This App Lets You Virtually Try on New Makeup

Walking through aisle after aisle of makeup displays packed full of products can be a little overwhelming, especially this time of year with holiday makeup out in full force. It’s fun to browse and all, but actually shelling out dough for products is a different story. You want to be 100% confident the shade, formula, texture and tone of the product you’re choosing is just right. Even if you do a color test on your wrist or neck, you probably won’t be totally sure that it’ll appear the same way on your face. That’s where ShadeScout, a cosmetic color search app, comes in. The app can match colors from your surroundings to makeup products — but their latest update just took this rad beauty-meets-tech innovation one step further, just in time for the holidays.

ShadeScout’s latest update lets you virtually try Stila Cosmetics’ products — including their brand spankin’ new holiday palettes. Instead of guesstimating that a deep eggplant purple eyeshadow will look good on you, fire up this app and see for yourself — all without having to dirty up your fingers with tester products and spending money before you’re totally sold on the stuff. It’s perfect for when you want to play with different holiday looks you could go for too.

After some coworkers and I played with this app (shoutout to our creative coordinator Maddie and our front desk associate Rebecca for their selfies!), we all decided that it’s a fun and addictive update — just like the virtual lipstick try-on feature in Sephora’s app. This app update is one worth downloading if you want to become a makeup maven, have a blast figuring out your go-to holiday look or just be able to buy the exact shade you’re feeling (you can shop right from inside the app). Oh, and def don’t throw down on a Stila holiday palette before testing it out with ShadeScout.

As soon as the days get longer and the slightest bit of green reappears on the trees, I enter my gardening era. I’m not blessed with a naturally green thumb, but over the years, I've learned a lot through trial and error and managed to grow some yummy vegetables. There’s plenty of guides out there about how to start a vegetable garden, but this one is specifically tailored for beginners. The city apartment porch growers. The new homeowners. The pot-by-the-window gardeners. We all have to start somewhere and a garden of any size is still a garden.

This guide will cover the basics from best places to plant to on-going maintenance, as well as some FAQs I’m sure you have. Activate your cottagecore dreams, let’s grow something!

How To Plan Your Vegetable Garden

Photo by Greta Hoffman / PEXELS

Before you start planting, take the time to plan your vegetable garden. Consider the following steps:

Choose The Right Location

Select a spot with access to ample sunlight (at least 6 hours per day. For in-ground gardens, make sure the space you’re consideration has well-draining soil. Ensure the chosen area is easily accessible for watering and maintenance. For indoor, place your containers near windows that receive ample sunlight. Leafy greens like lettuce and herbs can thrive with around 4-6 hours of sunlight, while fruiting plants like tomatoes may need more. Also consider weight restrictions and wind exposure. Use lightweight containers, secure taller plants to prevent toppling, and choose wind-resistant vegetables like leafy greens and herbs.

Size Matters

It may be tempting to go all in your first season. But it can be very overwhelming, so don’t be afraid to start small. Begin with a manageable garden plot, perhaps 4x8 feet. As you gain confidence and experience, you can expand your garden.

Prepare The Soil

Test the soil in your chosen area and amend it with compost or organic matter to enhance fertility. Loose, well-aerated soil promotes healthy root growth. For balcony or indoor gardens, you’ll be starting from scratch so pick a quality compost or potting soil that drains easily and is packed with nutrients. Container gardening is the go-to method, but not just any container will do. Select containers with proper drainage holes to prevent overwatering.

Select The Best Vegetables

Consider starting with easy-to-grow vegetables like tomatoes, lettuce, carrots, and herbs. These are forgiving for beginners and fruit on their first season. If you’re in smaller, balcony space or indoors, choose vegetable varieties that are well-suited for container gardening such as bush or dwarf varieties of tomatoes, peppers, and compact herbs. Another option is vertical gardens. Leafy greens such as spinach, lettuce, and kale, as well as herbs like basil, mint, and chives, thrive in indoor conditions.

Best Practices for Planting

Photo by Greta Hoffman / PEXELS

So you’ve bought your soil and your seeds or plants, now what? Here are my best tips for planting!

Raised Beds vs. In-Ground Gardens

Raised beds provide better drainage and control over soil quality, making them an excellent choice for beginners. Planting directly into your existing ground can certainly be done, but will require you prep and care for the soil before planting.

Companion Planting

Some vegetables thrive when planted together, providing mutual benefits like pest control and nutrient-sharing. For example, plant tomatoes with basil to deter pests and enhance flavor.

Seed Selection And Starting

Opt for high-quality seeds or young seedlings from reputable sources. I’d recommend starting with seedlings for your first go, as they skip the germination stage and provide a head start.

Plant Spacing

Follow the recommended spacing guidelines on seed packets to prevent overcrowding. Proper spacing ensures each plant receives adequate sunlight, water, and nutrients.

Watering, Feeding, and Maintenance

Photo by Gustavo Fring / PEXELS

Now the fun part — tending to your garden. Once everything has been planted and begins to grow, your job is only beginning. Consider these tips:

Watering

Provide consistent, deep watering to encourage strong root development. Watering early in the day is best and it’s worth it to invest in a drip irrigation system or soaker hoses for efficient water distribution. For your container gardens, use self-watering containers to maintain consistent moisture levels, especially in indoor environments with controlled humidity.

Fertilizing

Think of fertilizer as food for the plants. Use organic fertilizers or compost to nourish your garden. Follow recommended application rates and avoid over-fertilizing, which can harm the plants.

Weeding

If you see a weed, pull it! It can compete with your growing garden for nutrients. Mulching around plants helps suppress weeds and retain soil moisture.

Keeping Pests Away

Keep an eye out for common pests and diseases. When you can, Introduce natural predators like ladybugs and encourage biodiversity to maintain a balanced ecosystem in your garden. In small settings, reach for natural pest deterrents like neem oil. Regularly inspect your plants for signs of pests, and address issues promptly to prevent infestations.

Harvest Time

Photo by Zen Chung / PEXELS

When the wait is over and your plants look ready to eat, there’s no better feeling. Keep these considerations in mind:

Understanding Harvest Times

Each vegetable has a specific harvesting time. Harvest leafy greens, such as lettuce and spinach, when the leaves are young and tender. Root vegetables like carrots and radishes are ready when they reach a desirable size, while tomatoes and peppers should be picked when fully ripe.

Check Often

Regularly inspect your garden for signs of ripeness. Look for vibrant colors, firm textures, and mature sizes. Overripe fruits and vegetables may lose flavor and nutritional value.

Harvesting Tools

Invest in a few basic harvesting tools, such as pruners or scissors for cutting, and a gentle touch for handling delicate produce. Proper tools can make the harvesting process more efficient and minimize damage to plants.

Storing And Enjoying The Harvest

After harvesting, store your produce properly. Some vegetables can be stored in a cool, dark place, while others may need refrigeration. Enjoy the fresh flavors of your harvest by incorporating them into delicious meals, salads, or even preserving them for later use.

Continual Harvest

Many plants, especially those like beans, cucumbers, and zucchini, benefit from continual harvesting. Regularly pick mature fruits to encourage the plant to keep producing.

What is the easiest vegetable garden for beginners?

Photo by ROMAN ODINTSOV / PEXELS

For beginners, it's recommended to start with vegetables that are forgiving and relatively easy to grow. Tomatoes, lettuce, carrots, and herbs like basil and mint are excellent choices. These plants typically require minimal care and flourish in a range of environments.

What vegetables grow well together?

Photo by Kampus Production / PEXELS

Try planting these together: tomatoes with basil, carrots with onions, lettuce with radishes, cabbage with dill, rosemary with sage, and beans with corn. These combinations create a symbiotic relationship that benefits both plants.

How often should I water my vegetable garden?

Photo by Karolina Grabowska / PEXELS

This really depends on your climate, soil type, and the specific needs of your plants. As a general rule, water your garden deeply and consistently, aiming for about 1 inch of water per week. Adjust based on weather conditions and the moisture level of the soil.

Can I use tap water for my garden, or is rainwater better?

Photo by Matteo Badini / PEXELS

Both tap water and rainwater can be fine for your garden. However, if your tap water is high in chlorine or other chemicals, consider letting it sit for a day before using it. Rainwater is ideal as it's naturally free of additives, and plants often respond well to it.

How do I know if my plants need fertilizer?

Photo by cottonbro studio / PEXELS

Monitor your plants for signs of nutrient deficiencies, such as yellowing leaves or stunted growth. If your plants show these symptoms, it may be time to fertilize.

What is the best time of day to harvest vegetables?

Photo by Any Lane / PEXELS

The best time to harvest vegetables is in the morning when temperatures are cooler, and plants are well-hydrated. Harvesting in the morning helps preserve the freshness and flavor of your produce.

How can I extend the growing season for my vegetables?

Photo by Anastasia Shuraeva / PEXELS

Consider using techniques like mulching to retain soil warmth, row covers to protect plants from frost, and cold frames or greenhouses for temperature control. These methods can help you harvest fresh produce for a more extended period.

How do I know when my vegetables are ready to be harvested?

Photo by Kampus Production / PEXELS

Harvest times vary for different vegetables. Generally, vegetables are ready when they reach a mature size, have vibrant color, and can be easily separated from the plant.

The Barbie movie premiered on July 21, 2023 and as self-proclaimed movie fanatics and lovers of all things pink, we absolutely loved it. As predicted, Barbie was the movie of the summer, if not the movie of the year. From the Barbie World Tour to Ryan Gosling's "I'm Just Ken" EP to the Barbie The Movie: In Concert, it always feels like summer! Here's the latest news on Margot Robbie's Barbie movie.

Did Barbie win an Oscar?

Image via Amy Sussman/Getty Images

Barbie won one award at the 2024 Oscars: Best Original Song for Billie Eilish and Finneas' "What Was I Made For?" The film was nominated for six other awards (namely Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor for Ryan Gosling, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Song for Ryan Gosling and Mark Ronson's "I'm Just Ken," Best Production Design, and Best Costume Design).

Even though the movie didn't win big, the stars absolutely did because they looked *amazing* on the red carpet! Margot Robbie wore a black number to the awards show, but the real stunner was the 1996 gold Mugler bodysuit she wore to the Vanity Fair after-party. This was a super exciting look because for Barbie's entire press run, Margot has only worn either black or pink. Gold feels like the perfect way to send off the biggest movie of the year!

What is Barbie the movie in concert?

If you've never been to a movie concert, let me tell you it is *magical.* You'll be able to watch the movie on a large LED screen while The Barbie Land Sinfonietta plays the compelling and emotional (not to mention already iconic) score on the stage below. What awards is Barbie up for?

Barbie is up for a few Grammys and Oscars (which you can read about below), and on November 27, Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig attended the Gotham Awards in New York City. Margot wore another Barbie-inspired outfit with a black ensemble inspired by 1964's Black Magic Barbie, and my first question is where *I* can get a cape like this!

At the awards show, Greta won an Icon & Creator Tribute, while Ryan Gosling was nominated for Supporting Performance.

The film premiered in theaters on July 21, 2023 (we were the ones dressed in all pink). And now, we can finally stream the film on Max!

Who's on Barbie: The Album?

Image via Atlantic Recording Corporation/Warner Bros.

Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice's "Barbie World" featuring Aqua (the OG singer) is one of the songs on Barbie the Album that we can't get enough of. Two queens coming together to support the new movie's iconic soundtrack is the *best* way we could've imagined spending the summer.

Pop icon Dua Lipa is also bringing her talents to the film's soundtrack in addition to acting in the movie. In a teaser video she posted, we got a brief cameo of Dua stepping out of her pink heels, Barbie-style, as well as a close-up shot of her blowing a kiss to the camera, already starting the buzz. We love the *totally* disco vibe from her track. Although she revealed on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon that her hit song "Dance The Night Away" almost didn't make it on the soundtrack. At least, not the version we know.

"It's all about Barbie's [best] day ever, and then she starts having an existential crisis and she starts thinking about death," Dua Lipa tells Jimmy. "It's like 'Okay, how do we create a song that encapsulates a really fun disco party but at the same time has these underlying, shaky feelings?'"

Dua Lipa and her collaborator Mark Ronson started leaning into those shaky feelings and that turmoil, but realized it didn't fit the scene the way they intended. They ended up writing "Dance The Night Away" like a score, basing some of the lyrics off the movements of the actors and creating a song that meshed well with the story the cast was already telling. "It was unlike anything I'd done before!" Dua says.

The rest of the lineup for Barbie The Album(available to buy on vinyl, CD, and even cassette tape)was announced on May 25 and includes names like Lizzo, Nicki Minaj, Ice Spice, and *even* Ryan Gosling! Here's the artists involved:

  • Ava Max
  • Charli XCX
  • Dominic Fike
  • Dua Lipa
  • FIFTY FIFTY
  • GAYLE
  • HAIM
  • Ice Spice
  • Kali
  • KAROL G
  • Khalid
  • Lizzo
  • Nicki Minaj
  • Pink Pantheress
  • Ryan Gosling
  • Tame Impala
  • The Kid LAROI
  • Billie Eilish

Barbie received an incredible number of Grammy nominations this year. "Dance the Night" by Dua Lipa and "What Was I Made For?" were both nominated for Song of the Year, and "What Was I Made For?" was also nominated for Record of the Year. Ryan Gosling's "I'm Just Ken" is nominated for Best Song Written for Visual Media, and "Barbie World" by Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice Featuring Aqua is nominated for Best Rap Song. "Barbie" has also been nominated for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media (Includes Film and Televison)!

Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas O'Connell wrote "What Was I Made For?" for the Barbie soundtrack. Director Greta Gerwig told the duo, viaThe LA Times, that she wanted "Barbie’s heart song — the song that is deep inside her core that she doesn’t even completely know is there but that she starts to hear more clearly throughout the film.”

The song became my personal favorite on Barbie the Album, and spawned a viral TikTok trend celebrating the beautiful, messy parts of womanhood. “It was so moving, dude. It was so, so touching,” Billie tells Variety about the trend. “I feel like I helped bring people together, and it felt so special. I wasn’t expecting to have women around the world feel connected.”

Not only did we get to see the entirety of the film (including that one detail in the Barbie ending we totally missed the first time) but there was also brand new post-credit footage that Greta Gerwig handpicked herself!

“We made Barbie for the big screen, so it’s a thrill to be able to bring it to IMAX, the biggest screen of all,” Gerwig says in a statement. “As a special thanks to Barbie fans, we’re excited to share a little bit more of our cast and crew’s incredible work by adding special new footage we hope audiences will enjoy.”

Barbie costume designer Jacqueline Durran talked to British Vogue about her work on the film, as well as the fact they only had 11 weeks (!!) to make all of the costumes.

“Barbie is a very useful way to look at different ideas of femininity: what that means, who owns it, and who it’s aimed at,” Durran says in the interview. Some of Margot Robbie's looks are sassy (like her cowgirl outfit) and some are sweet (like her gingham dress), but all of them play a larger role in the film.

"One aspect of the film is self-discovery," Durran continues. "We were able to choose elements of Barbie fashion that were appropriate for those scenes that also gave a subtle nod to her internal journey.”

The first thing we're thinking after watching this trailer is how much the actors really do look like Barbie dolls! The costuming might just become one of our favorite things about the film (not to mention the iconic opening sequence à la 2001: A Space Odyssey).

What Is The Barbie Movie About?

A lot of previous Barbie movies place the iconic doll in fairy tales or navigating high school, but the Greta Gerwig film (which premiered July 21, 2023) takes a whole new approach. The plot focuses on Margot Robbie's Barbie, who gets expelled from Barbieland and goes off to explore the real world.

In a 2021 interview with British Vogue, Robbie says that while playing Barbie comes with both baggage and nostalgia, "people generally hear ‘Barbie’ and think, ‘I know what that movie is going to be,’ and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they’re like, ‘Oh, well, maybe I don’t...’”

Finding a way to balance adulthood with finding comfort in the things from our childhood (a champagne brunch at the American Girl store anyone?), there's something to be said for getting in touch with your inner child.

In a July interview with Ebony, Issa Rae (who plays President Barbie in the film) talks about the impact that the dolls had on her childhood.

“It was another step on the ladder of my journey with my racial identity, just because I saw how passionate my parents were about me playing with Black Barbies, though I didn’t know it was that serious,” she says. “I was just there trying to make scenes with my Barbies. And I think in some ways, that was my first foray into storytelling and directing.”
