10 Ways to Spend More Time With Your Kids Than Your Phone

You’re the queen of the mommy apps. Your phone is filled with all kinds of digital glory that you use to categorize pics, organize playdates, schedule carpools, and do just about everything else in your life. And here you thought screen-time was just something your kids had to watch out for. Between apps, emails, texts, and streaming services, you’re on that same screen all day long. Take a deep breath, switch your phone/tablet/laptop off, and check out these ways to unplug from the digital side of parenting.

1. Keep a journal. Yes, a good ol’ paper journal. You know — one that you use an actual pen (not some sort of stylus) on. Journal out your anger, sadness, happiness, joys, triumphs, challenges, or anything else that comes with your day. Set aside at least 10 minutes every day just to write. Turn your phone off, put it far away, and just journal.

2. Create a calendar. No, not a spreadsheet. And no, don’t just update your phone’s calendar app. The rest of your family can’t see the spreadsheet you have locked in your computer. Post a dry erase calendar in the kitchen or some other central place. Write out the month’s schedule for everyone. Let everyone write their own schedules (except for your toddler, of course). This takes some of the pressure off of you and lets you share in a totally non-digital way.

3. Get artsy, with your family. Don’t stress if you’re not on the Martha Stewart crafting level. Whether you paint a portrait or just finger paint, letting your day go and the creativity flow is a bonding experience that the entire family can enjoy together.

4. Go outside, just because. You don’t need to GPS-out a walk around the neighborhood. Leave your phone at home, grab the stroller, and head outside with your honeys. Have an actual face-to-face conversation with your S.O. and forget all about the digital world.

5. Share a photo. Sharing pics of the littles is something you do on a daily basis. Forget about Facebook and Instagram and use the actual post. That is, the post office. Send Grandma, Grandpa, your BFF who now lives across the country, your sister, or anyone else who care about your kiddos their photos. Print them out, put them in an envelope, write a note (or better yet, have the kids write a note), stamp it, and send it!

6. Have a tech time-out. This one works for the entire family. Put everyone’s devices on a tech time-out for a period of time that you pick. Choose a time-out spot and take those badly behaving electronics to it. Put them on silent (so that they’re quiet), and request that they stay on time-out while you, your kids, and your other half have family time.

7. Camp out while camping in. When you wander into the woods, set up a tent, and have a family camping vacation, you don’t use your phone. Okay, so that’s probably because there’s no cell signal or WiFi way out in the middle of rural-ville. Pretend that you’re way, way, way away from anything that can stream data or connect to the internet and have a family camp-in. Set up a tent in the yard or fill the living room with sleeping bags.

8. Make your own mommy group. Those FB mommy groups certainly have their place in your life. They help you to explore and experience parenting through other people’s eyes, give you a supportive community to share with, and even offer tips that make taking care of your kids just that much easier. You don’t need a computer and a social media website to connect. Start your own neighborhood mom group — in person, at your home (or someone else’s home).

9. Take a picture. Oh wait, that’s using technology. Or is it? Believe it or not, they actually still make those 35mm film cameras. Buy a roll of black and white film (because everything looks better in black and white) and spend some time playing paparazzi with your kids. You can even frame the pics after you have them developed. Bonus points if you take a class and learn how to print your own photos.

10. Use an app to turn your phone off. Sometimes unplugging isn’t as easy as it should be. Try as you may, you just can’t start a digital detox. And that’s where detach apps — such as Moment (iOS) or BreakFree (iOS or Android) — come into play. They disable the “smart” features of your phone, turning it into an… um, phone. You set the amount of time and the app does its magic.

Apple unveiled their latest and greatest today, most notably introducing the iPhone 15 suite, improved iCloud storage plan options, and the Apple Watch Series 9. The new products bring forth some reasonably big changes to Apple’s existing technology – the company saying ‘goodbye’ to the Lightning port is just one example. Read on for everything, new and improved, that was just announced at the Apple Event.

The iPhone 15

New iPhone

The latest iteration of iPhone is the iPhone 15, and it will also be available as the iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and the iPhone 15 Pro Max. They’ll come in 5 colors: white, black, pink (rejoice!), green, and yellow. The Pro models are fitted with a strong, lightweight titanium casing, and have a 6.1-inch screen, while the Plus models boast a 6.7-inch screen.

No More Lightning Cables

And yes, you read it right – the Lighting charging ports are no more for new Apple products, including the iPhone 15. From now on, users will only be able to use a USB-C cord (that, according to Apple, ushers in potentially faster charging times) for charging their devices. The change makes things fairly easy for cross-functional purposes, as USB-C cords are also compatible with non-Apple products.

Action Button

The Lightning port isn’t the only thing that Apple said they’re retiring. The new iPhone no longer has a ring silencer slider on the side. Instead, it’s now called an “action button.” The action button will still silence alerts, texts, and calls by default, but will also be capable of other handy commands you tell it to complete.

Sharper-Than-Ever Camera

As expected, the iPhone 15 variations boast an updated camera system. The company’s stepped it up so that the smartphones have a 48-megapixel main camera with a larger sensor than ever before. The back camera also has a new “nanoscale coating” for handling lens flares and lowlight with expert skill. The camera system reportedly has more enhanced color, better image stabilization, and a 4K cinematic video mode.

Improved Connection

The new iPhones also feature an ultra wideband chip, which expands the device’s connection strength. This chip allows iPhones to connect to other devices from up to three times farther away. It’s incorporated into the “Find My’ technology that you may already use to find your friends, devices, and more.

Apple made sure to address pricing for the new iPhone, as well as existing models:

  • iPhone SE will start at $429.
  • iPhone 13 will start at $599.
  • iPhone 14 will start at $699.
  • iPhone 15 will start at $799.
  • iPhone 15 Plus will start at $899.
  • iPhone 15 Pro will start at $999.

The new iPhones start shipping and hitting stores on September 22.

Store More With New iCloud+ Plans

Apple also announced that starting September 18, iCloud+ will offer 6TB ($29.99/mo) and 12 TB ($59.99/mo) storage plans, which expands their previous largest offering of 2TB ($9.99/mo). The new plans are ideal for large photo and video libraries, or users of Apple’s Family Sharing.

Apple Watch Series 9

Shout Out To Sustainability

The company introduced the Apple Watch Series 9, which is reportedly Apple’s first-ever carbon-neutral product. They’ll also be making another sustainability effort by eliminating leather materials from the Apple Watch. The wristbands will no longer be made of leather, but instead, a material called “fine woven,” which is made from 68% post-consumer recycled content.

With The Tap Of A Finger

The most notable news surrounding the new Apple Watch is the introduction of hand gesture controls. With the watch on, users can tap their index finger and thumb together twice to answer (or end) phone calls, play and pause music, or snooze alarms. Siri can also take commands via the watch now.

Apple Watch Tune-Up

The Series 9 watch is now made with a custom S9 chip for faster processing, according to Apple. The screen features a new edge-to-edge display that doubles the brightness levels, plus the model is available in a new pink color!

Apple noted these updated prices for the Apple Watch:

  • Apple Watch SE starts at $249.
  • Apple Watch S9 starts at $399.
  • Apple Watch Ultra 2 is priced at $799.

On June 3rd, Jersey City's annual Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic returned for the first time since COVID. The event featured names like Bridgerton's Simone Ashley, Guardians of the Galaxy's Karen Gillan, and La La Land's Emma Stone. Not only did Emma wear a *gorgeous* skirt and sweater combo, but she also dished on what it was like to be one of the celebrity guests who secured tickets to Taylor Swift's Eras Tour.

Did Emma Stone reference Taylor Swift in her Oscars speech?

Image via Kevin Winter/Getty Images

The true answer to this question is maybe! During the Oscars in 2024, Emma Stone took home the award for Best Actress. During her speech she thanked her husband Dave McCary and their daughter, Louise Jean, who turns 3 on March 13, 2024. “I love you bigger than the whole sky, my girl," Emma said while accepting the coveted golden statue.

While Emma didn't directly call out Taylor Swift, this does connect to "Bigger Than The Whole Sky" from Taylor Swift's Midnights era. The song ended up holding *huge* meaning for mothers, which makes Emma's speech even more meaningful than it already was.

Is Emma Stone a Swiftie?

Image via David Livingston/Getty Images

Yes, Emma Stone is definitely a Swiftie! “I’ve known her since we were 17 and 18, so she hooked me up, which was very nice ’cause I know those tickets are impossible to get,” Emma told Vanity Fair at the polo match. “She’s a wonderful friend. She blows my mind."

Emma does not, however, have any desire to get onstage to sing with Taylor, even though she won an Oscar for her role as Mia in 2016's La La Land. “I can’t sing, like, for a massive stadium," Emma says. "Let’s not even go down that road."

After Taylor Swift announced the tracks for Speak Now (Taylor's Version), fans were quick to point out that one vault track reminded them of the The Amazing Spider-Man actress: "When Emma Falls In Love (Taylor's Version) (From The Vault)."

How did Taylor Swift and Emma Stone meet?

Image via Jamie McCarthy/Getty Images

Emma and Taylor met in person at HollywoodLife's Young Hollywood Awards in 2008 but connected over email before then, via Cosmopolitan. Over the next few years, Taylor attended Emma's Easy A premiere and Emma got a front row seatat Taylor's Speak Now tour.

If Taylor and Emma were close in 2010, that means Taylor would have gotten a front row seat to Emma's relationship with Andrew Garfield (whom she famously dated from 2011 to 2015).

Since we know that "Fifteen" from Fearless is about Taylor's longtime friend Abigail and fans have speculated "dorothea" from evermoreis about Selena Gomez, writing "When Emma Falls In Love" about another one of her friends would make sense.

Did Taylor Swift attend the Poor Things premiere in NYC?

Image via Dia Dipasupil/Getty Images

We finally got to see Emma Stone and Taylor Swift show off their friendship again at the December premiere of Emma's new movie Poor Things. The film is a creative, outlandish feat and Taylor showed up and showed out with an all-black ensemble that's totally giving Reputation. Years-long friendships that evolve and change with you are so special, and I'm obsessed with this one!!

Are Emma Stone and Taylor Swift still friends?

Image via Roy Rochlin/Getty Images

Yes, Emma Stone and Taylor Swift are still friends! Emma showed up to the Eras Tour this year, while Taylor just attended the Poor Things premiere and released When "Emma Falls In Love (Taylor's Version)" which I'm convinced is inspired by the actress. Emma also recommended La La Land choreographer Mandy Moore to help with Taylor's tour prep. It's clear the two understand and support one another, and that is one of my favorite things about female friendships!

Did Emma Stone introduce Taylor Swift to Joe Alwyn?

Image via Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images

Yes, Emma Stone reportedly set up Taylor Swift and her ex Joe Alwyn when they were filming The Favourite together.

Amid dire concerns that TikTok threatens U.S. national security, bans against the app have spread like wildfire. Beyond just government devices, some universities initiated bans, with the latest policy talks going as far as to include personal devices as well. Though it’s unlikely that the platform will be completely banned (there are other proposed solutions, like selling the app or amending its data policies) due to free speech, the possibility of a ban raises another concern: the livelihood of small businesses.

TikTok is a central avenue for small businesses to promote their products and services, with special thanks to its algorithm, says Johannes Larsson, Founder and CEO at Financer.com.

“The platform's unique algorithm, which prioritizes content discovery and virality, has enabled many small businesses to reach and connect with potential customers in a way that wasn't possible through traditional social media platforms,” says Larsson. “Since its growth has been exponential throughout the years as a key marketing channel, the ban triggered the markets for sure.”

TikTok also masters the art of connection. Your For You Page knows exactly what you like to see. This gives small businesses the ability to get closer to their audience and reach more success that way, says saysLynzee Krohne, Founder of branding agency LEO + LAINE.

"On TikTok, brands have the freedom and space to be more casual and less branded," Krohne said. "Because of the nature of TikTok, it allows brands to let their guard down a bit and create content that may be a little more rough around the edges—which helps them appear to be much more authentic to their audience."

Jessica Tran, founder of @jtmobiledetailing, says 60% of customers choose her car detailing shop because they saw it on TikTok. Jaz and Sam Sears, owners and operators of@aztaco.king, grew their business from a food cart in a parking lot to two restaurants in less than 6 months, due to their success on the app. Megan Gersch, a web designer and brand identity creator, says around half of her client base comes from TikTok, which often turn into 4 to 5-figure contracts.

This positive growth for small biz is commonly attributed to the app’s distinctive features that connect creators with consumers, such as live video streaming, a virality-driven algorithm, and the ability for users to personalize their daily feeds.

“TikTok has been a great tool for allowing me to connect with my audience on a deeper level,” says Gersch. “There's a special magic that happens with video marketing that you can't achieve with a text or static image post. Your audience gets to know your quirks, your mannerisms, and they start to feel like they know you, even though you've never met. Every time you see a new video from one of your favorite creators, it's like a FaceTime call from a trusted friend.”

In its absence, small business TikTokers would have no choice but to adapt and pivot their marketing strategies, which is not always easy when they’re doing it DIY-style, says Larsson.

“While small businesses may be able to find success on other social media channels, the competition for visibility and engagement is often more intense [than on TikTok], making it harder for them to stand out. The time and effort required to establish a new presence and create content tailored to the specific characteristics of other platforms could be a significant burden on small business owners.”

Small businesses pivoting to other platforms might face different struggles for exposure, due to consumers being very platform-specific, according to Krohne.

"If [TikTok] brands begin to focus their content efforts on Instagram, they’re up against multiple types of content, and competing in a more content-saturated world," Krohne told us. "TikTok mostly has one content offering, and that’s why it’s insanely popular. There’s a difference between platforms. Brands must diversify their content and show up in other places to keep a steady stream of touchpoints to remain top of mind and memorable."

Though Gersch is no stranger to restrategizing, a potential TikTok ban would still impact her business as a web designer and brand creator.

“I've been a marketer for 16+ years, and one thing that I have learned along the way is that you need to constantly test, look at your analytics, and create where the attention is,” says Gersch. “If TikTok goes away, there will be a huge gap in the market that will need to be filled.”

TikTok recognizes the work that small business owners take on in order to find success, which is why the platform has committed $1 million each to the Hispanic Heritage Foundation to elevate entrepreneurship in the Latin community, and Black Girl Ventures to support Black and Brown women entrepreneurs.

“Five million US businesses turn to TikTok to take us inside their world in a fun, authentic way, and as a result, they are reaching new customers, hiring more employees and growing their business,” says Becca Sawyer, Global Head of SMB for TikTok. “By partnering with HHF and BGV and launching virtual workshops, we're strengthening our commitment to build an inclusive and supportive platform where small business owners and entrepreneurs can share their story, find their audience and drive real business results."

We can’t make a solid prediction for the destiny of the beloved app for now, but we do know that it’ll be dearly missed by small businesses and consumers alike if bans (at any capacity) go through.

“I don't want Tiktok to be banned - not only is it an integral part of my business, but I have also been able to connect with so many incredible people that I wouldn't have met otherwise,” says Gersch. “It's my go-to source for inspiration, learning, and even a good laugh.”

Following in the footsteps of movie musicals like Mean Girls, Wicked might just be the movie we're most excited for in 2024. The fantastical design, beautiful songs, and enemies-turned-besties relationship between Elphaba and Glinda come together like magic. The show first opened on Broadway in 2003 with Idina Menzel as Elphaba and Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda. Stephen Schwartz, lyricist and composer, has teased the film since 2017, and every little bit of new news gets us more excited to finally travel to Oz on the big screen. Keep reading for everything we know about the gravity-defying new movie!

Why was Ariana Grande at the Oscars 2024?

Image via Rodin Eckenroth/Mike Coppola/Getty Images

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo presented the award for "Best Score" and "Best Original Song" at the Oscars 2024! The duo showed up ahead of the Wicked movie (which hits theaters this fall), wearing their best Oz-approved fashion. Ariana Grande wore a voluminous bubblegum pink gown from Giambattista Valli Haute Couture that was reminiscent of Glinda the Good Witch, while Cynthia Erivo channeled Elphaba in a leather green Louis Vuitton dress.

While the aesthetic and fabric of both dresses were very different (similar to their Wicked characters!) both Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo looked stunning and otherworldly thanks to the artistic silhouettes. I am simply in love with Ariana's off-the-shoulder bubble cape, and Cynthia's ruffled sleeves. I can't wait to see the rest of their press looks!

What is Wicked about?

Image via Universal Pictures

Wicked is an origin story for the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good from The Wizard of Oz. As young women, Elphaba and Glinda uncover the wizard's plot to suppress all of the animals in Oz and keep his power. When Elphaba tries to expose him, he frames her for the act. Wicked will be directed by Jon M. Chu, who also directed 2021's In The Heights. We loved his work on that blockbuster musical, so we can't wait to see what Chu brings to the big screen with Wicked this time!

When is Wicked coming out?

Image via Universal Pictures

Wicked: Part I was originally scheduled for a Christmas Day release, but will now premiere in theaters on November 27, 2024. The sooner, the better IMO!

Who will play Elphaba in the wicked movie?

Image via Cynthia Erivo/Instagram

Elphaba will be played by Broadway star Cynthia Erivo. She starred in a revival of The Color Purplefrom 2015 to 2017, winning a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her performance. She also took to the screen in films like Harriet, Pinocchio, and Bad Times at the El Royale. Cynthia Erivo first teased her Wicked look in an Instagram post, and we can't wait to see more!

Who is playing Glinda?

Image via Ariana Grande/Instagram

Popstar and actress Ariana Grande will play Glinda in the films. We're very excited about this, especially after she sang "The Wizard And I" at the 2018 Wicked 15th Anniversary Special. Ariana may be a global pop sensation, but she has strong roots in musical theatre, starring as Charlotte in 13 the Musical in 2008. She's also been asking the Wicked team about a movie for over ten years!

“Since I was 20, I was like, ‘Hey, I don't know when this is happening, but when it's happening, may I please at least just audition?’" Ariana Grande tells Amazon Music's Zach Sang. "That's all I wanted, was an audition. I've never wanted anything more.”

Ariana prepped for the audition with “voice lessons every day, acting lessons every day” for six whole months. “I trained every single day to prove to [Wicked producers] that I could handle taking on this other person," she says.

Who else is in the Wicked movie cast?

Image via Universal Pictures

We got a first look at Bridgerton season 3 star Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero the week of May 13. We already know that he can sing so we're extra excited to see him in action alongside Ariana and Cynthia!

The three actors are joined by a powerhouse cast including Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard and Everything Everywhere All At Once star (and Academy Award winner!!) Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible. The cast also features Broadway actor Ethan Slater as Boq, Marissa Bode as Nessarose, SNL star Bowen Yang as Pfannee, and The Greatest Showman star Keala Settle as Miss Coddle.

"The wicked movie now has an academy award winner, grammy winner, tony winner and an oliver award winner," says @sheeshgwws on X. "i mean the talent is stacked."

Why is the Wicked movie two parts?

Image via Universal Pictures

Wicked will be split into two parts, just like the Broadway show. That way, the stakes will feel higher, and we'll have more time with the characters! The two-part release follows in the footsteps of blockbusters like The Hunger Games and Dune. Wicked: Part I will premiere in November 2024, and the second part will follow the next year.

As much as I love Tom Holland and Zendaya and Shaun White and Nina Dobrev, celebrity friendships are *just* as important as celebrity relationships! Emma Stone is one celeb with some very fun friends (hello Taylor Swift!), but the friendship that continually makes headlines is the one she shares with Ryan Gosling. As iconic as this duo's filmography is, their relationship is even better. From Crazy, Stupid, Love's Dirty Dancing lift to breaking our hearts in La La Land, here are the friends' best moments.

Emma Stone And Ryan Gosling's Friendship Timeline

Image via Warner Bros.

July 19, 2011 — Emma Stone And Ryan Gosling Star In Crazy, Stupid, Love

Crazy, Stupid, Love is continually praised as one of the funniest ensemble movies of the 21st Century, and for good reason. The film, which stars Emma Stone, Ryan Gosling, Steve Carrell, Julianne Moore, and Joey King, introduced Emma and Ryan, but it also gave us their recreation of the Dirty Dancing lift, which is something I didn't know I needed until I saw the movie. You can stream Crazy, Stupid, Love on Hulu!

Summer 2011 — Ryan Gosling Says "There's Nobody Like" Emma Stone

It's hard to believe, but during their Crazy, Stupid, Love era, Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling were even more fun offscreen than they were in the film! "Emma Stone is just, like, constantly opening Christmas presents," Ryan Gosling said during the movie'spress junket (via ET Online). "There's nobody like her. As soon as she signed on to the film, I knew it was going to be good."

January 7, 2013 — Ryan Gosling And Emma Stone Team Up On Gangster Squad

Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling took a step back to the '30s to share the screen in 2013's Gangster Squad. In addition to our favorite BFFs, the mobster vs. cops movie stars Josh Brolin, Nick Nolte, and Sean Penn. The real standout though? Emma Stone's incredible wardrobe. I mean just look at that red dress! You can rent Gangster Squad on Amazon Prime.

December 9, 2016 — Emma Stone And Ryan Gosling Star In La La Land

In their most acclaimed joint project to date, Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling broke the internet as Mia and Sebastian, an actress and jazz pianist (respectively) who are both trying to make a name for themselves in LA. The movie continues to be a source of Halloween costume inspo, heartbroken TikToks, and takes up a good portion of my summer playlist. La La Land also won Emma Stone an Oscar at the same ceremony it was mistakenly announced as the Best Picture Winner. Talk about drama! You can stream La La Land on Tubi.

September 30, 2017 — Emma Stone Joins Ryan Gosling On SNL

SNL fans got a huge treat during the fall of 2017 when Ryan Gosling served as host — and Emma Stone showed up as a surprise guest! And of course, his monologue included references to La La Land. "I was like, me, Ryan Gosling, I’m like a white kid from Canada, I can try and save jazz, so…I did!” Ryan jokes during his monologue.

“You didn’t save jazz,” Emma says after surprising the audience. “WE saved jazz.”

March 10, 2024 — Ryan Gosling Shares A Silly Moment With Emma Stone During "I'm Just Ken"

These two musical goofballs just can't help themselves when it comes to a little song and dance. During Ryan's performance of "I'm Just Ken" at the 2024 Oscars, he interacted with the crowd — as one with that much "Kenergy" does — and made his way to Emma's seat. The two shared a little moment together, obviously giving the rest of us so much life as they did so. La La Land 2, anyone?!
