It goes without saying that Mary Poppins is a childhood staple. Her songs, her magical umbrella, and her killer fashion sense stand the test of time, so I was happy that the new Mary Poppins with Emily Blunt is not a remake, but another chapter of the story. For this Halloween, why not throw it back and dress up as the classic English nanny? Mary Poppins has lots of outfits, but I chose to do the costume from the Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious number. It’s as easy to put together as it is elegant.
In terms of Disney costumes, this one is pretty magical.
For Mary Poppin’s dress, I found this OWIN White Lace Dress ($27) on Amazon and added a Paul Jones Dress Petticoat Tutu ($13) underneath to give it more volume. I sewed red ribbon bows along the bottom of the dress skirt and glued white ribbons to this Aivtalk Red Corset Waist Belt ($11), also from Amazon. I put an eBoot Fake Detachable Collar ($8) under the dress and tied a red ribbon around her neck.
For the details, I bought a white MissCynthia Wide Brim Hat ($16) and a pair of white Fever Fingerless Lace Gloves ($7). For her shoes, any white bootie would do, but I bought a pair of Getmorebeauty Lace High Heel Ankle Boots ($38) from Amazon. I painted sections of a Cultural Intrigue White Paper Parasol ($12) pink and glued lace ribbon along the edge for Mary Poppin’s umbrella.
For Ms. Poppin’s classic updo, loosely pull your hair up into a bun, leaving out the baby hairs in your hairline. You can use your fingers to gently pull them out and even curl them with a small wand to replicate her texture. If you don’t have dark hair, either give your hair a spray with brunette colored hair spray, or buy a wig that is designed to go into a pony. I suggest the hair spray, since you’ll be wearing a hat.
As for makeup, go with a full coverage foundation and be sure to bronze, highlight, and blush up! For your eyes, apply a charcoal smolder accented with some bronze and highlight. Finish off by penciling in your brows, add a couple coats of mascara, and hit your lip with a mauve berry pigment.
And there you go! Practically perfect in every way.
