letting their babies sleep in nurseries, bring this baby monitor with you if you plan on visiting after she's given birth.

Pottery Barn Paxton Swivel Glider & Recliner

Recliners are essential for a new mom who will likely be up for late-night or early morning feedings. I spent countless hours in a rocking chair during the first few weeks after giving birth. It probably explains why my toddler prefers to be rocked to sleep now!

Peg Perego Ypsi Stroller

Gifts for expecting moms should benefit them as well as their little one like this Peg Perego stroller. It's designed to be easier to maneuver and collapse when not in use — two very important things that'll decrease a mom's stress! Also, the 360 degree wheels will help mom turn tight corners or simply walk through the grocery store without having to worry about the wheels locking while she's trying to pick up items.

While you're at it, be sure to gift her Peg Perego's compatible baseless infant carseat!

For the new moms who may be taking notes to share with their loved ones, Ylleya wants you to remember a few things. She said, "Don’t be hard on yourself if you're experiencing different emotions during postpartum. If you can, ask people to support you mentally or physically as you make the transition from being pregnant to caring for a child for the first time."

By far, one of my favorite things she said during our conversation is, "Being a parent is a learn-as-you-go process. Even with being a mom of 6, I'm still learning and that's okay. You just have to trust yourself and the process."

Taylor Swift has undoubtedly made an impact in many areas of my life, but the food and bev scene is one I'd never thought would get a total Swiftie makeover. After this summer's Eras tour shenanigans, I started to see tons of Taylor-inspired foodie tidbits pop up. Fans revived her iconic chai cookie recipe (extreme yum, BTW), her Milk Bar birthday cake went viral, and reporters began meticulously tracking down her most-visited restaurants.

In the vein of shaking it off up, I present 18 gorgeous Taylor Swift cocktails that draw inspiration from her music and her favorite bar orders. Prepare to be enchanted by some Taylor Swift cocktails that are perfect for your The Tortured Poets Department listening party!

Speak Now Spritz

Speak Now (Taylor's Version) calls for a festive themed sip, and the glitter in this cocktail make it all the more enchanting. (via @thespritzeffect for Brit + Co)

French Blonde

The French Blonde was Taylor's "drink of choice" in a recent night out with some girlfriends and wives of Kansas City Chiefs players. This underrated cocktail features floral and botanical notes with a nice hint of sweetness. To make it, shake 1 oz Bombay Sapphire Gin, 0.75 oz St. Germain, 0.5 oz Lillet Blanc, 1.5 oz fresh strained grapefruit juice, and 1 dash lemon bitters over ice, then strain into a coupe glass and garnish with a grapefruit twist! (via Rye Leawood in Kansas City)

Lavender Haze French Blonde

For a French Blonde with more of a "Lavender Haze" twist, this floral, citrus-y recipe will be your go-to. To make it (serves 2), shake 2 oz purple gin, 2 oz St-Germain elderflower liqueur, 2 oz Lillet Blanc, 4 oz Natalie's Grapefruit Juice, and 4 dashes lemon bitters over ice. Then, strain equally into two glasses and garnish with a lemon wedge and edible glitter! (via Natalie's Orchid Island Juice Company)

The Tortured Tequila Department

The mysterious color of this Taylor Swift cocktail taps into the melancholy energy of her upcoming album, The Tortured Poets Department. The dark red is actually from beets, which provide each sip with a nuanced flavor, and it's sooo good! To make it, combine 2 oz Mi Campo Blanco, 1 ½ oz fresh beet juice, ½ oz triple sec, ¾ oz fresh squeezed lime, and ¾ oz agave nectar in a shaker and shake over ice. Strain into an iced glass and garnish with lime before taking a swig. (via Mi Campo Tequila)

Love and Poetry Noche Electrica

This cocktail commemorates TTPD with a kick of caffeine – perfect for keeping you and your gals awake during your album listening party on release night. Rock your best red lip to go along with it! To make these Taylor Swift cocktails, shake 1 ½ oz Cuervo Tradicional® Cristalino Tequila, ½ oz coffee liqueur, ¼ oz simple syrup, and 3 oz cold brew or espresso over ice. Strain into a Collins glass and garnish with a small red pepper! (via Cuervo)

Pink Dream

This sweet-yet-tart refreshment celebrates the Lover era with such easy ingredients. To make it, combine 1.5 oz Warner's Rhubarb Gin, .5 oz lime juice, .25 oz ginger liqueur, and 1.5 oz cranberry juice in a glass with some ice. Diet Coke & Vodka

Tay confessed to her favorite mixed drink when she was featured in Vogue's questions series back in 2016: a diet coke & vodka. We love a simple cocktail recipe, and we will be channeling her 7-years-ago self with this combo.

Rhubarb & Juliet

Once you take a sip of this Taylor Swift cocktail, it's sure to be a "Love Story." The name of this drink references the song's lyrics, but the rose and rhubarb notes are what really speak to its sweetness.

To make it, add 1.5 oz Warner's Rhubarb Gin and 6oz Fentiman's Rose Lemonade to a glass with ice, then garnish with a whole strawberry to transport yourself to a balcony in summer air. (via Warner's Distillery)

Cosmopolitan

Miss Swift single-handedly brought back the Cosmopolitan earlier this year after she was spotted sipping down a few on a dinner date with Zoë Kravitz. 👀 You can make her made-famous drink order at home with some high-quality vodka, orange liqueur, lime juice, cranberry juice, and a sweetener of your choice. (via Mixop)

Coffee At Midnight

This tequila-based Taylor Swift cocktail references "You Are In Love" from 1989 (Taylor's Version) in the tastiest, most caffeinated way. Similar to an espresso martini, you'll need some espresso liqueur to shake it off – I mean, up.

Stir 1 oz Casa Azul Organic Reposado, 1 oz bourbon, 1 oz espresso liqueur, and 2 dashes of Xocolatl Mole Bitters over ice before straining the mixture into a coupe glass and garnishing with chocolate shavings. (via Casa Azul Tequila)

Getaway (Side)car

A typical Sidecar cocktail combines cognac, cointreau, and fresh lemon juice for a super simple yet effective sipper. Garnish your drink with sugar and a lemon twist to complete this total shotgun shot to the heart. (via Culinary Hill)

Taylorita

This sipper is sour at first, but sweet at the finish. Just like Tay's unexpected album announcements and performances, this tequila-based drink will keep you on your toes. To make it, muddle a handful of kumquats and a couple jalapeño slices in the bottom of a shaker with a squeeze of lime. Next, add 0.5 oz agave nectar, 1 oz orange liqueur, and 2 oz Mi Campo Reposado. Shake it all together, then strain into a salt-rimmed glass with ice. Finish with a splash of soda water, and get ready for some serious yum. (viaMi Campo Tequila)

Blonde Americana Cantarito

This bubbly, fruity drink features classic flavors that never go out of style, so it's the perfect sip to enjoy year-round! To make it, rim a highball glass with Tajín. Stir 2 oz Cuervo Tradicional® Reposado Tequila, 1 oz orange juice, ¾ oz grapefruit juice, and ¾ oz lime juice with ice. Top it all off with a nice splash of grapefruit soda or even some bubbly. Either way, there's won't be any "Champagne Problems" with this drink! (via Cuervo)

Old Fashioned

Explicitly mentioned in "Getaway Car," the Old Fashioned is a classic cocktail that can't be beat. It's made with whiskey to pack a real punch – nothin' good starts with this glass! (via Culinary Hill)

Red Lemon Drop

To drink to Red (Taylor's Version), sip on this Lemon Drop! It's made with 1.5 oz Warner's Raspberry Gin, .75 oz lemon juice, and .25 oz simple syrup. Shake it well and double-strain the drink into a coupe glass with ice. Garnish with a sprig of mint, and you'll be loving this cocktail all too well. (via Warner's Distillery)

A Toast To My Real Friends

An alcoholic homage to "This is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things," this Taylor Swift cocktail features some real bold flavors. To make it, stir 2 oz Casa Azul Organic Blanco, .75 oz Fino Sherry, 2 dashes Xocolatl Mole Bitters, and 2 dashes black walnut bitters over ice, then strain into a lowball glass over a large ice cube. Garnish it with a Luxardo cherry and an orange twist! (via Casa Azul Tequila)

Sweet Tea Prosecco Cocktail

Drink your sweet tea in the summer from Swift's track, "seven" alongside some Prosecco to really immerse yourself in the world of folklore. (via Vanilla and Bean)

Soho Drinking In The Afternoon

Even if you don't have your own "London Boy," this fruity drink will draw out your best American smile. 😉 To make it, shake 2 oz Casa Azul Organic Blanco, 1.5 oz hibiscus tea, 1 oz lime juice, .75 oz agave nectar, and a bar spoon of rosewater over ice. Strain into a rocks glass, then garnish with edible flowers and a lime slice! (via Casa Azul Tequila)
