How to Shop the Farmers’ Market… in the Winter

There are plenty of cold-weather crops at the farmers’ market to inspire fall and winter cooking if you’re willing to brave the chill. Though we often associate farmers’ markets with warm weather temps, you’ll have so much fun stocking up on hearty veggies for a cozy evening in the kitchen. Markets also tend to be much less crowded in the winter, so you can browse in peace and get some more quality face time with farmers, who can give you tips on how to select the best fruits and veggies, plus the best way to prepare them. In the meantime, check out this primer on what you might expect to find.

1. Dark Leafy Greens: Though it seems counterintuitive, leafy greens are actually in season during the winter. Sturdy greens like kale, collards, and chard are in abundance. Sauté them in olive oil with garlic for a simple side, throw them into your morning smoothie, toss them into soups and stews, or bake them up in casseroles. Leafy green dinner options are endless.

2. Cruciferous Veggies:Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, and cabbage are all part of this cool-weather group. High in vitamins, minerals, and fiber, these vegetables may help boost your immune system during the coming months. Look for veggies that are firm and have tight buds. Chop them up in salads, roast them, sauté, or even steam them.

3. Persimmons: These vibrant orange tree fruits are as delicious as they are pretty. Use the ripe flesh of acorn-shaped Hachiya persimmons for baking. Fuyu persimmons are flatter in shape and are great raw. Try them in salads or slice and broil with a little goat cheese as a seasonal appetizer. You can enjoy the fruit for every meal — morning, noon, and night — when it comes to persimmon recipes.

4. Onions: Onions are an underrated workhorse. They’re the backbone of sauces, soups, stews, pastas, and even sauces like caramelized onion gravy. Take advantage of this time of year to use them as a starring flavor. We love them as a filling in a savory tart, or used in the classic French onion soup. Leeks, shallots, and garlic are also close relatives that you’ll see this season.

5. Winter Squash: The inner flesh of winter squashes is super versatile. Peel and cube them to roast for salads, or in tacos, pasta, or chili. You can also use the puree as a base for velvety soups and pies. Look for squash that have smooth, matte skin, are heavy in weight, and have a dry, firm stem still intact, then let the stellar squash recipes commence!

6. Pears: These tree fruits really hit their stride in winter. They come in tons of different varieties and colors, so you’ll never get bored. Try pears in a multitude of recipes, including baked goods, roasted alongside root vegetables or pork tenderloin, or sliced and served on your next cheese plate.

7. Citrus: Among the cheeriest of the cold weather crops are citrus fruits, like oranges, lemons, limes, grapefruits, and kumquats. They’re bright, tangy, super high in vitamin C, and are said to boost immunity during cold and flu season. We love ours as a fresh juice or with a little sparkling wine for a festive mimosa. Look for blemish-free rinds and fruits that feel a little heavy for their size (use the ones around it for comparison).

8. Pomegranates: Vibrant pomegranates are delicious in both sweet and savory dishes. They’re also high in antioxidants, vitamins, and folic acid. Sprinkle the seeds onto salads, roasted root veggies, your morning oatmeal, or creamy custard desserts, or enjoy them raw as a light snack. To choose a juicy pom, look for heavy fruits.

The Poor Things actress (who just won an Oscar for her role!) is teaming up with director Yorgos Lanthimos for a third time on his new movie Kinds of Kindness. The summer movie has a crazy cast list, and the story looks like it could be one of Yorgos’ wackiest movies yet. While both The Favourite and Poor Things served as strange and fantastical looks at different time periods, it seems Kinds of Kindness takes place in modern America. Here's everything we know!

Emma Stone's new movie is called Kinds of Kindness. The film will follow three separate stories: a man who feels like he has no agency and sets out to claim control over his life, a policeman whose missing wife reappears and seems to be a completely different person, and a woman searching for someone with inhuman abilities who's destined for leadership.

In the newest still from Kinds of Kindness, Emma Stone and Joe Alwyn seem to be in the middle of a standoff. They’re actually standing outside the motel we’ve see Emma’s character drive in front of, which makes me think this will be a huge location within the story. While these actors are all-business during filming, I’m genuinely wondering if they’ve talked about The Tortured Poets Department considering they’ve both been a huge part of Taylor Swift’s life. I HAVE to know which TTPD song Emma has on repeat. (For me, it's "The Alchemy.")

Even though the movie is set in modern America, it definitely seems Kinds of Kindness will have Yorgos Lanthimos' signature wacky and unconventional approach to storytelling. It's kind of like Americana meets magical realism, which, alongside Beyoncé's country album, definitely makes me think media in 2024 will feel like going back to our roots. The "Bridgerton" World Tour Is Bringing Regency England To A City Near You

Nicola Coghlan has already wowed us with some glittering looks for the press tour (that’s MY diamond of the season!!) and I would love to see a whole new look every stop. Fingers crossed it’s different shades of seafoam or teal like her costumes in all the new images this season — or even more metallic shades of silver and gold because Penelope Featherington truly shines this season like we've never seen.

Just like The Queen's Ball: A Bridgerton Experience allowed fans to become a part of a regency ball, I would LOVE for this Bridgerton world tour to be another immersive experience. That way, we can all delve even further into the regency of it all. But even more than that, I want to see Bridgerton’s version of each city. In July 2017, a source seemingly confirmed what many fans had been wondering for months: that Tom Holland and Zendaya had been dating. Considering the two other sets of Spider-Man leads (Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst and Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield) both dated, it felt like this was one relationship that was bound to happen.

"They started seeing each other while they were filming Spider-Man," the insider tells People. "They've been super careful to keep it private and out of the public eye but they've gone on vacations with each other and try and spend as much time as possible with one another."

"They're both really ambitious and they challenge each other — but, most importantly, they make each other crack up," says another insider. "They seem to have a really similar sense of humor and love joking around together."

Tom Holland and Zendaya actually took to Twitter (now X) to tackle the rumors. "Wait wait...my favorite is when it says we go on vacations together HA! I haven't been on a vacation in years!" Zendaya says, to which Tomreplies, "Does the press tour count[?]"

In an interview with GQ, Tom Holland opened up about his relationship with Zendaya and how their relationship to fame has impacted everything. "One of the downsides of our fame is that privacy isn’t really in our control anymore, and a moment that you think is between two people that love each other very much is now a moment that is shared with the entire world,” he says of their July 2 kiss. “I’ve always been really adamant to keep my private life private, because I share so much of my life with the world anyway...We sort of felt robbed of our privacy.”

Ahead of Zendaya's spring movie Challengers (in which she plays a tennis pro-turned-coach opposite Mike Faist and Josh O'Connor), she watched the BNP Paribas Open Men's Final at Indian Wells Tennis Garden. Alongside Tom Holland and her assistant Darnell Appling, who she frequently calls her brother, Zendaya got comfy in a cream-colored tennis skirt, tank top, and zip-up hoodie ensemble. Spring really is here!! My favorite part of the afternoon is when Tom Holland and Zendaya sang along with Whitney Houston's "I Wanna Dance With Somebody."

April 9, 2024 — Zendaya Raves About Tom Holland

In her Vogue cover story for May 2024, Zendaya talks a lot about how fame has affected both her life and Tom Holland's. “His [career] changed overnight. One day you’re a kid and you’re at the pub with your friends, and then the next day you’re Spider-Man,” she says. “I definitely watched his life kind of change in front of him. But he handled it really beautifully.”

That star power was evident in 2022, when Tom Holland and Zendaya spent the afternoon at the Louvre in Paris...and almost broke the internet. “You just kind of get used to the fact that, 'Oh, I’m also one of these art pieces you’re going to take a picture of. I just gotta be totally cool with it and just live my life,'" Zendaya continues. (She also says that when the museum let them walk around after-hours, "it was like Night at the Museum.”)

This spring, Zendaya can't wait to see Tom Holland in his London production of Romeo & Juliet: "[I] could not be more proud. I’m going to try to see as many shows as I possibly can.”

April 10, 2024 — Challengers Premieres In London

Tom Holland showed up for the London premiere of Challengers, and got to support Zendaya in the sweetest way. In this video captured at the premiere, you can see Tom and Z share a hug and a kiss on the cheek during the evening. Even the smallest gesture can mean a lot during a busy night, and I love how in sync Tom Holland and Zendaya are!

The latest viral clip about Tom Holland and Zendaya also has to do with Challengers. During another Challengers press tour stop, Zendaya's overjoyed to be presented with a bouquet of gardenias. “These are my favorite flowers!” she exclaims. When asked if Tom Holland buys her flowers, she points at the camera and jokes, “I hope he's watching!”

While not every girlfriend necessarily wants a bouquet, every couple definitely has to figure out each other's love languages so they can get to know each other better — and apparently A-listers are the exact same!
