Your Birth Order Might Have a Huge Impact on Your Weight

With it being New Year’s resolution time and all, lots of us are marking our calendars with times to go to the gym (and times to avoid the gym at all costs), shelling out money for new workout gear and even revamping our grocery lists to be more health conscious. Yes, clean eating and exercise go a long way to help you maintain your fitness, but according to a new study, your weight might be impacted by something that is entirely outside of your control — your birth order.

The Swedish and New Zealand study looked at 13,500 pairs of sisters and found that older sisters have a 29 percent higher chance of being overweight with a staggering 40 percent likelihood of being obese. Yikes. The study looked at sisters from their birth weight all the way to their weight at the time of their first pregnancies and it found some surprising trends. On average, older sisters were likely born weighing a little less than their younger sisters, but researchers found in the first trimester of their pregnancies, the older sisters had an average BMI of 24.4. Younger sisters had an average of 23.8 BMI. According to the scientists, this seemingly marginal difference is actually statistically significant in the grand scale of the study.

Why though? Theories the researchers have proposed included favoritism. The firstborn often received more food and meticulous attention when very young, and such eating habits might be hard to break. Another suggestion, however, goes back to the womb — the placenta specifically. The theory posits that first time mothers might have narrower blood vessels leading to their placentas, which then reduces the supply of nutrients that goes to the baby. Consequently, this time in utero “reprograms the regulation of fat and glucose, so that in later life, the individual is at risk of storing more fat and having insulin that works less effectively,” says Dr. Wayne Cutfield, senior author of the study and a professor of endocrinology at the University of Auckland in New Zealand, which kind of explains the lower average birth weight too.

But hey, older sisses, don’t get glum. Studies have also shown that older siblings have a higher IQ too. So there’s that. Either way, don’t let where you fall on your family tree define you. You do you, girl.

Everyone knows our favorite Kirsten Dunst from her roles in Spider-man, Bring It On, and Marie Antoinette. But did you know that she's also been married to another actor for almost a decade? Her husband is actually also an actor who has been featured in some of our favorite movies as well — Jesse Plemons! He's best known for his work on Friday Night Lights, Breaking Bad,Killers of the Flower Moon, and Love & Death. Talk about a talented, successful duo! This pair has been together for almost a decade and we are simply obsessed with them. Keep reading for all the details on how they got together, fell in love, and what they're up to now.

How long have Jesse Plemons and Kirsten Dunst been married?

Image via Monica Schipper/Getty Images

After six years together, People confirmed in July 2022 that Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons got married. The two actors are still very much in love, and recently showed up to the April 2 premiere of their spring movie Civil War in Los Angeles. Kirsten looked both chic and edgy in a black dress with contrasting fabric and tulle trim, while Jesse wore a gray suit and white shirt. Both choices totally stand out against the lime green detail of the backdrop!

Who is Jesse Plemons?

Jesse Plemons is a 35 year old, American actor best known for his work on Friday Night Lights as Landry Clarke where he got his first big break in the industry. He has also been in films like Killers of the Flower Moon, Power of the Dog, and TV shows like Breaking Bad and Fargo. He's originally from Texas, which is where he also attended school and worked before he switched careers to acting.

For his work as an actor, he has been nominated for a BAFTA and even an Academy award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. He's also received a Primetime Emmy Award and a second Emmy nomination.

Where did Kirsten Dunst meet her husband Jesse Plemons?

Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons met on the set of Fargo where the two co-starred. And although they had an instant connection, they didn't start actually dating until after filming wrapped. So they met in 2015, started dating in 2016, got engaged in 2017, and were pregnant by 2018.

Dunst said in an interview with theLA Times, "We fell in love creatively first. He was like a creative soul mate to me and the way we both work. On Fargo I knew after two weeks. I didn’t remember saying this, but one of my best friends told me that I said to her that 'I will know this man for the rest of my life. I just know it.'" How sweet is that?! We're just obsessed with this sweet couple.

Have Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons been in any movies or TV shows together?

Like we mentioned before, the pair met while working together and fell in love with their respective creative and working styles so they are familiar with it. After filming and falling in love on Fargo, the pair went on to work with each other again in The Power of the Dog, for which they both received Oscar nominations! What a successful team they make! Kirsten said in an interview with the LA Times, "We love working together. So, it’s really, really easy to work with each other. We’re very honest. We’re very down to try anything. No one judges anybody. There’s no ego. It’s just, how do we make this the most alive together and the most real?" It makes sense that since they fell in love working together that it just comes naturally for the pair!

Have Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons won any Oscars?

The pair have been nominated for many awards, but both of them were actually nominated for an Oscar for the first time together! They found out they were both nominated together via a phone call that Kirsten later recounted to Jesse. She recalls the conversation in an interview with Variety by saying, "Then I called Jesse, and I was the first person to tell him, and he was a little shell shocked. I mean, it’s just so crazy to be a couple and have our first nominations together. It’s like a storybook. You know what I mean? It’s so weird. It’s amazing." However, unfortunately the two haven't won any Academy Awards...yet!

In an interview with VogueDunst says, "My husband and I were nominated together. Honestly, I was more excited that he got nominated than me. And then to do that together, who gets that?" It's so sweet that they're so incredible supportive of each other and their successes.

Do Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons have children?

The pair have two children together, born in 2018 and 2022. Their first son is named Ennism and the second is named James! They got pregnant shortly after being engaged, and their sons are just the absolute cutest. On the name Ennis, Jesse told Jimmy Kimmel on Jimmy Kimmel Live in 2019, "It’s like an old cowboy name. We found it online. You know, on those baby websites where you just keep scrolling. We were like, ‘We like that. It sounds cool.’”

Today, they are still as in love as ever raising their 2 sweet kiddos. In an interview with Voguethis April Dunst said, "My son has been watching the OG Spiderman sometimes. He doesn't care that I'm in it." Safe to say, they don't know their mom is an absolute icon!

We love this sweet couple and can't wait to see what they get up to next!

If you're struggling to get out of bed in the morning, it can feel hard to tackle the day with an energetic mindset and upbeat attitude. I personally have struggled with insomnia my entire life, and it's occurred to me multiple times that my body simply wasn't built for the society we live in. But if you're still clueless as to how to become a morning person (like I was), creating a routine can help coax your body into a rhythm so you wake up more refreshed and ready for the day ahead. Here are the seven steps I took to improve my sleep, reduce my insomnia, and become more of a morning person.

Go To Bed Earlier

Photo by nine koepfer on Unsplash

It sounds obvious, but going to bed earlier can have serious implications on your energy levels in the morning. I used to go to bed around 10 p.m., but due to my insomnia, it would often be 12 or 1 a.m. before I actually fell asleep, all before waking up at 6. Do the math on how many hours of sleep that is per night! (Hint: Not enough.)

In addition to implementing some good nighttime routine practices (we'll get there in a moment), I decided that due to my long window between going to bed and falling asleep, I should really be hitting the hay around 9 p.m. Even if you don't suffer from insomnia, it may be that you need more sleep than the average person. Studies have found that some people simply need more sleep than others.

Sleep In Darkness and Silence

Photo by Mingwei Lim on Unsplash

Another thing that really helps a lot of people is tweaking your sleeping environment so you can sleep in complete darkness and silence. Blackout curtains are a must if you live on a street that stays lit into the night, and it goes without saying that small lights from phone chargers or electronics should be moved into other rooms.

Getting total silence is another story. Many of us don't have the option, but if you have a finished basement in your home, it might be worth moving your bedroom downstairs so you can sleep in an area protected from noise pollution. If not, a white noise machine can help cover up loud or sudden noises so your sleep isn't disturbed at night.

In addition to curating the perfect environment for sleep, making your ideal bedding situation as cozy as possible will really help you relax. Get ready to crawl into your most comfortable nest, hot tea in hand.

Consider Your Lifestyle And Chronotype

Considering your lifestyle as well as your body's natural preferences can be crucial for setting a healthy sleep-wake schedule. If you work out after work, for example, you may want to set a later bedtime and later wake time, because exercise can trigger energy-boosting hormones that make it harder to fall asleep for about 90 minutes after activity. Do you work early in the morning? Adjust your bedtime accordingly.

One important factor in your ideal sleep-wake schedule is your chronotype. A chronotype is essentially an MBTI type for your sleep patterns; there are four basic chronotypes, and each has a different biological preference when it comes to sleep.

  • Lion: These people are early birds, and they probably aren't reading this article because they're already morning people!
  • Bear: Most people fall into this category. These individuals' sleep-wake preferences are generally aligned with the sun. They wake up relatively easily in the morning (provided they have good sleep hygiene) and start to tire around 8 p.m.
  • Wolf: If you absolutely loathe mornings and find yourself energetic long into the night hours, you may be a wolf chronotype. These people are classic night owls.
  • Dolphin: This is my personal chronotype. Dolphins are anxious sleepers, often remaining awake long after getting into bed, and sleeping lightly throughout the night.
You can discover your chronotype by taking this quiz.

Wake Up With What You Need

Photo by Jarek Ceborski on Unsplash

Now let's get to the fun part: Creating your actual routine. Half of becoming a morning person is, naturally, your morning routine. Give yourself a head start by waking up with whatever you need right next to you (or at least prepped nearby). Here are some examples:

  • If your plan is to work out in the morning, have your gym clothes folded on your nightstand.
  • Before going to bed at night, heat some water and pour it into a Hydro Flask, along with a few drops of lemon. Place it on your nightstand... it'll still be warm when you wake, making the healthy habit of drinking a morning lemon water incredibly easy.
  • Get a coffee maker with a timer so your coffee is already brewed when you wake up.
  • Wintertime chills got you cuddling in bed long after you should've gotten up? Keep your robe and slippers right next to your bed so they're ready to slip on as soon as you wake.

Create A Routine You Actually Like

This tip is super simple: Don't overcomplicate your mornings! People on social media tend to have aspirational morning routine ideas, but if journaling for 20 minutes isn't your idea of a good time, don't do it. Here are some easy and enjoyable activities you might want to add to your morning routine:

  • Eat a delicious breakfast (and it doesn't have to be a complex one! Nostalgic breakfast cereals are totally OK).
  • Read your favorite magazine or website.
  • Pull a tarot card.
  • Light a scented candleor some incense.
  • Listen to music.
  • Have fun playing with makeup and creating your look for the day.
  • Cuddle with your pet (just don't do it in bed, or you might never want to get up!).

Try Light Therapy

Photo by Fidel Fernando on Unsplash

Another way to help yourself wake up in the morning, especially if you're really struggling, is to try light therapy. The New York Times described just how big a role light plays in our circadian rhythms. If you're trying to reprogram your own sleep-wake cycle, using a light therapy machine when you wake up can help communicate to your body that it's time to be awake. If you live in a climate where it's appropriate, natural light works too:

“That means eating breakfast in a sunny place, opening the shades in the bedroom or getting outside” soon after waking, Dr. Jodi Mindell, Ph.D., professor of psychology at Saint Joseph’s University and associate director of the Sleep Center at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, told the Times. “It’s using that morning light time to keep their clock on track and not shift later.”

Stay Consistent On Weekends

Finally, don't let all the hard work you do throughout the week go to waste when the weekend comes along. The Monday through Friday, 9-to-5 schedule, while still not totally ubiquitous, is a fairly recent invention and doesn't mirror the cycles our bodies were designed for. Your body doesn't recognize Saturday as any different from Monday!

So while it can be tempting to let yourself sleep in on the weekends, keep up your new routine every day. Over time, it will grow to be so natural that you simply wake up around the same time each day, without even having to try.

We are now two for two on expecting Taylor Swift to announce Reputation (Taylor's Version) during an acceptance speech and getting an album announcement instead. After showing up to the 2022 VMAs in a "Look What You Made Me Do"-inspired outfit and announcing Midnights, Taylor Swift wore a black and white ensemble on the 2024 Grammys red carpet before telling the world her new album The Tortured Poets Department is coming this spring!

And while accepting the 2024 iHeart Radio Music Award for Artist of the Year, Taylor also promises the rest of 2024 will be just as exciting as 2023. "We have so many exciting things ahead of us," the 1989 (Taylor's Version)singer says after thanking iHeart and the fans. "Most importantly, I have a brand new album called The Tortured Poets Department, which comes out on April 19. I cannot wait to share it with you...I am so blown away and so thankful and I just can't wait to keep having fun with you guys because we have a lot of exciting things coming up. Thank you so much."

Here's everything we know about the new Taylor Swift album. (Here's everything you need to know about Taylor Swift (Taylor's Version) too ;)).

What is Taylor Swift's The Tortured Poets Department?

Image via Taylor Swift/Instagram

Taylor Swift's new album (which is also referred to as TS11) is called The Tortured Poets Department. Taylor Swift announced the album while accepting the award for Best Pop Album at the 2024 Grammys. While we don't know the exact vibe of the album, over the last year, we've gotten quite a few clues about what we can expect! Just like "Daylight" at the end of Lover sets up Midnights, I think "Dear Reader" sets up The Tortured Poets Department.

Taylor's official announcement features beautiful language that evokes the same emotion "The Lakes" does, which makes me believe TTPD will be similar to Folklore and Evermore (maybe it'll even serve as the third sister album Swifties thought we'd get in 2021?). Some fans are also convinced TTPD connects to Reputation, and TBH, I'm hopping on this train!

"I think the two albums are sisters albums, but in like an opposite way," one Reddit user says. "Reputation is all black, this one is going to be all white and softly coded."

"Reputation is presented as a dark album but is truly a love album," another user comments. "This one is presented as soft and white but I bet the lyrics will be devastating."

I'm expecting TS11 to have the same lyrical prowess as songs like "Would've, Should've, Could've," The National's "The Alcott" (on which Taylor's a featured artist), and "You're Losing Me." Taylor is all about looking past appearances and telling a complex story, and The Tortured Poets Department will be no different. Just like Reputation is an edgy, glittery, emotionally-charged version of the beginning of her relationship with ex-boyfriend Joe Alwyn, I totally agree that TTPD could look grounded, airbrushed, and dreamy from the outside, but the lyrics will be SAD.

There's also been some discussion that TS11 could be another pop album that's even more nuanced than Midnights. Well, during her Eras Tour show in Sydney, Australia she played yet another round of suspicious surprise songs. While sitting at the piano, Taylor Swift takes her earpiece out and calls attention to the keyboard. "Do you hear that?" she says (via TikTok). "My damn keyboard's playing a synth sound." She then does what she almost always does when dropping an Easter egg: she smirks.

"That sound is how the album starts, mark my words," one comment reads. Another says, "That smirk tells me everything I need to know."

When is The Tortured Poets Department release date?

Image via Neilson Barnard/Getty Images for The Recording Academy

The Tortured Poets Department is dropping April 19, 2024. But on February 16, an artist by the name of Nils Sjöberg posted a song titled "The Tortured Poets Department." You might be wondering, "Why is this noteworthy? Who's Nils?" Nils Sjöberg is the pseudonym Taylor Swift has been using for over 10 years! With the fake name, she's written hits like "This Is What You Came For" by Rihanna, so when the title track of TS11 popped up on Spotify, it didn't take long for Swifties to notice.

The singer's voice sounds like it could be an auto-tuned version of Taylor's, but admittedly, it could also be AI. With the recent advancements in audio AI, some tracks from The Tortured Poets Department have supposedly leaked online, but we'll have to wait until April 19th to hear what the album *actually* sounds like. Either way, Nils' song is a fun one to listen to!

At the Eras Tour shows in Tokyo, Taylor Swift explained when she started working on TTPD. “I’ve been working on Tortured Poets since right after I turned in Midnights,” she said onstage. “So, you turn in an album months in advance…and I’ve been working on it for about two years. I kept working on it throughout the U.S. tour and when it was perfect, in my opinion, when it was good enough for you, I finished it.”

"Soon you'll get to hear it, soon we'll get to experience it together," she continued. "I'm over the moon about the fact that you guys care about my music...Everyone’s like, ‘Why do you make so many albums?’ And I’m like, ‘Man, because I love it! I love it so much! I’m having fun, leave me alone.'”

The brand new album follows Speak Now (Taylor's Version) and 1989 (Taylor's Version). When Midnights was announced after Fearless (Taylor's Version) and Red (Taylor's Version), I wondered whether she'd have a two rerecordings, one new album pattern and it looks like that's what we're getting!

How do I presave The Tortured Poets Department?

Image via Taylor Swift's official store/UMG

Before The Tortured Poets Department's release on at midnight on April 19 (we're less than a month away!), go ahead and pre-save it. It'll make streaming the album a little bit easier because when you pre-save, the album will pop up for you as soon as it drops! Go to Taylor Swift's official website and click on the "Pre-add/Pre-save" button. It'll take you to a new page where you can save it on Spotify or Apple Music (depending on which service you use), and you can also pre-order at stores like Target!

How many songs will be on The Tortured Poets Department?

Image via Taylor Swift/Instagram

Taylor Swift dropped The Tortured Poets Department song list February 5, and we already have theories about what each track could reference. IMO, "I Can Do It With A Broken Heart" is totally referencing Taylor Swift's performances of "Lover" following her split from Joe Alwyn (you can see her crying during the set), while there's a good chance "Florida!!!" is referencing her first Tampa concert, which was the first show she performed after the breakup became public knowledge. Taylor Swift's dad Scott Swift recently told fans he's most excited for Swifties to hear the title track and "Florida!!!" Here's the full tracklist for TS11:

  1. Fortnight (feat. Post Malone)
  2. The Tortured Poets Department
  3. My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys
  4. Down Bad
  5. So Long, London
  6. But Daddy I Love Him
  7. Fresh Out the Slammer
  8. Florida!!! (feat. Florence + The Machine)
  9. Guilty as Sin?
  10. Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?
  11. I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can)
  12. loml
  13. I Can Do It With A Broken Heart
  14. The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived
  15. The Alchemy
  16. Clara Bow
  17. Bonus Track: The Manuscript
  18. Bonus Track: The Bolter
  19. Bonus Track: The Albatross
  20. Bonus Track: The Black Dog

Will The Tortured Poets Department be explicit?

Image via Taylor Swift/Instagram

There are 7 explicit songs on The Tortured Poets Department: "The Tortured Poets Department," "Down Bad," "But Daddy I Love Him," "Florida!!! (feat. Florence + The Machine)," "loml," "I Can Do It With A Broken Heart," and "The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived."

What is The Albatross about?

Image via Taylor Swift/Instagram

During one of her Eras Tour shows in Sydney, Australia, Taylor Swift announced a new version of The Tortured Poets Department featuring exclusive bonus track "The Albatross." This new album already has some crazy track titles — all with pretty noteworthy meanings.

According to Collins Dictionary, if you call someone an Albatross, "they cause you great problems from which you cannot escape, or they prevent you from doing what you want to do," while a Bolter could refer to someone bolting out of a relationship (or bolting from a restaurant to a car like in this viral clip 🤨).

Meanwhile "The Alchemy" refers to the continual process of trying to turn something into gold — remember how Taylor Swift spent 6 years saying her relationship with Joe Alwyn was golden? Buckle up Swifties, TS11 is going to be a wild ride.

What does loml mean?

Image via Taylor Swift/Instagram

At first glance, the twelfth song on The Tortured Poets Department, "loml," means "love of my life." Some fans were wondering if the song was a nod to Harry Styles since his Harry's House finale track is "Love of My Life" (the album also features a track named "Daylight" which is another funny connection to Taylor Swift). But Bonnie & Emily from ChatsAndReacts have got me thinking about the track in a whole new way.

Emily says that while Taylor might sing about the love of her life at the beginning of the song, she also has the potential to switch it up each verse. "Lie of my life" and "loss of my life" are HEART WRENCHING, and totally something Taylor would write.

How can I buy The Tortured Poets Department?

Image via Taylor Swift store

You can pre-order a bunch of different versions of The Tortured Poets Department on Taylor Swift's website right now, includingThe Tortured Poets Department CD + Bonus Track "The Manuscript", The Tortured Poets Department CD + Bonus Track "The Manuscript" andThe Tortured Poets Department Cassette + Bonus Track "The Manuscript".

What is a tortured poets department?

Image via Taylor Swift/Instagram

Taylor Swift has spent years talking about her anxiety, her sleepless nights, and her emotions. "My muses, acquired like bruises / My talismans and charms / The tick, tick, tick of love bombs / My veins of pitch black ink," she writes in her official Instagram post. "All's fair in love and poetry." My guess is that The Tortured Poets Department features a bunch of artists who all feel very deeply and have a similar ethereal, larger-than-life approach to their music.

As far as the name, it looks like The Tortured Poets Department could be referencing her ex-boyfriend Joe Alwyn's group chat name — "The Tortured Man Club" with Paul Mescal (who starred in Normal People while Joe starred Conversations With Friends. Both series are based on Sally Rooney books).

Will The Tortured Poets Department have any featured artists?

Image via Frazer Harrison/Getty Images

Yes, The Tortured Poets Department will feature Florence + The Machine on the song "Florida!!!" and Post Malone on the song "Fortnight." And after Taylor Swift teased a variety of collaborations by posting handwritten lyrics from artists like Harry Styles and Lorde, Swifties are wondering if The Tortured Poets Department will be the "collab album" we never got.

Another clue that leads me to believe this is true is the fact that the title of this album is so much longer than her other titles — and she refers to herself as "Chairman" of the department. Who are all the constituents?! Are they all the same artists who left Scooter Braun's management last year? Only time will tell, because as far as I'm concerned, surprises aren't out of the question until the TS11 era is over!👀

What is the theory of Taylor Swift's double album?

Image via Matt Winkelmeyer/Getty Images

Throughout her stay in Sydney, Australia for the Eras Tour, Taylor Swift has been dropping lots — and I mean lots — of twos. @v_swiftie_ points out that in addition to holding up the number two while announcing The Tortured Poets Department, she's been playing more surprise song mashups than normal, and Taylor Nation has been posting Instagram stories featuring the number 2 instead of the number 13. Suspicious, Tay, very suspicious.
