Everything You Need to Know About CBD, the Latest “It” Wellness Ingredient

Cannabidiol (CBD) has become somewhat of a darling in health and wellness circles. Like the latest “It” girl, people can’t seem to stop talking about CBD, and it’s everywhere — in skin creams, chocolate, beverages, and even pet products. A quick Google search for “CBD products” yields over 129 million results, and the reported benefits include everything from reducing under-eye puffiness to helping with anxiety, body pain, and insomnia. So what exactly is this so-called miracle ingredient, and does it actually work? Here’s the straight dope on CBD.

1. What is CBD and… can it get me high? CBD is a cannabinoid, a natural compound found in the cannabis plant. There have been over 100 cannabinoids identified. Most people have heard of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) because that’s what gets you high; CBD, on the other hand, is non-psychoactive, so while it can have other medicinal effects on your body, it won’t get you stoned. In addition, the World Health Organization concluded that CBD “does not appear to have abuse potential or cause harm,” and the World Anti-Doping Agency in 2018 removed it from its list of prohibited substances.

All cannabinoids work with the endocannabinoid system, which is designed to maintain homeostasis in your body by regulating sleep, appetite, mood, and pain, among other things. According to Len May, CEO of Endocanna Health — a company that makes DNA kits to help determine your personal cannabis compatibility — CBD and THC work on different receptor sites in the body, which is why they have different effects. THC tends to bind to CB1 receptors, which are located in the brain and nervous system (and linked to emotions, appetite, and motor control), whereas CBD binds to CB2 receptors in the immune and digestive system (linked to inflammation and pain).

2. Are there different types of CBD? CBD can be sourced from hemp or marijuana; they’re both in the same cannabis plant family, but hemp contains less than 0.3 percent THC. Says Jewel Zimmer, founder of Juna, an SF-based company that makes CBD and/or THC infused drops, “The hemp variety tends to be stockier and more fibrous, but it’s still packed full of all the cannabinoids you’d find in a cannabis plant.” Anyone can buy hemp-derived CBD products online, but you can only buy marijuana-derived CBD from a dispensary. Regardless of its source, CBD is CBD and will have the same effect.

3. So, CBD is legal, right? It’s… complicated. Marijuana is federally illegal (though legal for medical and/or recreational purposes some states), and hemp is federally legal for pilot programs under a 2014 Farm Bill. At least 40 states have passed legislation related to industrial hemp, and there are a number of active pilot programs around the country that grow hemp legally under research guidelines. There are also state-specific differences in terms of cultivating vs. selling legal hemp. The expected passage of the Hemp Farming Act of 2018, which will legalize hemp under federal law and allow CBD to sold legally in all states, might clear up some confusion. “It’s going to change the whole landscape,” adds Zimmer, “not just for hemp, but it’s also the initial movement for changing the legalization of cannabis federally.”

4. What can I use CBD for? A lot of clinical research still needs to be done to prove any health benefits of CBD, but anecdotal information has suggested it’s a “potent anti-inflammatory, great for balancing mood, stress, hormones,” according to Zimmer. “CBD’s whole purpose is to create homeostasis in the body.” It’s not a cure-all, but early studies have linked CBD as a potential treatment for anxiety, pain and inflammation, breast cancer, and insomnia. Perhaps the most promising evidence of its medical (and commercial) use, May points out, is through big pharma: GW Pharmaceuticals earlier this year released the first FDA approved medicine derived from the cannabis plant (Epidiolex, a CBD-based drug to treat childhood-onset epilepsy).

How you consume CBD depends on what you’re trying to address. The fastest way to administer CBD (other than injection directly into the bloodstream, which no one does) is via smoking or vaping, though burning plants can create certain by-products. Elixirs or tinctures you drop directly on your tongue are the next-fastest way to get CBD into your system. Then there are topical rubs and creams, which have to go through the skin and don’t penetrate the blood barrier, and edibles or capsules, which are the slowest because they have to go through your digestive system and get metabolized by your liver. So, for example, May explains, if you are trying to deal with under-eye puffiness, you may opt for a cream to reduce inflammation. But if you’re trying to get rid of a headache, you might want something a little faster and accordingly choose a tincture.

5. How much should I take? Unfortunately, there is no clear-cut answer — CBD’s effectiveness on any given individual depends on a number of factors, including their genetic makeup, tolerance, symptoms, and any other medications or supplements they’re taking. May suggests starting with around 25 mg a day. “With everything, start low and work up. Figure out what works for you.” The method you use to ingest CBD will also affect how fast you feel the effects; if you don’t feel anything from an edible immediately, it doesn’t necessarily mean it isn’t working.

Zimmer says you can tell when you’ve had too much CBD because it works on a bell curve, like any other herb or adaptogen. If you have just the right amount, it’s like a lock and key. Too little and you won’t feel anything; too much and you may get more side effects. “It’s subtle, but it’s kind of like when you’ve had one too many cups of coffee or a little too much kombucha. [You] don’t feel amazing, but you really can’t hurt your body. It’s a really safe plant.”

There are no reported studies demonstrating any fatal overdoses of cannabinoids. In addition, says May, the evidence so far suggests that your body doesn’t adapt to particular levels of CBD in a way that would create drug tolerance and over time necessitate higher doses for the same effects. “There haven’t been any studies yet that show there is this overabundance of CBD that is bound to the receptors, and you keep needing more and more to get the same effect. We have seen that on the THC side because that molecule binds pretty aggressively to the CB1 receptor. On the CBD side, people are consuming the same daily dose and getting the same results.”

6. If you’re otherwise healthy, is there still a benefit to taking CBD? May says yes, and that he considers CBD as part of an overall wellness routine. He says he consumes CBD as a daily supplement, “just like I would with any other mineral or vitamin. You’re helping to protect your immune system, you’re helping protect your neural pathways.” Zimmer agrees. “Your whole body is working around this endocannabinoid system, so the healthier we can keep it, the more active we can keep it, the better the rest of our body is going to work.” She takes it daily for stress and balancing hormones and says it’s like “a healthy pause almost. It’s very clearing, it’s very focusing.”

7. What should I look for in a CBD product? May suggests that when looking for CBD products you treat them just like you would any other purchase — look for a reputable brand and something on the packaging that shows the product was tested, where the CBD is sourced, and how much CBD is actually in it. “You want to know that the product is exactly what it says. Any reputable brand, if they’re saying [the dosage] is 25 mg, they have to make sure it’s 25 mg. Using common sense is going to be helpful, especially when you’re going to be putting something in your body.”

Zimmer encourages people to look for whole-plant extract or whole spectrum, where you’re getting other plant compounds such as terpenes and flavonoids in addition to the CBD, because she says everything works synergistically together. “I’m a huge believer that keeping the plant intact is not going going to be a better medicine, but a better feeling. Your body knows how to process it much better.”

TL;DR: There are many possible benefits of incorporating CBD into your lifestyle, but more clinical research has to be done to truly prove its effectiveness. Interested in trying it out for yourself? Each product combines hemp with various terpenes to create a different effect: Aceso Calm has grapefruit and lavender to help reduce anxiety, Aceso Soothe has cinnamon and anti-inflammatory turmeric to relieve pain, and Aceso Wellness uses lemon and orange oil to support energy and immune function.

Charlotte’s Web’s Full-Strength CBD Oil ($40+): This CBD oil only has three ingredients: whole-plant hemp extract, oil, and flavor (it comes in olive oil or mint chocolate). There is approximately 10 mg of hemp extract per 1 ml serving, and it’s designed to support everyday stresses and increase calmness and focus. There are also extra-strength (25mg per 1 ml) and original formula (43mg per 0.5ml) versions.

Edibles

Sunday Scaries CBD Gummmies ($39): To help deal with Sunday (or even everyday) scaries, these little gummy bears have full-spectrum CBD along with vitamins B12 and D3. Each bottle contains 20 gummies, each with 10mg of CBD.

Dirty Lemon x Beboe + CBD ($65 for 6): The trendy water company has previously released versions with hyped-about ingredients such as collagen, charcoal, and turmeric. Their latest product has 20 mg of full-spectrum CBD (sourced from Beboe) per bottle to help you have a clear head and relaxed body.

Recess ($30 for 6): Upgrade your La Croix with Recess, a CBD-infused sparkling water in made-for-Instagram pastel cans. Each flavor — Blackberry Chai, Pom Hibiscus, and Peach Ginger — has 10mg of full-spectrum CBD.

Topical

Cannuka CBD Calming Eye Balm ($38): Cannuka’s products combine CBD with Mānuka, arguably the queen bee of honey (it’s claimed to provide both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits). The hydrating eye balm also has vitamin E and grapeseed and rosehip oils to help reduce under-eye puffiness and dark circles.

Be Trū Wellness Body Pain Relief Cream ($50): This body cream uses a patented nano-amplified hemp extract to increase absorption into the body to provide quick pain relief that lasts for up to six hours.

La Mend The Good Patch ($12): These patches contain 15 mg of hemp-derived CBD (there are also plant-based only patches) and meant to be worn for 12 hours to address four different ailments: Hangover, Nite Nite, Be Calm, and Period.

Nothing's more irritating than having to throw out fresh fruit you just bought because it either ripened too fast or was already festering with mold. And what food is the biggest culprit? Usually, it’s bananas. One of the most widespread baking recipes to make with overripe bananas is banana bread. Why? Because it’s simple, delicious, and an automatic crowd-pleaser. Freeze Them For Your Smoothies

When in doubt, put your overripe bananas in the freezer. Then you’ll at least have time to think on what to do with them—and you can throw them in your morning smoothies. Bananas last up to three months in the freezer ideally, and pair well with a variety of different flavor profiles, like caramel, blueberry, chocolate, or orange.

Ice Cream, Anyone?

There is nothing better than sorbet or ice cream in the summer months. All you really need is frozen ripe bananas, any other frozen fruit you prefer, milk (whichever kind you enjoy— almond, oat, etc.) and some sweeteners like honey or vanilla extract. Make Dog Treats

Don’t leave out your furry friends— they love bananas too! Making long-lasting dog treats “relieves the pressure on the idea of food waste, plus there is a bonus that your pets are spoiled, happy, and nutritiously rewarded,” says pastry chef Susan Bae of the critically-acclaimed restaurant, Moon Rabbit in Washington D.C. Check out her go-to dog treat recipe below:

Chef Susan Bae’s Dog Treat Recipe:

250g organic whole wheat flour

240g organic peanut butter

70g organic, unsweetened apple sauce

56g mashed overripe banana

113g organic plain bone broth

25g organic shredded cheddar cheese

25g freeze dried blueberries

Preheat oven to 350F.

1.) Mix to combine whole wheat flour, peanut butter, apple sauce, bone broth and banana. Until a dough is lightly formed.

2.) Fold in shredded cheese and dried blueberries to evenly distribute in dough.

3.) Roll dough out to 1/4” thickness and use your favorite cookie cutters to cut out treats.

4.) Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper and bake dog treats until firm and dry to touch (this varies with each oven) Check at 45 minutes.

5.) Store at room temperature for up to 1 week in an airtight container or in the fridge for up to 3 weeks.

Traveling can be so rewarding; new experiences lend to a broader and more understanding mindset and taking time away from your everyday routine can feel like a much-needed breath of fresh air. Whether you’re headed away on a quick weekend accompanied only by a carry-on, or jet setting on a bachelorette trip to celebrate a lifelong girlfriend, trips are good for the mind, body, and soul.

While the positive aspects that accompany traveling are plenty, it’s completely normal to experience anxiety around this process as well. It’s inevitable that each time you take a trip you’re usually forced to encounter one uncomfortable situation or another; planned or not. Maybe your flight gets delayed, your friend can no longer watch your pet while you’re away, or you get sick just days before heading overseas; the unpredictability of travel can be extremely anxiety-inducing, and we get that.

Instead of leaving you to fly solo to stress about the potential anxieties of any upcoming trips you may have on your calendar, we spoke with California-based mental health professor, Dr. Ishan Shivanandwho has experience in groundbreaking protocols for reversing symptoms of stress, anxiety, depression, and more.

What is anxiety?

Dr. Shivanand describesanxiety as "a complex state that can manifest in various forms and intensities, affecting both the mind and the body." He continued, saying, “At its core, anxiety involves feelings of worry, fear, and unease, often accompanied by physical symptoms such as increased heart rate, sweating, trembling, and difficulty concentrating. One way to understand anxiety is to think of it as the mind being overwhelmed by the multitude of thoughts, concerns, and stimuli bombarding it at any given moment. Just like a computer with too many open applications, the mind struggles to process everything efficiently, leading to a sense of being scattered and unable to focus.”

Why do I get anxious when I travel?

When it comes to anxiety specific to travel, the reason for why you may experience these uncomfortable feelings could be due to a multitude of reasons and can vary in intensity from person to person. Dr. Shivanand shared that travel anxiety could be in part due to “fear of the unknown, fear of safety, fear of flying, control issues, and past traumatic experiences,” as well other areas of anxiety including “separation anxiety, social anxiety, and health anxiety.” Dr. Shivanand went on to explain that, although fun, “traveling often involves stepping outside of one's comfort zone and encountering unfamiliar situations, environments, and people. For some individuals, the uncertainty of what to expect can trigger feelings of anxiety.”

No matter why you experience anxiety related to travel, “It's important to recognize that travel anxiety is a common and valid experience, and there are various strategies and coping mechanisms available to help manage it,” offered Dr. Shivanand. “These may include relaxation techniques, cognitive-behavioral strategies, gradual exposure to anxiety-provoking situations, seeking support from mental health professionals, and planning ahead to minimize stressors during travel.”

​How can I control my travel anxiety ahead of my upcoming trip?

  • Plan and Prepare in Advance: “Plan your trip ahead of time to reduce uncertainty,” says Dr. Shivanand. “This includes booking accommodations, transportation, and activities in advance, as well as familiarizing yourself with the destination, and local regulations.” Having a loose agenda of things to look forward to when your trip starts is a great way to get excited when thinking about traveling, instead of stressed.
  • Practice Relaxation Techniques: “Incorporate relaxation techniques such as deep breathing and meditation to calm and center yourself. [Yoga of Immortals] Breathwork and Advance Cognitive sessions can really help,” says Dr. Shivanand. As the founder of the Yoga of Immortals practice, he uses its principles in his everyday life and has seen how it can positively impact the lives of others from a mental health standpoint. However, any type of yoga, meditation, and other similar practices you're familiar with should help.

  • Create a Checklist: “Create a checklist of essential items to pack and tasks to complete before your trip to stay organized and minimize last-minute stressors,” shared Dr. Shivanand. “Organizing your belongings and documents can also help you feel more in control during your travels.” The simple task of crossing off packing items from a list can feel cathartic and ensure you don’t forget anything essential during your travels.
  • Stay Connected: “Maintain communication with friends or family members before, during, and after your trip,” Dr. Shivanand recommends. “Knowing that you have someone to reach out to for support or guidance can provide reassurance and alleviate feelings of isolation.” News flash, the people you care about care about you too! They’ll be happy to hear from you and walk you through any tough feelings, if need be.
  • Stay Grounded: “Practice mindfulness and grounding techniques to stay present and centered during your travels,” shared Dr. Shivanand. Embrace the ‘pinch me’ moments of your trip as they happen, this is why you’re traveling in the first place after all!

  • Seek Professional Support: “If travel-related anxiety significantly impacts your ability to engage in travel experiences, consider seeking support from a mental health professional,” says Dr. Shivanand. Listen; asking for help is okay, and something that you should do if it will have a positive impact on your life.
  • Incorporate Meditative & Wellness Daily: In doing so, Dr Shivanand says, "One can effectively manage travel-related anxiety and enjoy your travel experiences with greater ease and confidence.” Dr. Shivanand reiterates that “it's okay to seek support and take proactive steps to prioritize your mental well-being during your travels.”

I am the opposite of a casual Reputation fan. Four of my five most-listened-to songs on Spotify are from the 2017 album, I wore a Rep-inspired outfit to my Eras Tour show, and I am constantly analyzing (and talking about) its symbolism. We don't have an official Reputation (Taylor's Version) release date yet, but all signs were originally pointing to an announcement on February 16, 2024. When the music video for "Karma" from Midnights came out, featuring a shot of Taylor holding a cappuccino, Swifties immediately picked up on the symbolism. The blue nail (which represents 1989 (Taylor's Version)) lines up with the 8 on the clock, and the black nail lines up with the 2 on the clock. Taylor ended up announcing 1989 TV on August 9 — and then announced The Tortured Poets Department(also known as TS11) onstage at the 2024 Grammys in February!

TaylorNation just teased the Reputation (Taylor's Version) release date by hopping on the latest internet trend, which uses the "You wouldn't last an hour in the asylum where they raised me" lyric from "Who's Afraid Of Little Old Me?" Their Instagram carousel features images that have sent Swifties spiraling in the past, but there are two pics I'm paying special attention to: the "five holes in the fence" image from the Lover era, and a "Bejeweled" music video still of Taylor Swift pressing 3 in an elevator. May 3 (5/3) comes two weeks after the TTPD release, and since Taylor has been emphasizing her lead single "Fortnight" with the "For a Fortnight" challenge, it looks like it could line up perfectly.

There are plenty of other potential summer release dates too! Swifties know Taylor Swift lives and breathes the number 13, and that she's been making her recent rerecording announcements at her Eras Tour shows.

Well, this summer, Taylor is heading to Milan for a show on Saturday, July 13. X user @roranotaurora points out that the symbol for Milan is a snake (it's also a symbol for Rep!) AND that on July 13, 1977, there was a blackout across New York City. When Taylor announced the original Reputation in 2017, the "Don't Blame Me" singer blacked out all her social media. If she announced the album in July, there's a good chance we'd get it just in time for autumn, chilly weather, and Daylight Savings Time, all three of which go perfectly with the Reputation aesthetic.

There's another 13 we need to pay attention to as well: December 13, which is also Taylor Swift's birthday. The popstar had the date front and center in her Tortured Poets Department pop-up installation. Since the date falls on a Friday, it's the perfect day to drop some new music...

Recently, Taylor showed up to the 81st Golden Globe Awards in an all green ensemble, which is already so Reputation-coded to begin with. However, fans noticed one teeeeeeeny tiny detail about her look that really leans into all the theories that Rep (TV) is next. If you zoom in on her rings, one of them is a snake that's wrapped around her finger. 🐍

And after Taylor Swift released a video teasing her new album, Swifties are analyzing all the snakeskin patterns (on the curtains, the floor, and the green couch), as well as the dark visuals. While the video moves from the dark room to a bright one for TTPD, I'm convinced we'll be returning — or continuing down the hallway where you can see a dark picture frame waiting for us...

All the surprise songs at her Tokyo Eras Tour shows referenced falling apart, and a huge part of the Reputation era was related to a quote from Taylor that says "when she fell, she fell apart." Before playing "The Outside" as her piano surprise song on February 9, she made a joke that the song was 175 years old — which has Swifties thinking August 2 (175 days from February 9) could be the album's release date. Considering "The Outside" is off her first album, it's also possible we're getting Taylor Swift (Taylor's Version) in August!

A recent Disney+ ad that paired the Eras Tour film and Disney Pixar's Cars went viral on Twitter because its tagline is "Getaway Car," one of the most beloved songs on Reputation (Taylor's Version)! No matter when the album drops, having Taylor Swift's final two re-recordings be her name and her reputation is literally so iconic and I can't wait to listen.

Taylor Swift showed up to the 2024 Grammys in a sculptural white gown from Schiaparelli Couture. I love how Taylor has hopped on the corset trend. This is my favorite neckline in recent years! Even though the dress is white instead of black or green — and ended up going along with the Tortured Poets Department (or TS 11) announcement — I think it's still a Reputation (Taylor's Version) Easter egg. White is, of course, the opposite of black, so I think it's a more unexpected reference to the album, with black accessories like gloves, shoes, and jewelry being a direct nod. Plus, the watch necklace pays homage to Midnights! At the 2022 VMAs, Taylor wore another Reputation-coded outfit before she announced Midnights, so I think it's definitely a pattern.

Yes, we're getting a Reputation (Taylor's Version)! Taylor Swift has been very vocal about the fact she's rerecording her first five albums. However, she's been less direct about the order or the release schedule, which is honestly more fun! The official Taylor Nation account added fuel to the fire when they posted a photo of Taylor rehearsing for The Eras Tour — because, like @nashs_mom on TikTok says, the pose doesn't match up with any of the songs. While all the photos they've previously posted match up with numbers like "Enchanted" or "Illicit Affairs," the new pose seems to match up with "I Did Something Bad" (which is both the last Reputation surprise song left AND the perfect song to announce the rerecording).

"Hear me out," another TikTok user commented. "['I Did Something Bad'] was not part of the set list in 2023 but what if the first night of the tour in 2024 she performs [it] and announces REP TV."

"I literally ratatatataed as soon as I saw it," another user says, referencing the iconic production at the beginning of the song. We have less than a month before the Eras Tour starts up again, so I'm excited to see when we'll finally get a Reputation (Taylor's Version) announcement!

What caused Taylor Swift to make Reputation?

The primary catalyst for Taylor Swift's Reputation era was a phone call with Kanye West and Kim Kardashian. After Taylor said Kanye did not have her permission to say he "made that b-tch famous" in "Famous," a video leak from Kim seemed to show Taylor did actually give her permission (it was later revealed the video was edited, and Taylor gave her permission to be mentioned, NOT to be called a b-tch).

"#TaylorSwiftIsOverParty" began trending on Twitter, and everyone from the media to the general public began calling her a snake. So she disappeared from the public eye for over a year, and Reputation was born. The era was moody — and full of snake imagery. Taylor says in her TIME interview that the album came from "a goth-punk moment of female rage at being gaslit by an entire social structure," and told Rolling Stone in 2019 that Reputation was a "metaphor" and her "playing a character."

Taylor began writing Reputation in 2016, when she was 27. However, the stories she's telling go back farther than that since "Dancing With Our Hands Tied" talks about a relationship from when she was 25.

Is Reputation a love album?

While Reputation is sassy, moody, and satirical, I stand by the idea that it's actually a love album at its core. While the general public talked most about "Ready for It?" and "Look What You Made Me Do," songs like "Delicate," "Call It What You Want," and "New Year's Day" are all about healing after the media turned against her. The message of the album is all about how she wants to spend the the ins and outs of life with people she loves, because they make the boring days beautiful, which is also the sentiment running throughout "Lover."

"I want your midnights, but I'll be cleaning up bottles with you on New Year's Day" and "We can leave the Christmas lights up 'til January" are the same!!

While we don't have the tracklist for Reputation (Taylor's Version) yet, she did mention in her TIME interview that the vault tracks will be "fire."

"I’m collecting horcruxes,” she says of the rerecordings. “I’m collecting infinity stones. Gandalf’s voice is in my head every time I put out a new one. For me, it is a movie now.”

I'm going to be real honest, this is the line that sent me into a tailspin because the idea that Taylor loves stories like Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and the MCU as much as I do is too much!! But it makes sense because after all, she IS a storyteller.
