The Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics Mascot Finalists Are Here and We Love Them ALL

As the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, get ready to kick off in February, officials are already looking ahead to the 2020 Summer Games in Tokyo. Today, the six finalists for the 2020 Olympics mascot were unveiled in a primary school in Tokyo, and we think they’re all winners.

The finalists consist of three pairs of mascots, with one for the Olympics and one for the Paralympics.

The first two characters are said to embody both “old tradition and new innovation.” The second set features a lucky cat and fox hybrid, said to be good luck, and a guardian dog that is a popular fixture at Japanese shrines. The third set is based on Japanese characters — the fox and the raccoon — and features Japan’s red and white colors.

The children of Japan will get to vote on the winner, with each primary school class casting a single vote between December 11 and February 22. The winner will be announced on February 28, shortly after the Closing Ceremony of the Olympic Winter Games.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympics Mascot Selection Panel said they reviewed over 2,000 entries from the public, and that they’re striving to embody innovation and harmony with this year’s selection.
