Why You Should Post a Red Heart to Social Media Today

In honor of Suicide Prevention Month in September, Dr. Brandt Skincare is dedicated to spreading the support while raising awareness — and wants you to help out. The best part is you only need a photo of a red heart.

“A #sayiloveyou to a friend in need can make all the difference,” the brand wrote on Instagram. For every photo of a red heart posted with Dr. Brandt tagged, they will donate $1 to American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and the Trevor Project, starting today, Sept. 14, and lasting through the rest of September.

The skincare brand is also launching the #SAYILOVEYOU Kit ($38), from which a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Dr. Brandt Foundation. The issue is a personal one for the company, as the foundation was formed after Dr. Frederic Brandt took his own life in 2015 and aims to raise awareness about suicide and depression.

The kit includes smaller sizes of the Dr. Brandt Microdermabrasion (typically $79), an exfoliator, Pores No More Pore Refiner Primer ($45), Pores No More Luminizer Primer ($38), a tote bag bearing a #SayILoveYou heart, and a red heart temporary tattoo. Once you get your kit, make sure to slap on that tatt and post to Instagram to donate that extra dollar!

If you or a loved one needs help, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255 or chat with a specialist on the Lifeline website. You are not alone.

Dancing with the Stars has all the ingredients needed for a captivating show. With lots of celebrities, tough competition, and dancing skills being put to the test, it's no surprise the show has remained a part of pop culture for 32 seasons. As the latest season continues, it's clear that Dancing with the Stars hasn't lost what's made it so popular to begin with.

With shocking eliminations, huge celebs — here's looking at you Taylor Swift — and jaw-dropping dances, here's everything you need to know about what happened so far in Dancing with the Stars season 32 (and what's to come!)

Was there a Taylor Swift night on Dancing with the Stars?

Photo by Kevin Winter/Getty Images for TAS Rights Management

Yes! On November 6, Dancing With The Stars announced they'd be having a Taylor Swift-themed night November 21. "Dancing With The Stars can’t stop, won’t stop moving," Taylor Nation said in their official Instagram post. "And this time it’s through the eras."

"An Enchanted waltz would be magical…" one Reddit user posted.

"I would love to see an emotional contemporary number for tolerate it .." another said.

Who's Took Their Stardom To The Dance Floor This Season?

Meet the Season 32 Cast | Dancing With The Stars

The dancing is great and all but, arguably, the best part of Dancing with the Stars is the celebrity contestants and their partners.

Here's the rundown on who's been dancing with who this season:

  • Jamie Lynn Spears with Alan Bersten
  • Alyson Hannigan with Sasha Farber
  • Mauricio Umansky with Emma Slater
  • Harry Jowsey with Rylee Arnold
  • Tyson Beckford with Jenna Johnson
  • Xochitl Gomez with Val Chmerkovskiy
  • Charity Lawson with Artem Chigvintsev
  • Mira Sorvino with Gleb Savchenko
  • Lele Pons with Brandon Armstrong
  • Adrian Peterson with Britt Stewart
  • Barry Williams with Peta Murgatroyd
  • Jason Mraz with Daniella Karagach
  • Matt Walsh with Koko Iwasaki
  • Ariana Madix with Pasha Pashkov

Which Duos Have Packed Their Bags & Gone Home?

Mauricio Umansky and Matt Walsh and their respective partners found themselves in the bottom two the first week. Once the votes were counted, it was revealed that Walsh and Iwasaki would not be dancing another day.

The second episode of the show, of course, saw another elimination. Jamie Lynn Spears and Alan Bersten had to pack their bags and say goodbye to the dance floor after their Latin routine failed to impress the judges. Spears was one of the most anticipated celebs to join the show this season, so it was a shock to see her get eliminated so quickly.

Xochitl Gomez’s Cha Cha – Dancing with the Stars

Just like eliminations are inevitable when it comes to Dancing with the Stars, so are dances and duos that get everyone talking. So far this season, those include Marvel Star Xochitl Gomez and Val Chmerkovskiy's dance to Camila Cabello's "Don't Go Yet" and singer Jason Mraz and Daniella Karagach's rumba. Both of these dances earned an impressive 24/30 score!

Everyone's also been buzzing about Ariana Madix and Pasha Pashkov's insanely good "Slave 4 U" number! The duo pulled out all the stops and did the iconic song complete justice, earning them a 37/40 score.

What's To Come?

Premiere Night Opening Number | Dancing with the Stars

The dancing drama has only just begun! Tonight, there will be a new episode that is sure to boast a number of exceptional dances with the theme being "Motown Night".

DWTS pro, Peta Murgatroyd, also dropped a bomb about a very timely themed night that many viewers are beyond thrilled about. Considering how many headlines our favorite blonde superstar has been making, it's no surprise that the dancers will be "shaking it off" this season during a Taylor Swift-themed week.

The Drama Surround This Season - Explained

Image via ABC

Shortly after Ariana ended things with her former boyfriend of a decade, Tom Sandoval, over his months-long affair with VPR costar and Ariana’s BFF Raquel Leviss, rumors of her alleged casting in Season 32 dancing competition show caught fire (and spread like crazy). Months of speculation were confirmed thanks to Good Morning America, and saying we were stoked would be an understatement.

Despite all the drama in her personal life, she's been killing it on the show. I think Derek said it best: "Goodbye to the drama, and hello to the dance floor!"

Who were the finalists of Season 32?

Finale Opening Number | Dancing with the Stars

This season's finalists were Ariana Madix, Charity Lawson, Xochitl Gomez, Alyson Hannigan, and Jason Mraz. They performed an amazing opening performance with other celebs, which set the stage for the rest of the finale. Each dancing duo was full of smiles and style as they effortlessly waltzed around the main stage. Let's just say viewers were able to get a healthy dose of glitz and glamour before the season's winners were announced.

DWTS: Xochitl Gomez & Val Chmerkovskiy React to Season 32 WIN and Cast's Support (Exclusive)

It was a really tough call, but Xochitl Gomez and her dancing partner Val Chmerkovskiy took home the Len Goodman Mirrorball trophy! They proved they were fan favorites earlier in the season, but their reattempt of the foxtrot is what won over judges. They danced to Katy Perry's "Unconditionally" and US Weekly reports that Judge Bruno Tonioli told Xochitl, "Your musicality is like part of the orchestra."

The latter was beaming as this is the first time she's won DWTS compared to it being Chmerkovskiy's third win. Nevertheless, he shared her excitement and we're glad to see these deserving dance partners come out on top.

It's the first day of December, and we're celebrating it by sharing which Sephora birthday gift you can get this month. That's right — I'm talking about all the freebies you can find! Well, not all of them — just enough to help you find new makeup, skincare, or haircare products to add to your vanity. After looking at the options Sephora has to offer this month, we're sure you'll have a hard time choosing from all the great options.

Let's jump into the 8 glamorous Sephora birthday gifts you can get in December!

How do I redeem my free birthday gift?

In order to redeem your birthday gift, you have to become a beauty insider. Signing up is completely free.

Are birthday gifts only available online?

Some of them are, but some can be picked up in-stores. You'll want to look online to see if the birthday gift you want has the "Available online only" or "Available in Store only" label.

Can I redeem more than one gift?

Wouldn't it be nice if we could have all the things? Unfortunately, you can only choose one birthday gift set.

Am I able to redeem a VIB or Rogue birthday gift if I haven't reached those tiers?

If you recently became a beauty insider, you'll be in the 'insider' tier. Here's the requirements to reach the next tiers:

  • VIB: Spend $350 in one year
  • Rogue: Spend $1000 in one year

You'll have to continue spending those amounts to maintain your VIB or Rogue status. At that point, you'll be able to redeem a Rogue VIB birthday gift.

Other than that, you have free reign to choose from 7 other great options! Here's everything you can choose during your birthday month!

Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Skincare Birthday Gift Set (Clean Beauty)

What's included:

  • Watermelon Glow PHA + BHA Pore-Tight Toner
  • Niacinamide Dew Drops

I chose this birthday gift during September and fell in love with the niacinamide dew drops! I typically use this after cleansing and toning my face because it serves as a way to minimize my pores.

Note: It has a faint watermelon fragrance.

Kérastase Curly Hair Birthday Gift Set

What's included:

  • Curl Manifesto Sulfate-free Shampoo for Curly Hair mini
  • Curl Manifesto Light-Weight Conditioner for Curly Hair mini

Ilia Makeup Birthday Gift Set (Clean Beauty)

What's included:

  • Limitless Lash Mascara in shade After Midnight (Black)
  • Multi-Sitck in shade At Last (Mauve Rose)

You can never have too many tubes of mascara, but you may choose to stick with Ilia's limitless lash mascara after you redeem this birthday gift. It works to expertly strengthen, lift and elongate lashes without leaving behind clumps.

As far for the buildable multi-stick? Trust me when I say mauve rose looks good on everyone.

Ouai "The Ouai of Life" Birthday Gift Set

What's included:

  • Detox Shampoo mini
  • Leave-in Travel Conditioner mini
  • St. Bart's Body Cleanser mini
  • Melrose Place eau de parfum mini
Ouai is pulling out all the bells and whistles with this birthday gift set! Not only do you get a couple of haircare goodies, you also get a sample of body cleanser and eau de parfum. I can't tell you which gift to buy, but this gift set sounds like it's worth redeeming.

Dior Fragrance Birthday Gift Set

What's included:

  • Miss Dior eau de parfum mini
  • Sauvage eau de parfum mini
This birthday gift set includes two of Dior's beloved fragrances that can easily be yours during your birthday month! If someone offered me a chance to score a new fragrance sample I didn't have to pay for, I'd run to accept it.

Sephora Mystery Birthday Gift Set

What's included:

  • Three samples from skincare, haircare, and makeup brands
It's easy to get overwhelmed by how many birthday gifts Sephora offers, but this set is going to help you relax. It's full of mystery items that range from skincare to makeup, so you'll get an assortment of freebies.

Sephora Birthday Gift 250 Bonus Points

Then again, you can decide to have an extra 250 bonus points added to your account. I reached the VIB rogue tier by choosing this option one year and my total accumulated points allowed me to save $10 off my next purchase. It's a win even if it's not a gift set.

ROGUE VIB

Patrick Ta Makeup Lover's Birthday Gift Set

What's included:

  • Major Brow Lamination Gel mini
  • Major Glow Lip Shine mini

If you've reached the VIB or Rogue tiers — congratulations! You'll get to take home Patrick Ta's makeup lover's birthday gift set! If the pretty packaging doesn't catch your eye, then the high shine lipgloss and smoothing brow gel will!

Which birthday gift will you be taking home this month?

For Emily Henry, her novels are time capsules. Writing a new book means that she’s infusing the characters with whatever lessons she’s learning at the moment, using the ins and outs of their arcs to learn more about herself. Which also means that when she goes back to read an older book, she’s immediately transported to where she was at that time.

“And there are things about each of the characters that I'm very attached to [where] I recognize myself,” she says. “All of them are being pulled from something that I feel very personally engaged with.”

There’s a general advice that one should avoid meeting their heroes, but in my case, it turned out to be a fantastic experience. Henry is as calm and collected as the blue paint on her walls. She offers both fun anecdotes and in-depth analyses of the human condition with ease, which seems to prove that as chill as she is on the surface, her mind is a wide-open playground for her imagination.

www.youtube.com

New novel from author Emily Henry | Your Morning

“Whenever I'm writing one of these books, it's like the characters are never me, but I'm always taking some facet of myself that I want to spend some time thinking about and working on,” she says. “It's such a work of self-reflection and investigation.”

In Henry’s newest novel Happy Place— released in hardcover April 25th, 2023 and *finally* hitting shelves as a paperback March 7th, 2024 — her heroine is a perpetual people pleaser (say that five times fast) and has a hard time figuring out what she really wants for her life. “That tendency to try to always keep the peace and to get along with everyone...is this coping mechanism of hers,” she says. “But [now] it's actually creating all this friction and all these tensions.”

I’ve written fiction since elementary school, and I know firsthand how exciting it is when your characters become so fully formed that it’s like they’re making their own decisions. This point in the writing process is also very exciting for Henry.

“Once the characters are fleshed out enough that their decisions are very easy for me to predict and understand, [it’s way more fun],” Henry says. In Happy Place, that moment came when she realized her leads Harriet and Wyn (who are pretending they’re still engaged while on a group vacation with mutual friends) needed to talk about why their relationship came to an end.

This approach to the characters also helped her during the big finale and the final act grand gesture, which (spoiler alert!) is a play on the familiar rom-com airport scene. But instead of having one character pursue the other through the airport, running through security at breakneck speed and declaring love in front of 100 strangers, she flipped the trope on its head.

After talking about the end of their relationship and spending the final night of their vacation together, Harriet leaves a sleeping Wyn without saying goodbye. She’s convinced that it’s what is best for him, but by the time she gets on the plane, heading back to a job she hates without the love of her life, she realizes that whatever dream life she built up for herself doesn’t matter if he’s not there. When she runs back outside, Wyn is already there, and they meet in the middle. Can someone pass me a tissue?

By this point in the novel, the reader is well acquainted with the airport and the wacky pilot that works there. The emotions that come with an airport experience — joy when you’re reunited with friends and sadness when you’re saying goodbye — make the conversation even more impactful.

“That was a tricky scene for me to nail down because so much of Harriet's journey is really internal,” she says. “And that's just tricky in general because when something is more external, [you have to think about] how the grand gesture should play out.”

Figuring out the specific ways that the characters failed each other, and how they got to the heart of each other’s insecurities, needs to have an equally emotional redemption. Henry went back and forth trying to pinpoint exactly what her grand gesture would look like, and who it would come from. But that exploration allowed her to discover something that is an excellent reminder for life in general: the end of their relationship was the buildup of wrongs on both their ends.

“This was not one person failing a relationship. It was two people who things broke down between and who both made their own mistakes,” Henry says. “I didn't really see a way that I could bring them back together and their big moment without both of them taking a pretty big risk.”

Harriet needed to admit what she truly wanted, and Wyn needed to admit how afraid he was of not being enough for her in the future. These ideas of happiness, love, fear, humor — Henry threads these real-world experiences throughout all of her novels. Beach Read deals with betrayal and grief as much as it does love, People We Meet On Vacation looks at the idea of home, and Book Lovers explores identity and independence. And they all feature two people who are very, very messy.

“When you write two characters falling in love, you are writing two people at their absolute most vulnerable. Because when you fall in love, you are kind of innately embarrassing,” she says. “You've met someone who you're so drawn to that you want to know everything about them [and] I feel like you kind of become very aware of your own trauma based on how you're reacting to the process of falling in love.

“I find writing the process of falling in love to be a really easy inroad to exploring a person's mental interiority and their emotional landscape,” she says. “Nothing really encapsulates what it is to be a human quite like the experience of falling in love.”

The complexity found within these books isn’t the simplified, superficial stories people think they are. There is so much enthusiasm and joy for the sake of joy — even if the characters are still dealing with heartbreak in all its forms.

“In general, romances have conflict like any other book. The difference really is that guaranteed happily ever after,” Henry says. “Yes, there are these horrible things happening and that's probably not going to stop any time soon. But even so, life is beautiful and worth living and that's how it was. So that's how I started this particular part of my writing journey, wrestling with that exact thing.”

Henry loves the fact that by ending a story with a happily ever after, she’s able to emphasize that that is the point of the whole journey. The future is uncertain but for now, the characters are choosing to go through the day-to-day of life together.

“The point of the story was the moment where love does conquer all and where these two people are blissfully happy,” she says. “And I really do believe as much as there is a point to anything, that's the point for me. The point is being with the people you love on the planet Earth...I think that's a worldview that is worth holding on to.”

I might have had to blink away a few tears at that, thinking about the hope and joy that her books have given me, and how Happy Place is already inspiring other readers, too. Naturally, I had to ask her about her own happy place.

“Usually once every year, every couple of years, [I] fly to San Francisco and I go to Muir Woods [and Muir Beach], and then drive up through wine country and go wine tasting and be out in beautiful vineyards,” she says. “And then I go up to visit my grandparents who live in Oregon. And there’s mountains, and usually you can drive up high enough that there's snow. And I love that I can just do all of that with one flight.”

Being surrounded by nature also makes Henry feel more creative. She offers a hint at her new book, which features a relationship that she describes as “something kind of close” to a grumpy/sunshine pairing, similar to her own relationship.

“My husband is truly, like the nicest person in the entire world. And I feel that I'm a very kind person, but I'm not like, sweet,” she jokes. “I'm like a little bit sassy and brash and mischievous.”

She’s drawn parallels in the past between book number five and “Karma” by Taylor Swift: “It's basically like something really bad happens to you but because of that, every great thing in your life is just kind of clicking into place.”

And as one final Taylor Swift lyrical Easter egg, she adds: “Hopefully it feels like ‘the wind in your hair on a weekend.’”

B+C: What is on your writing playlist? If you have any music that you like to listen to?

EH: I do not listen to music when I write because I'm so easily distracted. If there are lyrics, there's no way. I used to kind of put on classical music but even if I know the song, I'm waiting for certain parts I like. Sound is hard when I'm writing, unfortunately.

B+C: How do you come up with character names and locations?

EH: You have to remember that all of your characters have different parents unless they're siblings. So the way that they would have been named would have had so much to do with how old their parents are, where their parents would have lived, what kind of people they are...And then also, it really helps that they all have to be different. And so like meeting the variety of multiple syllables.

I'm definitely on nameberry.com a lot like a lot of writers, just looking at very specific lists that will be like artistic girls’ names from the ‘90s or whatever, just like looking for ideas.

[I’m also] trying to not name them people after people that I actually know and talk to often. But eventually I'm going to run out of other names, and friends and family are going to start showing up. I'm always so paranoid about that — or that I'll forget someone’s partner’s name and then I'll be writing a love story where the love interest looks like a friend's boyfriend and has the same name as him. Oh, I'm always so paranoid about that kind of thing, but so far so good.

B+C: Do you write during any particular time of day?

EH: Usually I write mornings through afternoon, usually from like ten to like three. I write most days.

B+C: What has surprised you most about writing books?

EH: That it doesn't get easier is probably true. I'm like, “I would have really thought it would get easier.” And instead, it’s sort of like, “Have I already done this before? Like, this is my first time writing a book, right?”

B+C: And do you have any favorite tropes? Whether you’re writing them or reading them.

EH: I love reading “marriage of convenience” in historical romance so much. That's one of my very favorites. And I do love enemies to lovers. I think I can be kind of picky about it, but when it's good, it's very, very good.

The Barbie movie premiered on July 21, 2023 and as self-proclaimed movie fanatics and lovers of all things pink, we absolutely loved it. As predicted, Barbie was the movie of the summer, if not the movie of the year. We've been counting down the days until we're able to see it on streaming but now it looks like we'll be able to see it in theaters again. Here's everything we know!

Who's on Barbie: The Album?

Image via Atlantic Recording Corporation/Warner Bros.

Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice's "Barbie World" featuring Aqua (the OG singer) is one of the songs on Barbie the Album that we can't get enough of. Two queens coming together to support the new movie's iconic soundtrack is the *best* way we could've imagined spending the summer.

Pop icon Dua Lipa is also bringing her talents to the film's soundtrack in addition to acting in the movie. In a teaser video she posted, we got a brief cameo of Dua stepping out of her pink heels, Barbie-style, as well as a close-up shot of her blowing a kiss to the camera, already starting the buzz. We love the *totally* disco vibe from her track. Although she revealed on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon that her hit song "Dance The Night Away" almost didn't make it on the soundtrack. At least, not the version we know.

"It's all about Barbie's [best] day ever, and then she starts having an existential crisis and she starts thinking about death," Dua Lipa tells Jimmy. "It's like 'Okay, how do we create a song that encapsulates a really fun disco party but at the same time has these underlying, shaky feelings?'"

Dua Lipa and her collaborator Mark Ronson started leaning into those shaky feelings and that turmoil, but realized it didn't fit the scene the way they intended. They ended up writing "Dance The Night Away" like a score, basing some of the lyrics off the movements of the actors and creating a song that meshed well with the story the cast was already telling. "It was unlike anything I'd done before!" Dua says.

The rest of the lineup for Barbie The Album(available to buy on vinyl, CD, and even cassette tape)was announced on May 25 and includes names like Lizzo, Nicki Minaj, Ice Spice, and *even* Ryan Gosling! Here's the artists involved:

  • Ava Max
  • Charli XCX
  • Dominic Fike
  • Dua Lipa
  • FIFTY FIFTY
  • GAYLE
  • HAIM
  • Ice Spice
  • Kali
  • KAROL G
  • Khalid
  • Lizzo
  • Nicki Minaj
  • Pink Pantheress
  • Ryan Gosling
  • Tame Impala
  • The Kid LAROI
  • Billie Eilish

What awards is Barbie up for?

Image via Dimitrios Kambouris / Staff

Barbie is up for a few Grammys and Oscars (which you can read about below), and on November 27, Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig attended the Gotham Awards in New York City. Margot wore another Barbie-inspired outfit with a black ensemble inspired by 1964's Black Magic Barbie, and my first question is where *I* can get a cape like this!

At the awards show, Greta won an Icon & Creator Tribute, while Ryan Gosling was nominated for Supporting Performance.

What songs from Barbie got a 2024 Grammy nomination?

(L) SCOTT EVANS as Ken, (L-center) RYAN GOSLING as Ken, (center bg) KINGSLEY BEN-ADIR as Ken, (r-center) SIMU LIU as Ken, and (R) NCUTI GATWA as Ken in Warner Bros. Pictures’ “BARBIE,” a Warner Bros. Pictures release. Image via Warner Bros Pictures.

Barbie received an incredible number of Grammy nominations this year. "Dance the Night" by Dua Lipa and "What Was I Made For?" were both nominated for Song of the Year, and "What Was I Made For?" was also nominated for Record of the Year. Ryan Gosling's "I'm Just Ken" is nominated for Best Song Written for Visual Media, and "Barbie World" by Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice Featuring Aqua is nominated for Best Rap Song. "Barbie" has also been nominated for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media (Includes Film and Televison)!

Is Barbie eligible for Oscars?

According to EW, it looks like Barbie could be nominated for nine Academy Awards this season. Given the reception by critics and fans alike, we're feeling confident that the movie will take home at least one Oscar (if not more), but there are so many amazing films this year we don't know what the awards show will look like! Here's every category Barbie could be nominated in:

  • Best Picture
  • Best Director for Greta Gerwig
  • Best Lead Actress for Margot Robbie
  • Best Supporting Actor for Ryan Gosling
  • Best Original Screenplay
  • Best Original Song for Billie Eilish and Finneas' "What Was I Made For?"
  • Best Production Design
  • Best Costume Design
  • Best Makeup and Hairstyling

Who wrote the song What Was I Made For?

Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas O'Connell wrote "What Was I Made For?" for the Barbie soundtrack. Director Greta Gerwig told the duo, viaThe LA Times, that she wanted "Barbie’s heart song — the song that is deep inside her core that she doesn’t even completely know is there but that she starts to hear more clearly throughout the film.”

The song became my personal favorite on Barbie the Album, and spawned a viral TikTok trend celebrating the beautiful, messy parts of womanhood. “It was so moving, dude. It was so, so touching,” Billie tells Variety about the trend. “I feel like I helped bring people together, and it felt so special. I wasn’t expecting to have women around the world feel connected.”

Not only did we get to see the entirety of the film (including that one detail in the Barbie ending we totally missed the first time) but there was also brand new post-credit footage that Greta Gerwig handpicked herself!

“We made Barbie for the big screen, so it’s a thrill to be able to bring it to IMAX, the biggest screen of all,” Gerwig says in a statement. “As a special thanks to Barbie fans, we’re excited to share a little bit more of our cast and crew’s incredible work by adding special new footage we hope audiences will enjoy.”

The film premiered in theaters on July 21, 2023 (we were the ones dressed in all pink). We're finally going to be able to stream Barbie from the comfort of our own home on September 5, 2023. You can pre-order it on Amazon for $25 right now, but (according to People) it also might hit Max as early as late September.

First Look Images From The Film

Barbie costume designer Jacqueline Durran talked to British Vogue about her work on the film, as well as the fact they only had 11 weeks (!!) to make all of the costumes.

“Barbie is a very useful way to look at different ideas of femininity: what that means, who owns it, and who it’s aimed at,” Durran says in the interview. Some of Margot Robbie's looks are sassy (like her cowgirl outfit) and some are sweet (like her gingham dress), but all of them play a larger role in the film.

"One aspect of the film is self-discovery," Durran continues. "We were able to choose elements of Barbie fashion that were appropriate for those scenes that also gave a subtle nod to her internal journey.”

The first thing we're thinking after watching this trailer is how much the actors really do look like Barbie dolls! The costuming might just become one of our favorite things about the film (not to mention the iconic opening sequence à la 2001: A Space Odyssey).

What Is The Barbie Movie About?

Teaser Poster courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures

A lot of previous Barbie movies place the iconic doll in fairy tales or navigating high school, but the Greta Gerwig film (which premiered July 21, 2023) takes a whole new approach. The plot focuses on Margot Robbie's Barbie, who gets expelled from Barbieland and goes off to explore the real world.

Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt composed the score for the Barbie movie.

What's The Big Deal About This Barbie Movie?

MARGOT ROBBIE as Barbie in Warner Bros. Pictures’ “BARBIE,” a Warner Bros. Pictures release.

In a 2021 interview with British Vogue, Robbie says that while playing Barbie comes with both baggage and nostalgia, "people generally hear ‘Barbie’ and think, ‘I know what that movie is going to be,’ and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they’re like, ‘Oh, well, maybe I don’t...’”

Finding a way to balance adulthood with finding comfort in the things from our childhood (a champagne brunch at the American Girl store anyone?), there's something to be said for getting in touch with your inner child.

In a July interview with Ebony, Issa Rae (who plays President Barbie in the film) talks about the impact that the dolls had on her childhood.

“It was another step on the ladder of my journey with my racial identity, just because I saw how passionate my parents were about me playing with Black Barbies, though I didn’t know it was that serious,” she says. “I was just there trying to make scenes with my Barbies. And I think in some ways, that was my first foray into storytelling and directing.”
