Brit + Co’s Weekly Entertainment Planner: Winter TV Kickoff, ‘Grace and Frankie,’ and More!

Welcome to Brit + Co’s Weekly Entertainment Planner! Each Monday, we highlight one thing we’re excited about in six categories — movies, TV, music, streaming services, podcasts, and a bonus pick from all of the above — to help you navigate your week in watching and listening. Check out our picks for the week of January 14 to 20 below. Your eyes and your ears will thank us!

Movies

Glass (January 18): M. Night Shyamalan’s latest film is a sequel to 2000’s Unbreakable and 2016’s Split, and it looks every bit as strange and unpredictable as we’ve come to expect from the director. Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson reprise their roles as David Dunn and Elijah Price from Unbreakable, while James McAvoy and Anya Taylor-Joy join as Kevin Wendell Crumb and Casey Cooke from Split. This time around, Jackson’s character — AKA Mr. Glass — emerges as a shadowy orchestrator holding secrets over David’s and Kevin’s heads. (Photo via Universal Pictures)

TV

Midseason/Winter TV Kickoff: The winter TV season kicks off in earnest this week, and there are too many returning favorites and excellent-looking new shows premiering to pick just one. So, in the interest of spreading the love, we’re sharing a handful of TV shows we think you’ll love this week. If you’re looking for a brand-new series, check out To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before‘s Lana Condor in the Deadly Class premiere (Syfy, January 16); Roswell, New Mexico (The CW, January 15); and/or The Passage (Fox, January 14). But don’t forget about the return of This Is Us season 3 (NBC, January 15), Grey’s Anatomy season 15 (ABC, January 17), and A Million Little Things(ABC, on its new day, January 17). (Photo via Eliza Morse/Fox)

Streaming

Grace and Frankie, Season 5 (January 18): Grace and Frankie’s lives are anything but calm in season 5. After leaving their assisted living community at the end of season 4, the women must now attempt to keep their beloved beach house, which has been sold. The women are definitely up for the fight, though, with Frankie telling her concerned children in the first trailer, “I’m acting like a grown woman who is finally living by her own rules.” (Photo via Netflix)

Podcasts

The Purrcast: Yes, this is a podcast about cats. Hosts Sara Iyer and Steven Ray Morris share stories about rescuing cats, rehabilitating cats, and simply living loving lives with their furry friends. The show is now part of the Exactly Right podcast network, which is the new venture from My Favorite Murder hosts Georgia Hardstark and Karen Kilgariff. Listen here, or subscribe wherever you get your cat content podcasts online.

Music

The Weeknd and Gesaffelstein, “Lost In Fire”: The Weeknd is hyping up his next album, as of now seemingly called Chapter 6, and has released a new song with French producer and previous collaborator Gesaffelstein. The song is already turning some heads, with one line — “And I just want a baby with the right one, ’cause I would never be the one to hide one” — sparking rumors that the Toronto singer is referring to his longtime friend and collaborator Drake. Either way, the song is a catchy and moody winter track that you can check out here. (Photo via Phil Walter/Getty Images)

Bonus

Carmen Sandiego (January 18):Jane the Virgin star Gina Rodriguez voices world-renowned criminal Carmen Sandiego in this animated reboot of the ’90s kids’ game show. The new series arrives as a two-part, 20-episode show that is said to delve into Carmen’s mysterious past, as well as her current heist artist life. Rodriguez is also set to star in a Netflix live-action Carmen Sandiego later in 2019. (Photo via Netflix)

There's nothing like finding a female empowerment anthem to put us in a good mood, and to help us feel like we can do anything. Not only does music affect our emotions, but we love that it's something that you can play when you're working, when you're prepping our Bridgerton Sunday brunch recipes, or when you need background noise during a spring cleaning session.

In honor of Women's History Month, we wanted to highlight some of the artists that we love, so we created an empowering playlist featuring 56 girl power anthems to listen to all day, every day.

Our criteria for adding songs to this playlist was fairly simple: they feature lyrics emphasizing confidence, independence, and ambition, and they make us feel empowered whenever we listen. Womanhood is a complicated and complex thing, and with songs that span decades, generations, and genres, this playlist starts to scratch at the surface of empowered female experiences. Following in the footsteps of Spider-Man: No Way Home and Dr. Strange: Multiverse of Madness, *everyone* is talking about the cast for Deadpool 3 (officially named Deadpool & Wolverine). Rumors have been circulating for quite awhile about names like Channing Tatum, Elizabeth Olsen, and Taron Egerton making cameos, but there's one potential casting that has Twitter going crazy: Taylor Swift.

The singer-songwriter already has films like Valentine's Day and Cats under her belt (as well as her feature film directorial debut on the horizon), and thanks to Harry Styles' role in the MCU's The Eternals, the popstar to superhero pipeline is something we know *all too well.* Here's everything we know about Deadpool 3 — and Taylor's potential new role.

Is Taylor Swift going to play Dazzler in Deadpool 3?

Image via Kevin Winter/Getty Images for dcp

The rumor that Taylor Swift will play Dazzler (which has been on the internet since Taylor tooka picture with the cast and crew of 2016's X-Men: Apocalypse) gained traction after a video from The DisInsider. The mutant, a singer who can turn sound into light, has been one of MCU boss Kevin Feige's favorites for a long time.

"Many years ago I asked Kevin Feige if he were to ever direct his own Marvel movie, which character would he want to focus on," Fandago's Eric Davis tweeted. "He said Dazzler. He’s a big fan."

In addition to manipulating sound and light, Dazzler (whose real name, Alison, also happens to be Taylor's middle name) can also create holograms. "The louder the source, the more powerful the output," says Marvel's official site. "She can also shoot bursts of light out of her fingers, hands, eyes, and other parts."

Not only would the character's popstar similarities make sense, but Taylor is also good friends with Ryan Reynolds and his wife Blake Lively. Their kids have been included in Taylor's music (like the intro to reputation's "Gorgeous" and the names of folklore's fictional characters). Ryan lent Taylor his Deadpool suit for Halloween and both the Deadpool 3 announcement and All Too Well: The Short Film were filmed in Ryan and Blake's house.

On February 16, the official Australian Marvel Entertainment account posted a photo of some Deadpool and Wolverine friendship bracelets, in addition to a rainbow bracelet confirming the July 25 release date. "Besties," the caption reads. Considering Taylor Swift's Eras Tour has become known for friendship bracelets, and she's been in Australia this month, all signs point to a potential cameo!!

“There are a lot of surprises,” Deadpool 3 actor Karan Soni tells Variety. “Let’s just say a lot of people traveled to London.” While some sources are confirming Taylor's casting and others are denying, some dazzlingfan art will have to tide us over until we get official word!

What is Deadpool 3 about?

Image via Marvel Studios/Disney

Ryan Reynolds announced the film with a hilarious Instagram post on September 27, 2022. "[Deadpool's] first appearance in the MCU obviously needs to feel special," he says in the video. "We need to stay true to the character." He goes on to joke that despite all his brainstorming, he has no ideas for the film — except bringing back Hugh Jackman as Wolverine.

"Hey Hugh," Ryan says as Hugh crosses the background of the video. "You want to play Wolverine one more time?"

"Yeah, sure Ryan," Hugh responds.

The announcement immediately went trending on social media (Ryan's original post has 3.8 likes), and while we don't have many official plot details, we do know that time travel will play a role.

Is there a Wolverine variant in Deadpool and Wolverine?

Image via Marvel Studios/Disney

One of the craziest Deadpool 3 theories is that we'll actually see multiple Wolverines — not just Hugh Jackman's version. After the introduction of the TVA, the multiverse, and series like What If? (not to mention Dr. Strange and the Multiverse of Madness giving us John Krasinski as Mr. Fantastic!!), literally anything is possible when it comes to casting in the MCU these days. The most popular Deadpool 3 cast theory is that we'll see Taron Egerton and Daniel Radcliffe, both of which I will be more than happy with.

Is Deadpool 3 coming out soon?

Image via Marvel Studios/Disney

Deadpool 3 hits theaters July 26, 2024. The movie was originally scheduled for May 3, 2024, but because of the strikes happening in Hollywood, it became one of many delayed movies.

Who's in the Deadpool 3 cast?

Image via Marvel Studios/Disney

In addition to Ryan and Hugh, we'll see Morena Baccarin as Vanessa, Stefan Kapičić as Colossus, Brianna Hildebrand as Warhead, Shioli Kutsuna as Yukio, Owen Wilson as Mobius (who became a fan favorite after Loki), and Matthew Macfadyen and Emma Corrin in unannounced roles. Jennifer Garner will also reprise her role as Elektra from 2003's Daredevil and 2005's Elektra.

Is Deadpool's girlfriend alive in Deadpool 3?

Image via Marvel Studios/Disney

Yes, it appears that Vanessa is alive in Deadpool 3what?! Turns out, Wade used a time device (with a little help from Warhead and Yukio) to go back and save her before she met an untimely end. However, it looks like that one decision gets him in quite a bit of trouble with the Time Variance Authority (TVA)...

Why is Deadpool 3 part of the MCU?

Image via Joe Lederer/Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation/IMDb

After Disney acquired 21st Century Fox in 2019, characters like the X-Men, Deadpool, and the Fantastic Four joined the MCU. Hugh Jackman's involvement in Deadpool 3 marks Wolverine's introduction to the MCU. And while we're still waiting on the official announcement, word on the street is that our Fantastic Four will be played by The Last of Us star Pedro Pascal, The Crown's Vanessa Kirby, Stranger Things' Joseph Quinn, and The Bear's Ebon Moss-Bachrach. Talk about a star-studded cast!

Deadpool & Wolverine | Official Teaser | In Theaters July 26

Deadpool 3 — er, Deadpool & Wolverine — looks like it's going to be the craziest Deadpool film yet. The movie brings the classic funny-yet-gory story we've come to expect from Ryan Reynolds, but it also introduces newer MCU details like the TVA from Loki and the next chapter of superheroes thanks to Wolverine! We haven't seen the X-Men in the MCU before and I cannot wait to see how they make their mark on the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

If you're looking for drama, *super* intense family dynamics, and the beautiful landscape of an epic fantasy, then House of the Dragon is definitely a new TV show you need to watch. Season 1 of this Game of Thrones prequel (finally) gave us a dragon battle, and the entire House getting ready for war. House of the Dragon season 2 promises to be just as wild, if not more. And we're not the only one who's excited. During our exclusive Sydney Sweeney interview, the actress revealed she just binge watched the first season, and can't wait for the new installment! Here's everything you need to know about the new season — including the House Of The Dragon season 2 release date!

When is the House of the Dragon Season 2 release date?

Image via Theo Whitman/HBO

House of the Dragon season 2 is premiering on HBO and Max in June 2024. Via Variety, WB's J.B. Perrette (head of global streaming & games for Warner Bros. Discovery) confirmed the sophomore season would drop this summer during a conference at the beginning of March.

Who's in the House of the Dragon Season 2 cast?

Image via Theo Whitman/HBO

House of the Dragon season 2 will see the return of all your favorite actors, including Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Matt Smith, Eve Best, Steve Toussaint, Fabien Frankel, Ewan Mitchell, Sonoya Mizuno, Harry Collett, Rhys Ifans, Bethany Antonia, Tom Glynn-Carney, Phoebe Campbell, Phia Saban, Jefferson Hall, and Matthew Needham.

We'll also see Abubakar Salim, Gayle Rankin, Freddie Fox, Simon Russell Beale, Clinton Liberty, Jamie Kenna, Kieran Bew, Tom Bennett, Tom Taylor, and Vincent Regan in new roles this season.

What happens in Season 2 of House of the Dragon?

Image via Theo Whitman/HBO

House of the Dragon season 2 will pick up where season 1 left off (which is still about 200 years before the events in the Game of Thrones series we all know and love). We don't have an official plot synopsis for the new season quite yet, but we do know it'll feature the Taragaryens navigating power dynamics, politics, and, of course, dragons.

One plot line that fans are expecting, however, is the inclusion of Blood and Cheese. In the book series, these characters are assassins who sneak into the palace with the intention of murdering a member of the royal family to avenge the death of Lucerys Velaryon.

How many seasons of House of the Dragon are there?

Image via Theo Whitman/HBO

There are two seasons of House of the Dragon right now. But based on the fact that Game of Thrones was incredibly popular throughout its eight-season run, I wouldn't be surprised if we ended up getting at least five or six seasons of this prequel!

There are currently five books in the A Song of Ice and Fire book series, but author George R.R. Martin plans on finishing the series with seven in total.

Is House of the Dragon season 2 coming out?

Image via Theo Whitman/HBO

Yes, we're getting a House of the Dragon season 2. HBO announced the fantasy series would be getting a second season on August 26, 2022, which was only five days after its premiere!

In honor of Women's History Month, we're honoring some of our favorite celebrity BFFs, including ones you might not have known were friends — hello Emma Stone & Taylor Swift and Riley Keough & Dakota Johnson! But in my opinion, Tina Fey & Amy Poehler's friendship absolutely takes the cake. These women have been friends for over three decades, and continue to remind me why female friendships are so important. Their latest stunt? A double act! While you look up the closest Restless Leg tour, let's take a trip down memory lane, from SNL to Mean Girls.

Tina Fey & Amy Poehler's Friendship Timeline

1993 — Tina Fey And Amy Poehler Meet At Improv Class

In the early '90s, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler met at Chicago's iO improv theater. According to Amy Poehler's Yes Please memoir, the cofounder of the theater said that the duo were basically the same person, just with different colored hair! After performing at an improv group called Inside Vladimir, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler started at the Second City comedy club.

September 29, 2001 — Tina Fey And Amy Poehler Work At Saturday Night Live

After a few years in different cities, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler both began working for SNL. Tina became the comedy show's first head female writer in 1997, and in 2001, Amy became a cast member! Thank goodness, because I don't want to imagine a world without the "Meet Your Second Wife" sketch.

March 11, 2002 — Martin & Orloff Releases

In their first of many movies together, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler had smaller roles in Matt Walsh and Ian Roberts' Martin & Orloff, which also marked Tina's film debut! Amy appears as Orloff's friend Patty, while we see Tina as "Southern Woman."

April 19, 2004 — Mean Girls Releases

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler reunited onscreen in 2004's cult classic, eternally-pink Mean Girls. In addition to writing the story, Tina starred as Cady's (Lindsay Lohan) math teacher Ms. Norbury, while Amy took on the role of Regina George's (Rachel McAdams) "cool mom," toting around mocktails and a tiny dog.

October 22, 2005 — Tina Fey And Amy Poehler Cohost SNL's Weekend Update

Saturday Night Live's Weekend Update is arguably the funniest part of the show, and in 2005 it got even funnier because Tina and Amy became the hosts! The duo reunited as the cohosts ahead of the 2024 Emmys.

April 2008 — Tina Fey And Amy Poehler Are On The Cover Of Vanity Fair

Along with Sarah Silverman and nine other "queens of comedy," Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were photographed for the cover of Vanity Fair. And on April 25, 2008, the duo's first major movie (Baby Mama) released. The story follows Tina Fey's Kate, a businesswoman who hires Amy Poehler's Angie to be her surrogate.

November 9, 2010 — Amy Poehler Presents Tina Fey's Kennedy Center Award

Tina Fey won the Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in 2010, and there was no one better to present it to her than Amy Poehler, who described Tina as "a dynamite woman, a first-class lady, an upstanding broad and a straight-up dame" in her speech.

January 13, 2013 — Tina Fey And Amy Poehler Host The Golden Globes

Before we had 2024's wildly unfunny Golden Globes monologue, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosted the show in 2013 — then again in 2014, 2015, and 2021. They've also hosted the Emmys! Their friendship is definitely the foundation for their hilarious bits, and even in 2021, when the Golden Globes was partially virtual, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler shined!

October 28, 2014 — Amy Poehler Calls Tina Fey Her "Partner In Crime"

In her memoir Yes Please, Amy Poehler dedicated an entire chapter to Tina Fey (called, you guessed it, "Partner In Crime") *and* added an acrostic poem dedicated to her as well. "Sometimes Tina [Fey] is like a very talented bungee-jumping expert," she says. "All it takes is for Tina to softly say, 'We can do this, right?' and I suddenly feel like I can jump off a bridge."

May 10, 2019 — Tina Fey (And More SNL Alum) Star In Amy Poehler's Wine Country

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler starred together in Amy's directorial debut, Wine Country. The movie follows a group of girlfriends who take a (very messy) birthday trip to Napa Valley.

February 13, 2023 — Amy Poehler And Tina Fey Announce Their Restless Leg Comedy Tour

On Galentine's Day, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler announced they were *finally* going on their brand-new Restless Leg tour together in the spring and summer of 2023. And due to demand, they added more dates for the spring of 2024!

"If this tour goes right, we can finally end this friendship," Amy Poehler and Tina Fey joke in their official statement, via PEOPLE.

January 14, 2024 — Tina Fey Calls Amy Poehler Her "Work Wife"

Ahead of their Restless Leg Tour, Tina Fey sat down with TODAY's Willie Geist to talk about her friendship with Amy Poehler, saying they "have such an ease and shorthand working with each other."

"But, it is such a paid mom’s weekend," she continues about the new comedy tour. "We go there and we’re like, 'Where should we — I heard there’s interesting vintage shopping,'" she jokes. "And whatever city we go to, we have, like, a nice lunch just like (Chris) Rock and (Dave) Chappelle. And then we do our show, and if it’s a Saturday, we go to our room, and we watch 'SNL' from the hotel room. It's a dream."

We all need something to hold us over while we wait on Nine Perfect Strangers season 2, Big Little Lies season 3, and The White Lotus season 3 (after you've finished watching and rewatching Expats, of course). And good news! Apples Never Fall will totally satisfy your new TV show craving — and not just because it's based on a book by Big Little Lies author Liane Moriarty. The series is thrilling, complex, and has enough twists to keep you on the edge of your seat the whole time. If you're feeling on-theme, grab an apple cider cocktail and get cozy. Here's everything we know about Apples Never Fall.

What is the story of the Apples Never Fall?

Image via Peacock

Apples Never Fall (based on the book of the same name by Liane Moriarty) follows the Delaney family: retired tennis coaches Stan and Joy, and their now-adult kids Amy, Troy, Logan, and Brooke. Their time together gets upended when a wounded woman named Savannah shows up at their front door asking for help — and then disappears around the same time Joy goes missing. Now it's up to the kids to figure out where their mom went, and discover whether their parents' marriage was as perfect as it looked. That is, if they don't kill *each other* first. Watch the Apples Never Fall trailer here.

When is the Apples Never Fall release date?

Image via Jasin Boland/Peacock

Apples Never Fall drops on Peacock March 14, and you'll be able to watch all 7 episodes! Great for those of us who love to binge watch ;). Wondering what else is coming out this March? Check out our Spring Movie preview!

Who's in the Apples Never Fall cast?

Image via Vince Valitutti/Peacock

Apples Never Fall on Peacock stars Annette Bening, Alison Brie, Jake Lacy, Conor Merrigan-Turner, Sam Neill, and Essie Randles as the Delaney family, while Georgia Flood stars as Savannah.

Where was Apples Never Fall filmed?

Image via Jasin Boland/Peacock

Apples Never Fall started filming in Queensland, Australia starting March 2023. Australia has some seriously beautiful landscapes, and it makes the scope of the show that much more impactful. Not only is it just incredible to see onscreen, but it perfectly contrasts the intensity and ominous feel of the plot — and I'm totally here for it.

What is the ending of Apples Never Fall?

Image via Vince Valitutti/Peacock

Spoiler warning! While the season finale isn't out yet, the ending of the Apples Never Fall book is a fairly positive one. After spending the majority of the story MIA, Joy actually reappears at the end of the novel. She explains that before she left, she wrote a note telling the family she'd be away with Savannah. So when both Savannah and Joy disappeared — and the note got lost — everyone assumed the worst. I guess all's well that ends well?
